State of the Apple TV jailbreak [updated]

After going weeks without hearing any news regarding the jailbreak status of Apple's latest gadgets, we are finally starting to get some information. Earlier this morning we gave you an update on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, and now we have news on the Apple TV.

Infamous ATV hacker and Chronic Dev Team member Bile published a blog post yesterday explaining the current state of the ATV jailbreak. He notes that while things look good for ATV 2 owners, they don't look so good for the new ATV 3...

pod2g gives us a status update on iOS 5.1 jailbreak

When iOS 5.1 launched alongside Apple's new iPad earlier this month, we saw three different jailbreak methods quickly surface. But it seems like the trail has since gone cold, as we haven't heard any news on the jailbreak front in the past couple of weeks.

That, however, changed this morning, as infamous iOS hacker pod2g finally gave us an update regarding the status of the iOS 5.1 jailbreak. And just as we expected, it looks like it's going to be a while before we see a public release...

iTunes updated to version 10.6.1

iTunes has been updated to version 10.6.1, bringing a bunch of bug fixes:

Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view, and syncing photos to devices. Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes. Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle. Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

As far as I can tell, this iTunes update is jailbreak-safe.

Roughly 80% of iOS users are running on iOS 5 or later

Indie developer David Smith recently published some interesting statistics to his personal blog regarding the adoption rate of iOS versions 5.0 and later. Apple released iOS 5 last October, and has since seeded two incremental updates.

Smith pulled the data from the user base of his popular iOS app, Audiobooks. The app sees about 100 thousand downloads on a weekly basis, so admittedly, its users provide a nice little test market. Now, on to the numbers...

Who needs NFC when you can pay wirelessly right now using Square?

NFC (near field communications) technology has been a rumored "upcoming" iPhone feature for quite some time now. It was supposed to turn up in last year's model (obviously it didn't). And of course it's expected in this year's release.

What's the big deal? Well NFC is the backbone of many mobile payment systems. And everyone is waiting for Apple to enter that space. But why wait for NFC, when you can pay wirelessly with your iPhone right now using Square?

Apple updates Trailers app for Retina iPad, Netflix promises high-def streaming “soon”

Ahead of the original iPad introduction in the April of 2010, the blogosphere had been abuzz over an unnamed Hollywood exec who allegedly saw a prototype in person and claimed the product would be awesome for watching movies. It ended up being quite enjoyable for this purpose, but hardly awesome due its modest 1024-by-768 pixel resolution.

Fast-forward to today and the new iPad, which has a million more pixels than an HDTV, is perfect for watching Hollywood movies in all their 1080 glory. As developers of popular apps update their offerings with Retina support, Apple isn't wasting time neither. Yesterday, the company issued an update to its iTunes Movie Trailers app, basically a pretty-fied frontend to its movie trailers page released last October.

At the same time, Netflix pushed an update to its video streaming client for iOS with support for Retina graphics. Though the program does not enable high-definition video streaming yet, it's in the works and should follow "soon"...

Consumer Reports reviews the new Apple TV

Consumer Reports caused quite a stir yesterday when it reportedly found Apple's new iPad to have an overheating problem. While there's evidence that the tablet runs a tad warm, a lot of folks have called the report sensationalist.

Well the folks at CR are back again today with their review of the new Apple TV. And no, there's no mention of "heatgate" this time around. It actually sounds like they're genuinely impressed with Apple's latest set top box...

New Apple Supplier Responsibility report shows improvement

Sn0wBreeze updated with bug fixes and Apple TV support

A few days ago, iH8sn0w released v2.9.2 of his popular jailbreak tool, Sn0wBreeze. The update added the ability for users to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 (yes, it's still tethered).

Then last night, the hacker seeded another version of the software, bringing it to v2.9.3. This update includes a minor bug fix, but also features new jailbreak support for Apple TV's on iOS 4.4.3 and 4.4.4...

Here’s the first unboxing video of the new iPad

While the rest of the world has to wait until later this week to see Apple's new tablet up close, the folks over at Tinhte.vn appear to have already gotten their hands on one.

As noted by MacRumors, the Vietnamese site posted a video last night of the first unboxing we've seen of the new iPad. The slate's packaging doesn't seem to be much different than that of its predecessor, but you can immediately spot the new Retina display...

Pod2g actively working on iOS 5.1 jailbreak

Those of you who have ignored our warnings and upgraded your devices to iOS 5.1 in the past week will be happy to hear that hackers are already hard at work on jailbreaking the new software.

As expected, the 5.1 update, which Apple released last week alongside its new iPad, effectively breaks the exploits used in both the Corona and Absinthe jailbreak tools...
