How to manage received AirDrop files with Hazel on Mac

Every waking day I send tons of screenshots from my iPhone to my Mac via AirDrop. And every day I wish that Apple allowed users to customize the AirDrop save location. Not only is the ~/Downloads folder the default save location, but it can't be modified, not even via undocumented methods.

As a workaround, I use Hazel ($29 w/ free trial) to automate the process of moving images sent via AirDrop to my Desktop. It's a great workaround that does the job. While it would be nice if Apple allowed you to specify an exact save location, this is probably the next best thing.

One of the most under-the-radar new features to hit OS X Yosemite was the addition of extensions. Action extensions are particularly nice, because they allow apps to interface with other apps directly.

Apple seeds OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 beta 1 to developers

Thursday, Apple seeded the first beta of the upcoming OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 software update to its Mac developers, as first reported by MacRumors. Registered Mac developers can grab the installer manually through Apple's portal for developers, or automatically, using the OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility.

We'll be reporting on any interesting new features, changes and enhancements in OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 beta 1 as we encounter them.

How to remove date and time from screenshot file names on Mac

By default, every time you take a screenshot on macOS, the file generated will be named "Screen Shot date time" where "date" and "time" are replaced with the actual date and time the screenshot was taken. For most people, this is a useful feature as it allows to quickly sort screenshots depending on when they were taken. But for other people, it might be an annoyance.

Apple refreshes Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor with new features

Monday, Apple announced a major update to its pro-grade video editing and processing programs for the Mac — Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor — with a bevy of new features for motion graphics and key enhancements available to accelerate video editing, packaging and delivery.

“From Hollywood blockbuster directors to first time movie makers, Final Cut Pro X is changing the way we edit movies today,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “The updated Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor make it even easier to edit, title and package everything from short videos to feature-length films.”

Final Cut Pro 10.2 introduces new easy to use 3D titles, improved masking for color grading and effects, and native support for more camera formats, as well as GPU-accelerated RED RAW processing.

I find that using multiple libraries to separate things like work and personal life is a good strategy. New MacBook limited to online purchases, shipping times slip to 4-6 weeks across many markets

It's not just the Apple Watch, Apple's one-port $1,299 twelve-inch MacBook with a Retina screen is seeing limited availability across online and brick-and-mortar Apple Stores, with shipping times for gold models in both 256 and 512GB flavors now having slipped to 3-4 weeks. And across many international markets at availability of the new machine has already slipped to 4-6 weeks.

Worse, the sexy new notebook appears to be limited to online purchases in many locations around the world at launch. Indeed, as some users have reported on Twitter, customizing your MacBook may prompt the Online Apple Store to put up a “This customized Mac takes a bit longer to build” message.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 with Photos for Mac, 300 new emojis and other enhancements now available

As promised earlier this morning, Apple has now released the OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite software update for public consumption. It comes with the long-expected Photos app replacing iPhoto as the default consumer photo-management solution on Macs.

Other new features in the 1.52-gigabyte update include 300 new emoji with racially diverse designs, improvements to Wi-Fi networking, bug fixes, performance improvements and more. The software is available via the Mac App Store's Updates tab.
