Official: iPhone trade-in program launches today across Apple Stores in US

Despite Tim Cook dodging questions about the then-supposed iPhone trade-in program during June's earnings call, the rumors have turned out true after all.

Apple on Friday officially launched the new iPhone Reuse and Recycling Program, basically a trade-in initiative aimed at boosting iPhone sales at Apple's own retail stores, which currently comprise only twenty percent of iPhones sold (Cook wants to sell half of all iPhones at company stores).

Mophie’s battery cases get playful color options

Mophie's Helium series of battery-extending cases for Apple's iPhone 5 are a no-brainer for power users who can't get through their day on a single charge. The California-based accessory maker offers the Helium cases in three flavors: the 13 percent thinner standard-edition Juice Pack Helium with a 1,500mAh battery, the even thinner Juice Pack Air (just 0.63-inches thick) with a bigger 1,700mAh built-in battery and the latest Juice Pack Plus which rocks a 2,100 mAh battery, good for an additional ten hours of 3G/LTE talk time/web use.

And now, in time for Apple's September 10 big reveal of the colorful iPhone 5S/5C, Mophie has introduced a burst of color options...

AT&T vacation blackout confirms rumored September 20 iPhone 5S/5C launch

Following a report that T-Mobile is canceling vacations for store employees between September 20 and September 22, another story has affirmed that rival AT&T is now following suit. Specifically, the carrier is said to be blacking out vacation days for the second half of September, seemingly in preparation for the iPhone 5S/5C launch date.

That's a tell-tale sign of an impending iPhone launch: carriers want to ensure enough staff is on hand to handle an influx of customers at launch. Notably, AT&T did the same last year ahead of the iPhone 5 launch, as well as every single year starting with the original iPhone launch back in 2007.

Putting these pieces together, new iPhones are very likely going on sale in the United States and a few major international markets on Friday, September 20, which would be ten days after the official unveiling...

Best Buy offers 50% off iPhone 5 for Labor Day

Next Monday is Labor Day, a national holiday in the United States, and the nation's top electronics retailer Best Buy is hoping to counter Apple's upcoming iPhone trade-in program by offering the iPhone 5 half price. That's right, you can get a brand new 16 or 32GB iPhone 5 for at least half of its normal asking price, by trading-in your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S in good condition (no water damage or screen cracks).

Of course, you're expected to commit your soul to AT&T, Verizon or Sprint for two more years. This is obviously becoming a thing for Best Buy: just two weeks ago, they were offering a $200 credit in exchange for your iPhone 4S in working condition...

Another Android exec leaves Google nest as Silicon Valley romance rumors swirl

It's not often that Silicon Valley gets to mix tech with romance, but there appears to be a full-blown soap opera erupting in the executive suites at Google.

Hugo Barra, who as product manager for Android was the face of Google's mobile software, is moving to China and smartphone maker Xiaomi.

But what's got tongues wagging is that Barra's departure comes amidst news that he leaves a Google romance. Google's co-founder - who just split with his wife - is on the rebound: with a Google employee. Confused? Don't worry, we'll explain it all below, as well as what the product chief's new job may mean for Android and Apple...

Apple invention lets you change brightness of UI elements independently of content

Although Apple already permits owners of Mac, iPhone, iPod and iPad devices to adjust the user interface in a global way, a newly-published patent application describes how certain elements of the UI could be adapted. The application details a method to filter certain areas of the user interface, permitting users to adjust certain areas of the interface while leaving other locations untouched.

Along with giving us more control of an application's user interface, the adjustments outlined in the application titled 'User Interface Contrast Filter' could help improve such things as battery life...

T-Mobile blacking out employee vacations for September 20 iPhone launch?

In another sign indicating Apple's upcoming iPhone 5S/5C could land on store shelves shortly following a rumored September 10 introduction, T-Mobile USA has reportedly blacked out vacations for its U.S. retail employees from Friday, September 20 and through Sunday, September 22.

While a new report cautions there's no telling whether the blocked period is related to new iPhones, Apple's handsets have historically made their way to retail stores a week or two after the official announcement so the nation's fourth-largest telco would be wise to ensure its retail army is ready for the big day...

Top Apple blogger debunks September iPads, iPhone 5S scratch test and other crazy rumors

Apple's CEO Tim Cook and the company's leadership team must be hating Mark Gurman, the most connected Apple blogger and Time's pick for its 2013 Best 25 Bloggers list. He's leaked much of the iOS 7 redesign ahead of June's revelation and nailed the iPhone 5 features well before its release.

Two weeks ago, Mark was first to acknowledge an iPhone 5S with gold colorway. He's also confirmed fingerprint scanning - the iPhone 5S's killer feature - and said the iPad build of iOS 7 was running behind schedule.

Taking a number of burning issues occupying the collective minds of the Apple rumor-mill community, Gurman has now brought into question a few popular misconception concerning Apple's upcoming product launches that are making rounds today...

Bloomberg: Apple may announce new iPads come September 10

Several credulous publications have confirmed with their deeply entrenched sources that Apple will be indeed revealing the iPhone 5S and 5C at a media event on September 10, possibly even launching iOS 7 for public consumption the same day. As for the upcoming iPads, conventional wisdom suggests the company might launch a fifth-generation iPad and possibly a Retina iPad mini at a separate media event in order not to take the wind out of the iPhone's sails.

People have suggested an October launch for new iPads and that just about makes sense to us, but now Bloomberg is casually mentioning that both new iPhones and iPads are on Apple's agenda for September 10...

Apple’s iPhone Reuse and Recycle Program launches August 30, details here

Yesterday, a flurry of details was released regarding Apple's upcoming iPhone trade-in program, a sales initiative in partnership with the recycling firm BrightStar aimed at boosting iPhone sales and upgrades at company-run retail outlets across the United States. Sources stepped forward today, offering new details concerning the official name, availability, launch date and terms and conditions.

As suspected all along, the trade-ins will be handled through Apple's existing Reuse and Recycle Program, which has been available for quite some time. Furthermore, the same program will serve as Apple’s new in-store recycling program.

Apple patent turns iPhone into smart home remote

The introduction of numerous media devices - from your television to DVD player and stereo - coupled with the growth of smart homes would seem to cry out for Apple-like simplification. It just so happens, there is a patent for that. Apple has patented a way to control your home media collection right from your iPhone.

The patent, filed a half-decade ago by the creator of the iTunes Remote app, uses "scenes" to adjust your home multimedia to fit settings like "Romantic Movie Night", "Dinner," or simply "Relax."...
