Movies Rented on The iPhone 4 Can’t Be Transferred Back to iTunes

iLounge reveals a bit of discerning information that took a mysterious amount of time to surface. It turns out that the iPhone 4 shares the same limitations as the iPad and the Apple TV in regards to being unable to transfer rented movies back to your iTunes library.

The ability to move rentals had never been a problem before when renting on previous iPhone models. An excerpt from the iPhone iOS 4 User Guide briefly mentions the limitation on page 99, and it reads as such:

What is an Apple Fanboy?

A couple weeks ago I added this topic to my Evernote list of non-news stories to write about. In fear of this topic circulating the web waves I figure now is as good a time as any to open this topic up for clarification and debate. What actions or attitudes must an everyday Apple supporter exhibit before they are justly (or not) called a Fanboy?

Often I read comment sections on sites like ours and when Apple products are written about this term flies around like beach balls in a sports stadium. Showing your appreciation and opinion on why you proclaim your iPhone, iPad or other device as being the best, will instantly grant you the Fanboy label. Rarely is the term assigned to someone with any other intention than to call them a blazing idiot (which is much worse than just a regular idiot).

I have said before that I cannot see myself ever owning any phone but an iPhone. I have reasons with little relevance to this piece but will say that if for nothing else my devotion is confirmed by the sheer ease of synchronization with my other Apple products. I admit it's a circular argument (meaning I say I won't stop using Apple products since they work so well with other Apple products), but that is my experience.

iPhone 4 Production Finally Catching up With Demand

Rodman and Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar tells GigaOm that waiting for an iPhone 4 will become noticeably easier by the end of September. If the production of devices finally gets on par with their demand, Kumar says the iPhone 4 should sell 14 million units in the 3rd quarter and 15 million in the 4th. What's unbelievable is that those predictions are actually feasible and not ridiculous.

Without a "big" delay in supply Kumar believes that Apple can lynch off the flow of supply enough to stay well ahead of their expectations. I would say he's right given the record numbers thus far.

It's worth mentioning that the mentioned analyst cites that LG is pumping out more 9.7 displays for the iPad's production as well. His predictions are that the popular handheld should be able to achieve 5 to 6 million units this quarter. Not bad for being a big iPod Touch.

What has your experience been lately? Have any of you tried waltzing into an Apple (or other retailer) and been able to walk out with an iPhone 4? Let us know how your luck has been in obtaining the new iDevice in the comment section.

Review: Case-Mate Gelli Checkmate for iPad

I don't like cases. I really don't, especially on Apple products where the design and the look and feel are a big part of the experience. However, I've been changing my mind about cases over the past week after I received the Case-Mate Gelli Checkmate case for iPad.

Although I've never wanted to stick my iPhone into a case, I feel it's a bit different with the iPad. Unlike my iPhone, the iPad is big, doesn't fit in my pocket, and goes around many hands. For these reasons, I felt my iPad was actually much more vulnerable than my iPhone was so I decided to give it some protection.

The Case-Mate Gelli comes in 3 translucent colors and gives your iPad case a funky design that will definitely set it apart from the rest. I got mine in grey which actually is more "clear" than "grey". You can also get it in a flashy green or blue, but these colors are definitely too much for me.

Not only do I like the look of the Gelli but I also like the feel of it. It feels really good in my hands as the thermoplastic material used gives me more grip and prevents my iPad from sliding off my hands or off my legs, depending on my position.

It's very simple to put on, and once on, it obviously gives you easy access to every port or button. The case goes all the way to the front of the iPad to cover just about a millimeter past the bezel. This way, even if the iPad falls flat on the screen, it will be protected, that is assuming the ground would be completely flat of course.

I feel a little let down that Case-Mate didn't throw in a free screen protector in the box. That's no big deal though, we will use the InvisibleShield for iPad.

Pros:

Perfect for every day usage Light Stylish, elegant Not "bulky" Feels good in your hands Adds grip Provides great protection Relatively inexpensive ($36.95)

Cons:

Not a heavy duty case Doesn't come with a screen protector

Is the Case-Mate Gelli a heavy duty case for iPad? No, it's not. It is however a light and stylish case that will do a great job at protecting your iPad in average every day usage. The Gelli completely sold me on iPad cases and I'm glad I now have it to protect my iPad from those awful scratches I would get from putting it on the coffee table.

I'm still not sure I would want it for my iPhone because I don't feel my iPhone needs protection. However, my fiancee Tina will be getting the Case-Mate Gelli for iPhone 4 as soon as she gets her white iPhone. She's much less careful with her devices than I am and will need something like this to protect her iPhone.

At $36.95 from our iPhone Store, the Case-Mate Gelli case for iPad is a product I highly recommend. You can order the Case-Mate Gelli here.

Apple Releases iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone and iOS 3.2.1 for iPad. Jailbreakers Beware!

Apple just released iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. This software update is said to fix the antenna issue which is supposedly related to a bad math formula regarding the the display of the iPhone's service signal bars.

At the same time, Apple also updated iOS 3.2.1 for iPad.

As always when a new firmware comes out, it is highly recommended you DO NOT update if you rely on a jailbreak or unlock. Updating your device might prevent you from jailbreaking or unlocking it in the future.

You can download the new firmwares from our iPhone downloads section.

How to Use Your iPhone 4 Data Plan to Get Free Internet On Your iPad 3G

If you have both an iPhone 4 and an iPad 3G, I'm sure you tried to switch SIM cards to see if you could get free 3G on your iPad using your iPhone 4 data plan. In that case, you probably were unsucessful and even though you would get 3G connection, you couldn't make use of it.

The guys over at TUAW figured out that to get your iPhone 4 3G data plan on your iPad 3G, you simply need to change the APN settings. To do so, go to your iPad settings under the Cellular Data section, enter the following APN info:

APN name: wap.cingular username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM password: CINGULAR1

Then reboot your iPad and you should be good to go.

Needless to say that AT&T might not be very happy about this little workaround. Like always when using those kinda tricks, be careful as AT&T might figure out what you're doing and send a SWAT team over to your house to get this iPad back or something.

How to Install Flash On The iPad

Last week, Comex, the developer behind the Spirit jailbreak, gave us a preview of Frash, which is nothing less but Flash for Android ported to the iPad. Today it seems someone released a .deb of Frash, and while Comex is not opposed to it, you've got to understand it's just an alpha version.

This tutorial will show you how to install Frash/Flash on a jailbroken iPad.

Step 1: Make sure your iPad is jailbroken. If not, jailbreak your iPad using Spirit.

Step 2: Download Frash.deb. For legal reasons, I cannot link to the file but a Google search can go a long way, if you know what I mean...

Step 3: SSH into your iPad and navigate to /var/root/Media.

Step 4: In the Media folder, create a folder called "Cydia". Open the Cydia folder you just created and create another folder called "AutoInstall".

Step 5: Upload Frash.deb to the AutoInstall folder.

Step 6: Reboot your iPad a few times.

Done! Now navigate to any site that uses Flash. You should see the red F logo where Flash is played. Tap the logo and the Flash animation will start playing

Again, this is just an alpha version that wasn't even officially released by Comex. You may want to try it just for fun if you dare. I suspect it will be posted in a repo on Cydia soon so you may want to wait for that.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Frash: Android Flash Ported to the iPad

A few weeks  ago, Comex, the  developer of  Spirit, shared with us  a video of Flash running on the iPhone. Today, Comex introduces Frash, which is basically a port of Flash  for Android on the iPad.

Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the iPad MobileSafari browser, but support for other devices (3GS and iPhone 4 only due to hardware requirements) is on the way, as well as support for iOS 4.

Comex won't release Frash until it is stable and that might take a while. If you're a developers and you want to join the effort at http://github.com/comex/frash.

USB Typewriter Makes Best Obsolete Accessory for iPad

Are you feeling a little nostalgic of the good old days prior to the PC revolution? If so, and most importantly if you have an extra $400 to spare in a somewhat useless accessory, then the USB Typewriter might be for you.

Dubbed as a "groundbreaking innovation in the field of obsolescence", old fashioned manual typewriters can be used as keyboards for iPad.

According to the website USB Typewriter doesn't involve messy wiring and doesn't alter the look and feel of the typewriter, except for the USB adapter itself, which is mounted in the rear of the machine.

At $400, that's an expensive accessory. I might stick to Apple's $69 iPad keyboard...
