NC brings a Twitter widget to Notification Center

Up until a few months ago, if you wanted to have a Twitter widget in Notification Center, you would have had to go the jailbreak way and find a tweak that would allow you to do just that. But since the release of iOS 8, and Apple opening up its mobile operating software for developers to create extensions, we've seen some really neat apps and widgets taking advantage of the new possibilities. NC is one of those.

NC is a new app that lets you add a Twitter widget to the Today tab of Notification Center, and from our usage of the app for the last few days, we can say it works as advertised.

Twitter to start selling ads outside of Twitter, starting with Flipboard and Yahoo Japan

Twitter, the popular micro-blogging platform, said on Tuesday that it will be pursuing ads outside of Twitter for the first time, with plans to sell Promoted Tweets on the popular news reader app Flipboard as well as on the Yahoo Japan website.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company will permit advertisers who are already buying ads on the service to start running Promoted Tweet ad units on other people’s apps and sites that display tweets, with undisclosed revenue sharing between Twitter and partner websites/apps.

Twitter rolls out instant timeline for new users, curating tweets automatically

Twitter is working to cater to new users and make it easier for them to get started with the service with an instant timeline feature. Instead of requiring new users to go out and follow Twitter users on their own, the instant timeline feature brings in content without going through the traditional setup process.

After Twitter scans your contacts in the signup phase, it will automatically present new Twitter users tweets based on who their contacts are and who they follow on Twitter. Essentially, Twitter is guessing which accounts and topics might interest you.

Twindr is like Tinder for Twitter

If Twitter and Tinder could mate, they'd probably give birth to something close to Twindr, a new app that aims to clean up your Twitter feed by allowing you to quickly unfollow accounts. The concept is pretty simple. After authorizing the app to get access to your Twitter account, you will be presented with cards of accounts you follow. Swipe right to keep following. Swipe left to unfollow.

Twitter adds group direct messaging, 30-second video recording

Twitter has rolled out a big update to its iOS app, adding group direct messaging and the ability to shoot video directly within the app.

The new direct messaging tool changes up the feature that's been around since 2008. It's a move to make messaging a larger part of the platform. The group function lets you start conversations with any of your followers, and they don’t all need to follow one another in order to chat. You can create a group by simply tapping a few names.

Tweetbot for Mac returns to Mac App Store

Tapbots, the maker of popular third-party Twitter application Tweebot, has brought back the application to the Mac App Store after pulling it over the weekend.

"We've worked with Twitter to resolve Tweetbot for Mac authentication issues," Tapbots said in a tweet on Monday. "The app should be back on the Mac App Store soon."

Twitterrific gains multi-image uploading/viewing, more media previews and other goodies

The Iconfactory on Monday pushed an update to its freemium Twitter client for the iPhone and iPad.

Twitterrific 5, now bumped to version 5.9, brings out multi-image upload support, multi-image viewing support, as well as the ability to watch Twitter animated GIFs and videos from Vine, Instagram, Moby and other services in the timeline.

Moreover, there's support for rich media previews for a wide variety of additional links.

Finally, the latest edition of the app includes half a dozen improvements while squashing a few annoying bugs.

Tweetbot for Mac pulled from Mac App Store over running afoul of Twitter’s token ceiling

Bad news, Tweetbot fans. Developer Paul Haddad woke up this morning to the realization that his popular Twitter client for the Mac has been pulled from the Mac App Store.

As if the app's disappearance wasn't enough, existing copies are experiencing authentication issues, allegedly over reaching Twitter’s strict limits on how many users are permitted to login to a particular application, as first discovered by 9to5Mac.

“We are aware of Tweetbot for Mac authentication issues,” reads the official tweet from developer Tapbots. “We have contacted Twitter and are waiting for a response. Thanks for your patience.”

Twitter’s ‘while you were away’ feature rolls out to all mobile users, due soon on the web

First revealed as part of Twitter's November 2014 platform update and formally announced on January 1, a new 'while you were away' feature is now officially available to all users of Twitter's mobile app for iOS and Android, appearing at the top of users’ timelines.

The micro-blogging startup explained in a blog post Wednesday that the feature surfaces a few of the best tweets “you probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise,” as determined by engagement and “other factors.”

BlackBerry’s official Twitter account accidentally tweets from iPhone

Someone at BlackBerry made a hilarious mess up on Tuesday when plugging the new BlackBerry Classic in a tweet that was sent on an iPhone.

While Twitter's first party apps don't show what device a tweet is sent from, third-party apps like Tweetbot show the crime committed in BlackBerry's case. You'd think its new QWERTY-touting phone would be perfect for typing a tweet.

More details surface for Twitter’s video feature: Shoot, edit, post videos from app

Twitter plans to unveil its new video feature in the next few weeks, reports Recode, and apparently some of the past details shared were wrong. Instead of a 10 minute video limit for the Twitter Video service like previously believed, it will be closer to 20 seconds and actually have a lot of similarities to the six-second, Twitter-owned Vine.
