Sentry teases video for upcoming ‘iOS MiniPlayer’ tweak

Do you love iTunes 11's MiniPlayer so much you wish you could just take it with you when you leave the house? If so, Sentry's latest concept for an iOS MiniPlayer will be a dream come true.

Sentry's iOS MiniPlayer concept is a bar-shaped widget which displays the name of the song currently playing, along with the album art and subtitles for the album and band. Tap on the title, and you've got basic playback controls for pause, fast forward, and rewind. There are even bars at the side of the MiniPlayer which you can drag to hide or reposition the widget...

Stanford’s free iOS developer’s class returns to iTunes U

Want to get started coding apps for iOS? Stanford University is relaunching their class 'Coding Together: Developing Apps for iPhone and iPad', with new material for iOS 6. We previously reported on the class in 2011. Since enrollment in the class is free on iTunes U and on Piazza, all you really need to participate is enough familiarity programming in C to get you through a couple first-year computer science credits. Over the course of the program, the class will teach students to program in Objective C.

The class is short, running from January 22nd to March 28th. While the class has already started, you can still sign up for enrollment on iTunes U and on Piazza as late as February 1st. You can also peek at the free lectures on iTunes if you are curious...

GrouPlay brings democracy to your iOS party playlist

Settling on a good party playlist can be difficult. Say you've got friends with different tastes in music, and your music library doesn't have enough danceable tracks on its own that everyone can enjoy. If it's a big party, you don't want just anyone touching your iPod, and you also don't want someone with questionable taste to hijack the music for the party.

With the GrouPlay app, anyone with access to your Wi-Fi network can contribute songs from their own music library to your temporary party playlist, provided they have an iPhone 3GS, 3rd generation iPod touch, iPad, or later. Once the songs are uploaded, the real fun begins...

Here's a nice last minute holiday gift idea: if your loved ones use Apple products, give them iTunes Gift Cards that can be used to add credits to their iTunes account. Usually these things are delivered physically, but Walmart is having a sale where it's offering a $50 iTunes Gift Card for $40, an instant $10 saving.

Additionally, you card gets delivered through email right after purchase, depending on your credit card issuer's rules. Walmart is no stranger to such promotions. Back in August, the retailer was selling $100 iTunes cards for $80...

Apple releases iTunes 11.0.1 with duplicate item finding and other fixes

With iTunes 11, Apple's music software received a complete, much-needed, makeover. Unfortunately, it also removed some much-loved features like Cover Flow and the ability to find your duplicate track listings.

Well today, users can get at least one of those features back via a new update. Apple has just released iTunes 11.0.1 to the public, and as expected, it includes the duplicate item finding feature and other fixes...

iTunes movies, rentals launch in 42 new countries

As part of the massive iPhone 5 holiday roll-out in fifty new countries, Apple last week launched the iTunes Music Store in 56 new countries, including Russia, Turkey and South Africa. Now, early reports revealed places like India, Indonesia, Russia and Turkey got access to iTunes movies as well. Apple on its part promised in a media release that the movie store "will be available in select additional countries". According to a new report, the company on Wednesday activated iTunes movie store in as much as 42 new countries where the music store just launched...

Upcoming iTunes 11 update will restore duplicate song detection

I hope you've grown accustomed to the new, highly visual library views focused on media artwork in iTunes 11 and don't mind Apple dropping Cover Flow because that feature ain't coming back. What Apple will add to the redesigned jukebox software is the ability to detect duplicate song, which mysteriously disappeared with the latest iTunes update. That's what the Wall Street Journal tech columnist Walt Mossberg heard from his own sources within Apple. The company reportedly told him it will restore the duplicate song detection feature "in a minor update of the program"...

Apple officially launches iTunes Music Store in 56 new countries

Yesterday we reported that the iTunes Music Store had gone live in Russia, Turkey and a handful of other countries. The rollout came just one day before Apple's rumored iTunes event in Moscow.
