Apple discounts iPhones, iPads and more in Lunar New Year Sale

As promised, Apple kicked its 'Red Friday' sales event off today in several Asian countries to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Unlike the recent Black Friday event it held here in the US, Apple is offering cash discounts on its products—not gift cards.

Also different is the fact that the Red Friday promotion includes price cuts on all current iPhone models and the new Retina iPad mini. Apple doesn't usually discount its handsets, as they are extremely popular and provide (by far) the largest margins...

CES 2014: Signal unveils ‘RP One’ wireless gaming controller for iOS 7

We were hoping that this year's CES would see the introduction of new iOS 7 gaming controllers, given how dismal the options are right now, and so far it hasn't disappointed. Yesterday, SteelSeries introduced its new Stratus controller, and today we're adding another option to the list.

What you see above is the 'RP One,' a Bluetooth gamepad with a traditional console-style layout made by Signal. As you can see, the controller is wireless—meaning you'll be able to use it with your iPad and any other compatible iOS devices—and it looks a lot like the popular Xbox controller...

CES 2014: Samsung preempts rumored iPad Pro with new 12-inch Galaxy tablets

It's day two of Consumer Electronics Show and we're expecting a flurry of new Apple-related product announcements throughout the day. Our continually updated CES 2014 coverage does not include yesterday's Samsung press event, but it's not too late to rectify the omission and tell you about some new tablets Apple's fierce competitor announced at the show: one new Galaxy NotePro and three new Galaxy TabPro devices (it pays to keep tabs on competition).

Available in up to 12.2-inch variants (here's why), all four tablets sport a new Windows 8-style home screen called Magazine UI and some nice multitasking improvements such as the ability to run up to four apps concurrently and resize their "windows".

And as an amusing ide-note, I'm also going to tell you about film director Michael Bay's disaster at Samsung's press event (bonus: video).

All that goodness is right after the jump...

Apple seeds iOS 7.1 beta 3 to developers: here is what’s new

Apple has released the third beta of iOS 7.1 to registered developers this morning. The update, which carries the build number 11d5127c, can be downloaded via Apple’s developer center.

Today’s release comes just under a month after the second beta, which brought about only a handful of changes like bringing the Touch ID and Passcode menu to the front of the Settings app...

Amazon updates Kindle app with Flashcards and several improvements

Amazon posted a major update for its iOS Kindle client this afternoon, bringing the app to version 4.1. The update includes a number of new features, like Flashcards for students, and several improvements for things like search, X-Ray and Dictionary.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes in 4.1 is the new Flashcards feature. It's only available for print replica textbooks, but students can use the feature to convert important terms from X-Ray, or their own notes, into flashcard sets for studying...

AT&T announces new sponsored data service for mobile devices

Today at CES, AT&T announced an interesting new service called Sponsored Data. The goal of the new service is essentially to offer a way for companies to pick up the tab for 4G data usage whenever specific products or services are being used.

How does it work? Well the carrier says that if the service is in effect, users will see a "sponsored" symbol in the status bar on the screen of their device. And this will indicate that all data charges are being redirected to the sponsoring company...

CES 2014: Withings unveils new ‘Aura’ smart sleep tracking system

Continuing on with our day one coverage of CES, we have Withings. The France-based consumer electronics company, which made a name for itself with its Wi-Fi body scale, announced a new connected device today called the Aura.

Withings calls the Aura a 'smart sleep system,' and says it's designed to both monitor and positively impact your sleep experience. It does this by leveraging a combination of sensors, ambient lighting, a little science and a mobile app...

CES 2014: Orbotix announces new ‘Sphero 2B’ connected toy

I hope you're ready to see a flurry of new products and accessories this week. The PR train known as the Consumer Electronics Show is now in full swing, and a number of companies have already made some big announcements.

The Colorado-based Orbotix got in on the early action. The makers of the popular Sphero ball unveiled its latest connected toy: the 'Sphero 2B.' This time it's a cylinder, instead of a ball, and it's twice as fast as the current Sphero...

CES 2014: SteelSeries announces new wireless gaming controller for iOS 7

During last week's 'Let's Talk iOS' podcast, we mentioned our disdain for the current crop of iOS 7 game controllers. The current selection consists of just two poorly-reviewed devices, and we said we hoped CES would change that.

And it looks like it's going to. SteelSeries, a popular maker of both desktop and mobile gaming peripherals, announced this morning that it's going to use the convention to launch the 'Stratus,' the first wireless controller made for iOS 7...

Day 12 of Apple’s 12 Days of Gifts event: The Rolling Stones EP

It's day 12, and what we assume to be the final day, of the big 12 Days of Gifts event. Apple has removed Mr. Crab and has posted a new item for download. Today's free gift is an EP (or extended play) from the English rock band The Rolling Stones.

The band really needs no introduction. These guys have been making music for over 50 years, and are ranked #8 on the "Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists" chart. They're legends, and widely considered one of the best rock bands that ever lived...

Day 11 of Apple’s 12 Days of Gifts: Illusion Labs’ Mr. Crab

We are nearing the end of the big 12 Days of Gifts event. We're now on day 11, and Apple has removed the free Sesame Street episode and posted a new item for download. Today’s free gift is the game Mr. Crab by Illusion Labs.

For those who haven't played it yet, Mr. Crab is a popular vertical arcade game for iOS that auto-scrolls from side to side as you jump your way through levels. It's a deadly combination of bright graphics and addictive gameplay...

BytaFont 2 is out with support for iOS 7, A7 devices

Adding to our list of popular jailbreak tweaks that have been updated for iOS 7 this morning is BytaFont. The developers announced yesterday that BytaFont 2 is now available in Cydia with support for iOS 7 and A7 devices.

This is great news for folks who like to really customize the UI on their iPhone or iPad, as BytaFont allows you to change the default font in iOS. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any of the old fonts are compatible with BF 2...
