iPhone 5 won’t support concurrent voice and data on Verizon or Sprint

Remember back when Verizon first launched the iPhone 4? AT&T, whose network was struggling at the time, launched a campaign highlighting the fact that AT&T users could talk and browse the web at the same time, and Verizon users couldn't.

Over time, the problem faded into the background. And since Verizon's LTE network — which is now in nearly 400 markets — supports simultaneous voice and data, we didn't think it'd be a problem with the iPhone 5. But apparently, we were wrong...

Poll: will you pre-order the iPhone 5 or stand in line?

Apple is taking iPhone 5 pre-orders starting 12:01am Pacific, 3am Eastern on September 14. That’s tomorrow and less than 24 hours from now. In addition to the online Apple Store, carriers Sprint, AT&T and Verizon have confirmed they will be taking pre-orders for the phone at the same time.

Several regional U.S. carriers also announced availability and retailer Walmart said it will be taking pre-orders at its U.S. stores starting at 8am, priced at $189.97 with a two-year AT&T, Verizon or Sprint contract.

With plenty of options for those who are planning on upgrading, I'm wondering if you prefer pre-ordering or standing in line for this year's iPhone...

Don’t want to wait in line for the iPhone 5? TaskRabbit will do it for you

If you don't plan on pre-ordering your iPhone this weekend, but still want to grab the handset as soon as it launches, your only other option is to stand in line at an Apple, or other retail, store.

Queues for new Apple products are banal, sometimes starting a week or more ahead of launches, with hundreds of people. But if waiting in line isn't for you, these folks are up to the task...

The iPhone 5 promo hits YouTube

Apple's promotional video detailing the biggest iPhone 5 features went live shortly following yesterday's series of announcements, but you need QuickTime, Apple's media software, to watch it in your browser.

Many hate QuickTime, especially Windows PC users. The QuickTime for Windows installer is nearly a hundred megabyte download and the software has become infamous for its resource hoginess (is that even a word?).

Luckily, two hours ago the company uploaded the clip to its YouTube channel and we've embedded it here for your viewing pleasure...

How the iPhone 5 stacks up against the competition

Apple is going to release its sixth-generation smartphone later this month, and the competition has never been tougher. Yesterday's iPhone event capped off a two week run of handset announcements from Samsung, Nokia and Motorola.

Samsung, for its part, is on fire right now with its Galaxy S III, selling more than 20 million units in 100 days. And both Nokia's Lumia 920 and Motorola's RAZR HD look promising. Here's how the iPhone 5 compares to those devices...

AT&T, Verizon and Sprint won’t support the iPhone 5 HD voice at launch

Of all the three major carriers in the United States, none is able to support the iPhone 5 high-definition voice technology at launch. Specifically, carriers AT&T and Verizon don't yet support wideband audio and Sprint's HD Voice technology is only compatible with CDMA x1 technology whereas the iPhone 5 taps WCDMA networks for the feature. There is, of course, hope that major U.S. telcos will catch up and update their backend for the iPhone 5 wideband audio...

Apple to accept iPhone 5 pre-orders beginning tomorrow at 12:01am

Apple told us during yesterday's presser that it will begin accepting pre-orders for the new iPhone 5 tomorrow, September 14. As the company stopped short of specifying the exact time frame, Wired's Gadget Lab reached out to Apple's PR and the company has confirmed that online pre-orders for the iPhone 5 will go live in just less than 24 hours, on September 14 at 12:01...

Apple just scrapes past Amazon in JD Power’s tablet satisfaction survey

Apple's iPad is once again ranked as the No. 1 tablet in the United States. However, the company's lead over Amazon's Kindle Fire is as razor-thin as its products. According to customer satisfaction researcher JD Power, Apple scored 848 points with Amazon close behind with 842 out of 1,000.

The Cupertino, Calif. firm can be thankful that US consumers found the iPad tops for performance and ease of use -- categories heavily weighed in the survey -- while Amazon hit it out of the ballpark in price, an area carrying just 16 percent of the final score...

The iPhone 5: It’s all in your head

"How will people know that I upgrade?", asked rhetorically a guy standing in the line for a new iPhone in Samsung's anti-Apple ad from last November. Breathing new life into the "iPhone is boring" meme, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel sent the camera out on the street to ask people to check out the new iPhone 5 whereas in reality they were looking at the current iPhone 4S. Apparently, a lot of people are willing to believe that an iPhone 4S is the iPhone 5...

Cricket, C Spire, GCI, Bluegrass Cellular and Appalachian Wireless landing the iPhone 5 on September 28

Regional United States carriers C Spire and prepaid wireless operator Cricket Wireless will begin offering Apple's latest iPhone 5 on Friday, September 28, it has been confirmed. Additionally, Alaska's GCI, Bluegrass Cellular and Appalachian Wireless announced September 28 availability of the iPhone 5, a week after the device becomes available on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint in the United States...

The iPhone 5 keynote in 4 minutes

Still haven't seen the iPhone 5 Keynote? Strapped for time? We took the liberty to cut out all of the fluff, and other non-iPhone 5 hardware announcements from yesterday's keynote. By doing so, we were able to cut it down to just a hair over 4 minutes, while still maintaining the vast majority of the important hardware details.

If you haven't yet seen the keynote, and you're solely interested in the iPhone 5 hardware, then this is for you.

The iPhone 5 keynote now available as high-def iTunes download

If you wanted to watch Tim Cook and his team the iPhone 5, iOS 6, iTunes and new iPods but don't want to stream, you can now download the entire iPhone 5 keynote as iTunes video podcast, free of charge. Though Apple did not provide a live stream of yesterday's event, just a few hours later the company made available a streaming video of the presentation through its web site. If history is indication, following the Apple.com stream and iTunes podcast it shouldn't be too long until the keynote pops up on Apple's YouTube channel...
