And So it Begins: Apple TV Gets its First Jailbreak Game

Ever since Apple released the $99 Apple TV 2 with AirPlay compatibility last year, fans have been holding vigilant for an App Store on the set-top box. Applications would mean games on a larger screen, and AirPlay would mean iDevices could join in on the fun.

But after nearly 12 months of waiting, Cupertino has yet to make an announcement regarding 3rd-party application support. Just as jailbreaking paved the way for the iPhone, it's also slowly unlocking the Apple TV's potential...

iWindows: A Simple Windows 7 Simulator for Your iPhone

A lot of folks jailbreak their iDevices to add functionality to iOS. Maybe they do it to download SBSettings to access toggles quicker, or to install Xpander to save time typing. For the most part, though, people tend to jailbreak for productive reasons.

But Cydia also has a lot of non-productive apps. Not just games, but entertainment-type apps that are more likely to be used in a round of "look what my phone can do," rather than actually used. Now that I've preempted what category this one falls into, here's iWindows...

Quick Cydia Tip: Sharing Links to Your Favorite Apps and Utilities

Have you ever wanted to share a jailbreak app or utility with a friend, but didn't know how to send them a direct link? The App Store has an easy way to share apps with its 'Tell a Friend' button, shouldn't there be something similar in Cydia?

Our friends over at Redmond Pie just passed on this great tip on how to do just that. While it's not as cut and dry as the App Store method, it does allow you to quickly share links to your favorite Cydia packages...

GroupTones: Assign Ringtones to Your Contact Groups

If you've gone through the process of dividing your contacts into groups on your iPhone, you'll love this next jailbreak utility. Though there's not a direct way to create groups on your device, you can create them on your Mac or PC and sync them using iTunes.

GroupTones allows you to assign specific ringtones for each of those groups, so you can tell callers apart without looking at your phone. This would help you to instantly identify if the person calling you is a friend, a co-worker, or one of your kid's playmates...

KillBackground: Kill All Running Apps from Your Multitasking Bar

Although Apple took a couple of years to implement system-wide multitasking in iOS, it seems to do the trick. It's easy to access the multitasking bar from any application, and for the most part, apps running in the background don't slow you up.

Note that I said for the most part. It seems like once you have 10 or more apps running, your iPhone starts to feel a bit sluggish. And to close them all one by one can be a tedious task. So why not download a jailbreak utility that'll do it for you in one step?

The Infamous GeoHot Partying with Jailbreak Royalty at Defcon

Justin Williams tweeted the above picture from p0sixninja's hotel room last night. The group was enjoying a little R&R after a heavy day of hacking at this year's Defcon convention. The annual event highlights new exploits and popular topics in the security community.

If you've been jailbreaking for a while, chances are you'll recognize a few people in the picture above. Instantly identifiable are Saurik, the mastermind behind Cydia, and the original iPhone hacker GeoHot...

AT&T To Begin Moving Jailbroken Hotspot-ers to Tiered Data Soon

AT&T got rid of their unlimited data plans quite some time ago. However, folks who had unlimited data before the plan was removed are likely still enjoying the all-you-can-eat option.

Thanks to the grandfather clause, customers should get to keep those unlimited plans until they sign another contract — unless their iPhone happens to be jailbroken and they're using an application like MyWi...

Comex Wins a Pwnie Award for his JailbreakMe Exploit, GeoHot Wins Best Song

For those who aren't familiar with the event, the Pwnie Awards is an annual awards show celebrating failures and achievements in the security community. This year's ceremony took place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the BlackHat security conference.

All together there were 9 awards handed out, and it probably won't surprise you that a certain iDevice hacker took home one of them. As a matter of fact, 2 well known members of the jailbreak community ended up taking home Pwnies...

‘Safari Upload Enabler’ Lets You Upload Files from Your iPhone

With jailbreak utilities like iFile and Safari Download Manager, your iDevice can seem more like an actual computer than a phone or MP3 player. The two apps allow you to manually download files, edit them, and move them around from folder to folder.

However, there hasn't been a convenient way to natively upload files in iOS (that I've known of), until now. Safari Upload Enabler just surfaced in Cydia, and it allows you to upload content from inside Mobile Safari...

No Untethered Jailbreak Coming Until iOS 5

If you are currently jailbroken on iOS 4.3.5, we have some bad news. There is going to be no untethered jailbreak until iOS 5 is released. This is because the various jailbreak teams are saving their exploits for iOS 5. They could release an untethered jailbreak right now, but then it would take longer to find an exploit for iOS 5...

Forbes Highlights Jailbreak Hacker Comex

If you've ever considered jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad, no doubt you've heard about an iOS hacker going by the handle Comex, the guy who discovered several important exploits, and the creator of JailbreakMe.

Besides his Twitter handle, we don't know much about Comex. A Forbes journalist did a bit of digging and found out who Comex really is, and managed to talk to him...

UShare: Copy and Tweet YouTube Links From the Native iOS App [Updated]

Finally! If there was a utility that could do this before, I wasn't aware of it. UShare allows you to copy and tweet your favorite YouTube video URLs from the iOS YouTube app.

Well-known jailbreak developer moeseth submits the utility as part of his TweakWeek run. The popular contest has developers submitting one free tweak a day, for 7 days, and this one in particular is a fine example of the project...
