Chronic Dev Team Shows Off iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak On Video

We've been waiting for months to see evidence that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is indeed ready for prime time, and pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team has just released a demo video of the iOS 5 untether to wet our appetites.

The simple video indicates that the highly-anticipated jailbreak is nearly ready. However, we don't have an exact ETA on when it will arrive.

FireCore Releases Major Update for aTV Flash

Even though jailbreaking hasn't done much for the Apple TV what it has for the other iDevices, it still has made quite an impact. FireCore's aTV Flash (Black) application is a perfect example of that, adding several features to the popular media hub.

For those not familiar with the software, aTV Flash is a jailbreak application for the Apple TV 2 that includes a web browser and support for streaming dozens of file formats. It is the app for Apple TV jailbreakers, and it just received a major update...

EFF Pleads to Make Jailbreaking Legal For all Devices

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has asked the US Copyright Office to make legal the jailbreaking of all consumer electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles. The proposal aims to remove jailbreaking, or gaining root access to a device, from being prohibited by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The EFF has also asked that electronic companies not oppose the jailbreaking of their products.

In July of 2010 the EFF won its first landmark case for this cause when the US government passed a law making the jailbreaking of Apple's iPhone and iOS platform legal. Now, the EFF wants to make jailbreaking legal on all devices.

How to Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 With Ac1dSn0w

Ac1dSn0w is a tool that's received its fair share of controversy over what's contained in the code and what isn't. Just recently it received an update to remove copyrighted code.

With that in mind, we've created a tutorial that shows you how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 with Ac1dSn0w. Many have wondered if there are any benefits to using Ac1dSn0w over RedSn0w or other jailbreak tools. Check inside as we answer that question and more.

How to Save iOS 5 SHSH Blobs and Create Custom Firmware to Downgrade iOS 5.x Using iFaith

As we told you yesterday, iFaith — the Windows based tool that allows you to manage SHSH blobs on all devices sans the iPhone 4S — has been updated with the ability to save iOS 5.x blobs, and create custom firmware that you can use to downgrade your iOS 5 device.

It works very similar to RedSn0w's stitching feature, except the big difference here is that it encompasses Apple's APTicket and features iOS 5 compatibility.

Up until now it was impossible to downgrade an iOS 5.x device to a previous version of iOS 5. That's no longer the case, as our video tutorial shows you inside...

Ac1dSn0w Beta 2 Jailbreak Tool Released, Fixes Copyright Infringement Issues

The Pwn Dev Team has released a major update to their jailbreak tool, Ac1dSn0w. The tool was made available to the world a couple of weeks ago as an alternative to other apps for jailbreaking, like RedSn0w and PwnageTool.

Ac1dSn0w Beta 2 supposedly fixes the copyright infringement issues that the original beta possessed. The download file size has also been significantly reduced from over 100MB to about 11MB.

H1Siri: App Claiming Full Siri Functionality For the iPhone 4 Surfaces in Cydia

Ever since videos started popping up online of Siri working on non-iPhone 4S devices, everyone has wondered one thing: when will it be available to the masses? Apple has restricted Siri to its latest handset, so hackers have taken it upon themselves to set it free.

Up until this point, the digital assistant port has only been possible for knowledgeable folks with access to iPhone 4S files. But a jailbreak utility has just surfaced in Cydia that could change that. The app is H1Siri, and it claims to offer full Siri functionality on the iPhone 4...

iFaith SHSH Tool Receives Major Update

Infamous iOS hacker and Sn0wBreeze creator iH8sn0w just released a major update for his iFaith application. Like TinyUmbrella, iFaith allows you to save your device's SHSH blobs, which are needed to preserve your ability to downgrade firmware in the future.

The update supports iOS versions up to 5.0.1, but isn't yet compatible with A5 iDevices. There also doesn't seem to be a Mac version available. But if you own an A4 device and have access to a Windows computer, we highly recommend you download the new iFaith...

Chronic Dev Team: We’ve Already Received Over 10 Million Crash Reports From Jailbreak Supporters

Front man for the Chronic Dev Team, Joshua Hill (also known as p0sixninja), has announced a landmark number of crash reports that have already been submitted to his team. The Chronic Dev Team recently released an app that collects iOS crash reports in iTunes and sends them to the team's private servers to help find exploits for the future iOS 5 untethered jailbreak.

After only one week, the team of hackers has collected over 10 million crash reports from jailbreak supporters worldwide. Joshua and the rest of the Chronic Dev Team are working to parse the crash report data to help create a stable untethered jailbreak for Apple's iOS 5.

TinyUmbrella Updated With Support For iOS 5.1 Beta

TinyUmbrella, the utility used to save your iOS device's SHSH blobs for future firmware downgrades, has just been updated to support the recently released iOS 5.1 beta.

Even though we've warned jailbreakers not to update past iOS 5.0, and there's currently no way to downgrade, it's always a good idea to have your iDevices' SHSH blobs on file...

Why Piracy Hurts the Jailbreak Community

A recent post by jailbreak developer Filippo Bigarella really hit me. Filippo is a relatively well-known developer in the jailbreak community, and his most recent app, Springtomize 2, has been making huge splashes since its public release yesterday.

We have a great relationship with Filippo at iDB, and I consider him a friend. He's a good guy who makes incredible software. His stance on pirating Springtomize says a lot about how piracy hurts the jailbreak community.

Apple Isn’t the Only Company Who Worries About Jailbreaking

There's a new jailbreak in town, and it isn't for the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Research In Motion PlayBook tablet has been jailbroken. For the first time in the Blackberry maker's history, hackers have gained root access to the OS.

Why is this a big deal? Not only is it the first official "jailbreak" to occur outside of Apple's ecosystem, but it's also a slap in the face to RIM's enterprise-minded, security-conscious mindset.
