Chronic Dev Team Releases New Crash Recovery Software, Gives iOS 5 Jailbreak Update

We are now going on two months (five, if you were using developer betas) since Apple released iOS 5, and we still don't have a viable jailbreak. There have been tethered and semi-tethered solutions available, but not an untethered jailbreak tool.

The worst part is that we haven't known how close hackers have been to releasing anything, until tonight. The Chronic Dev Team has finally broken its silence regarding the untethered iOS 5 jailbreak, and has revealed a new plan for finding future iOS exploits...

The App Store’s First Subscription-Based Game Gets Pulled After One Day

It may have only been made available yesterday, but the first subscription-based iOS game service has already been pulled from the App Store with no explanation.

Big Fish Games had its app approved by Apple which, according to initial reports, offered subscription-based gaming for $6.99 per month. The app allowed the streaming of games from Big Fish Games' servers right to an iPad, with Apple taking their usual 30% cut of the revenues.

While Big Fish Games' seemed rather happy with themselves for being the first to offer games with a monthly subscription on iOS, it turns out that Apple isn't so keen, with the app now gone from the App Store...

Google Search for the iPad Gets a Facelift

Google has had a rough time with its iOS software over the past few weeks. The search company released a disappointing Gmail app for the iPhone earlier this month, but immediately pulled it due to problems with push notifications and other glitches.

The app was resurrected in the App Store recently, but many of its problems were not resolved. Today, however, Google has redeemed itself a bit with an update to its search interface, as it brings several welcome changes to the iPad version...

RadioShack Receiving Sprint iPhone 4S Shipments this Weekend

We reported yesterday on the iPhone 4S supply issues that have been plaguing US operators since the device launched last month. The three major iPhone carrier partners are having trouble keeping up with consumer demand.

Most retailers are sold out of the phone in-store and are reporting shipping dates at least two weeks out. For those of you still trying to get your hands on this year's hottest handset, you may want to try your local RadioShack this weekend...

Apple Seeds iOS 4.4.3 Update for Apple TV

Heads up Apple TV owners: Apple has just seeded iOS 4.4.3. The update appears to be another maintenance release, as we haven't spotted any major new features or differences in the software.

For those of you keeping track, this is the fourth update the company has released for its Apple TV platform within the last month. Each release has brought about specific bug fixes. So, what does the new iOS 4.4.3 bring?

TinyUmbrella Updated With Support For iOS 5.0.1

TinyUmbrella, the tool that allows you to save your SHSH blobs to let you downgrade your iDevice firmware to an older version, has been updated to bring support for iOS 5.0.1.

As we had previously reported, there is currently no way to downgrade an iPhone 4S due to the way Apple now signs your firmware during the restore process (more info about that here)...

iTunes Match Launch Imminent?

Apple missed its scheduled release of iTunes Match last month, but it seems that the company is now preparing for a public launch, as they sent emails to developers earlier today to warn them about a reset of all libraries.

Apple has sent similar emails in the last few weeks, but this one has been worded slightly differently, making us believe that the company is preparing for the launch of iTunes Match...

iOS 5.0.1 Not Helping Improve Battery Life

When Apple dropped iOS 5.0.1 yesterday, the hope amongst many was that it may help to fix the battery issue that was introduced with iOS 5.0.

It is becoming apparent that iOS 5.0.1 may not have actually fixed the battery bug we told you about before, with our own location-based fix still appearing to be the best way of saving precious battery life...

Sn0wBreeze Gets Updated With iOS 5.0.1 Support

Yesterday afternoon, after a week of testing, Apple finally seeded iOS 5.0.1 to the public. The update brings fixes for Siri, the Smart Cover security flaw, and the highly-publicized battery issue.

As you may recall, we've recommended that jailbreakers stay away from updating. It could ruin your chances of a proper iOS 5 jailbreak. But for those of you who couldn't wait, Sn0wBreeze was just updated to support the new software with a tethered jailbreak...

Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1 to the Public

After multiple developer betas, and a series of customer tests, Apple has finally released iOS 5.0.1 to the masses. The update comes just under a month after Apple released iOS 5.0, which included over 200 new features.

Unfortunately, iOS 5 brought with it serious battery problems. And after weeks of complaints, Apple gave an official statement last week that confirmed both the presence of the bugs and the existence of a fix...

Hackers Warn Jailbreakers to Stay Away from iOS 5.0.1

There hasn't been much talk in the jailbreak community regarding progress with either an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak or a 4S jailbreak. But we just received word from infamous iDevice hacker pod2g that, if you're hoping for either one, stay away from the next iOS update.

Pod2g announced last night that the code-signing bug security expert Charlie Miller uncovered a few days ago could make jailbreaking "dramatically easier." And since Apple is aware of the issue and will likely patch it in iOS 5.0.1, he recommends not updating...
