Hello again: Apple sends out invitations for October 27 Mac event

It's official! Apple is holding an event on Thursday, October 27 on its Cupertino campus. On Wednesday afternoon the company sent out the above invitation to select members of the media, asking them to "join us for a special event."

We've been expecting an October Apple event for several weeks now, and yesterday a Recode report accurately predicted it would happen on the 27. And as the invite indicates, the focus of the event is believed to be new Mac hardware.

macOS Sierra 10.12.1 beta 5 released to developers and public beta testers

Aside from releasing a fifth beta of iOS 10.1 with Portrait mode and other changes, Apple also seeded a fifth beta of macOS Sierra 10.12.1 to its registered developers and public beta testers. The new beta arrived eight days following the previous macOS Sierra 10.12.1 beta 4 release.

macOS Sierra 10.12.1 beta 5 (build “16B2553a”) does not introduce any new outward-facing user features. The Mac software update could release for public consumption after Apple's anticipated October 27 Mac event.

WSJ: e-ink keyboards will be a standard feature on 2018 MacBooks

Following The Guardian's report, based on a verified post on Reddit alleging that Apple recently met with representatives from Australian startup Sonder Design to discuss using its dynamic keyboard technology in a future Magic Keyboard, The Wall Street Journal has corroborated that such talks took place on October 11 in China.

However, Sonder CEO Francisco Serra-Martin denied in a press release that the meeting took place. Be that as it may, WSJ claims that the new dynamic keyboards will be a standard feature on next-generation MacBook laptops, which Apple is aiming to launch in 2018.

Chrome 54 for Mac is out, replaces old Flash-based YouTube embeds with HTML5 player

Google stopped using Adobe Flash for YouTube's desktop video player back in January 2016, replacing it with an HTML5 counterpart that doesn't require any special browser plug-in to function.

Last evening saw the release of Chrome 54 for Mac, Windows and Linux which continues on Google's mission to ditch Flash in favor of HTML5: the new version replaces old Flash-based YouTube embeds on websites with HTML5.

Adobe pushes Flash Player security update fixing critical vulnerabilities

Adobe today released a new security-focused update for its Flash Player software in an effort to patch a series of vulnerabilities that could give attackers control of your computer. Although Safari on macOS Sierra disables web plugins like Flash by default, Mac owners who have a standalone Flash Player installed on their system are at risk, even if they're using Flash Player that's built into Google's Chrome browser.

Apple seeds macOS 10.12.1 beta 4 to developers and public beta testers

Apple on Tuesday released a fourth beta of what would become the first major software update to macOS Sierra following its public release last month. macOS 10.12.1 beta 4 (build 16B2548a) is now available to members of Apple Develop Program and public beta testers on Apple Beta Software Program.

The latest build is available as an over-the-air update via the Mac App Store and the Software Update mechanism on Macs that run a prior beta of macOS Sierra 10.12.1.

Apple’s rescheduled earnings call could hint at unveiling of new Macs around October 27

Apple originally told investors it would be publicizing its quarterly earnings report on Thursday, October 27.

Curiously, a notice posted on the Apple Investor Relations website earlier this week has moved up the upcoming earnings call with Wall Street investors by two days to Tuesday, October 25, over what Apple describes as a simple “scheduling conflict”.

Longtime Apple reporter Philip Elmer-DeWitt speculates that the move might mean that Apple could be planning to hold a launch event for new Macs on October 27.
