TV ad teams up with iOS app to give us a glimpse at the future

Every once in a while, you get a glimpse of a technology that makes you say "cool." And the latest tech to cross our "cool" radars is this interactive TV ad from Channel 5's The Gadget Show.

Using the complimentary iOS app, you can interact with the spot in real-time by panning a full 360-degrees around the studio's set. Confused? Keep reading to see a video of it in action...

Samuel L. Jackson stars in new iPhone 4S commercial

As noted by TheNextWeb, a new iPhone 4S commercial has surfaced starring the popular actor Mr. Samuel L. Jackson. The ad popped up this afternoon during an episode of ESPN's SportsCenter.

What's interesting here is that although the commercial seems to fall in line with previous Apple 4S ads — focus on Siri, production value — it appears that Verizon is behind the spot. Check it out...

The case for a four-inch iPhone with 16:9 display

There's no shortage of iPhone mockups these days, a tell-tale indication of the launch date drawing near (we're looking towards a Fall launch). We already told you about one possible iPhone mockup and shared an interesting theory regarding the argument for a four-inch iPhone.

The problem is, the vast majority of artists' renditions depict an iPhone with a blown up display that, however, features the same 3:2 aspect ratio as all iPhone and iPod touch models back to 2007.

So, how about a four-incher with a 16:9 aspect ratio display?

How to officially unlock your AT&T iPhone without losing your untethered jailbreak

The good news came out a week ago that AT&T would finally allow its customers with an off contract iPhone to officially unlock their device for free. In essence, the steps required to get the ball rolling are pretty simple. You just need to place a call to AT&T or hop on a chat with them online.

After collecting some basic information from you, AT&T will take its sweet time (72 hours to 2 weeks) to verify you are indeed illegible for unlocking your iPhone. Upon approval, you will then receive an email with instructions to complete the unlock.

But the caveat is that, if like many people out there you care about your jailbreak, you might not be able to update without losing your untethered jailbreak. This was one of my main concerns at first. I requested the unlock authorization from AT&T for my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1, and even though it is not my primary device, I didn't want to lose my untether jailbreak.

But unlike the email AT&T sends you upon approval of your iPhone unlock suggests, you do not have to completely restore your iPhone to complete the unlock...

Walmart adopts Apple’s boutique store concept with stylish displays carrying iOS devices

Walmart has been selling the new iPad in select stores since the device launched last month. They've also had other Apple products on offer for some time.

Realizing it leaves a lot to be desired, the world's largest retailer is apparently ready to take the shopping experience for its demanding Apple customers to the next level.

Nice-looking photos of stylish Apple displays inside Walmart's store in Arkansas depict a radical departure from the retailer's otherwise dull and poorly maintained shelves carrying electronics.

Akin to a store-within-a-store idea seen at other retailers, the redesigned Apple section would suggest that the mega-retailer is keen on exploring Apple's boutique store concept...

Wall Street thinks Apple sold between 26-44 million iPhones last quarter

With Apple's earning release for the past quarter that ended two weeks ago now just eight days away, analysts are running their spreadsheets like crazy, falling over themselves to guesstimate just how many iPhones the company sold.

And as the iPhone lineup accounts for more than half of Apple's revenue, no wonder it's become Apple's most important business metric. AAPL passing the $600 milestone also owes much to the success of the iPhone, as does the company's projected $1 trillion valuation.

It's almost as if Apple's future and fortunes depend solely on the iPhone. With that in mind, seasoned watchers should ask themselves whether Apple can retain its crown of the world's top smartphone maker in the March quarter.

And, is the six-month old iPhone 4S still attractive enough to keep people interested until the fabled iPhone 5 (or whatever it ends up being called) arrives later this year? As always, only time will tell. But one thing is certain: Wall Street has high hopes in Apple's ability to keep the iPhone freight train chugging along...

Awesome Calendar: when you can do it all, anything’s possible

Yunasoft’s new productivity/utility entry in the iTunes App Store, Awesome Calendar, boasts big about its capabilities. As well it should. After all, one of the first things smartphones were supposed to do, and do well, was help us balance busy schedules.  Time management apps have to go the extra mile to impress us, and the all-in-one tool Awesome Calendar looks like it might just outpace the competition.

Feature set meets interface is the name of the game when multifunctional is the main requirement, and Awesome Calendar does a beautiful job of marrying the two. Its calendar, notepad, and to-do list modules work in concert to bring users lives into productive harmony.  Each of these aspects feature some extra functionality to make them shine, with Awesome Calendar’s superior design balancing form and function along the way...

iOS BitTorrent client iTransmission gets long-awaited update

BitTorrent users rejoice. iTransmission, the popular iOS BitTorrent client, has finally been updated to support the latest versions of Apple's mobile software.

The jailbreak utility, which was abandoned by developer Mike Chen sometime last year, has just been resurrected by ioshomebrew as iTransmission 2...

Some Apple Stores replacing iPhone 4 models with iPhone 4S

9to5Mac is reporting this weekend that Apple is experiencing "atypical inventory shortages" of white 16GB iPhone 4 replacement units. As a result, it seems like [at least] some iPhone 4 users seeking hardware replacements could be in for a nice surprise.

According to the report, Apple has instructed some of its Apple Store Genius Bars to start replacing problematic white 16GB iPhone 4 models with compatible iPhone 4S units...

A bulletproof iPhone case, because you can never be too careful

We all like to protect our iPhones and iPads as much as possible, which explains why the case making business is such a lucrative one. If you look anywhere online, then you'll be able to find an iPhone or iPad case to suit your mood and price range. Choice is clearly king.

Even with all that choice though, we are willing to say that it is a safe bet that you haven't come across one of these cases before. For starters, it isn't the best looking case around there, and it certainly isn't the thinnest at one-inch thick. It ain't the cheapest either, at $648 per unit.

It does have one thing going for it,though. Namely, this particular case is bulletproof...

Apple working on high quality “unibody” earbuds

Imagine that, another patent application has popped up in the United States Patent and Trademark Office database this week with Apple's name on it. The filing is entitled Ultrasonically Welded Structures and Methods for Making the Same.

But don't let the ridiculously long name scare you. The patent is part of a group of cross-referenced filings that all make up different parts of a pair of high quality unibody headphones that it seems Apple is working on in its labs...

Psychologist enters your dreams through an iPhone app

Few apps in the App Store can claim to be part of an experiment, but Dream:On can.

Created by self proclaimed "psychologist, author and magician," Professor Richard Wiseman, the app aims to influence a user's dreams once they fall asleep, all through the power of sound.

Whether it works or not, well, we'll just have to see...
