Ever Wonder What it Takes to Jailbreak iOS? i0n1c’s Exploit Paper Reveals All

Stefan Esser, better known in the jailbreak community as i0n1c, was responsible for one of the most successful exploits in jailbreak history. While the iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak was certainly a collaborative effort, Esser's work was perhaps the most important.

No one likes to connect their iDevice to their computer every time they reboot, and i0n1c's untether meant they didn't have to. What made it so successful? The fact that the exploit continued to work through iOS 4.3.2 and 4.3.3 updates.

Have you ever wondered what goes into hacking the most secure mobile operating system? Esser tells all in this 97 page paper...

Apple Working on an iOS Scanner Application

Those folks over at 9to5Mac are at it again. After single handedly revealing the unannounced iOS 5 Nuance and Siri features, they have uncovered another secret project that Apple is working on.

Apparently, the Cupertino company is looking to release an application that would turn your iDevice into a digital scanner. Patent filings have suggested its interest in such an app, but 9to5Mac got the skinny from a source inside Apple...

iPhone Gaming Costs UK Businesses £800 Million, or $1.3 Billion a Year

We love studies here at iDB, especially when they result in entirely meaningless numbers that are almost guaranteed to get traction. Studies like this one, for example.

UK firm iBingo has questioned just 2,000 iPhone owners about their working habits, and in particular, how much gaming they do during working hours. Turns out, they all 'fessed up to playing games on their iPhones for around one hour a day. From there, iBingo took the numbers and ran with them, and have since made some bold claims based on those 2,000 users...

Testflight for iOS Gets an Update, Makes Beta Testing Even More Fun

Beta testing is a pretty big part of developing iOS apps these days. Once upon a time, a developer could throw an app out there and fix bugs as they went along, but with competition at its fiercest these days, that would be suicide for most. Most apps have so much competition, users will just move onto the next big thing, or find a replacement that works better. Bugs kill apps, and dead apps kill developers.

Beta testing is vital, and Testflight makes it super easy for both the tester and the developer alike...

Android App Downloads Could Outpace the App Store Eventually

Could Android app downloads soon outpace those of iOS apps from the App Store? According to research done by Ovum research (via CNET), all outlets currently offering Android apps will serve up approximately 8.1 billion downloads this year alone. This is opposed to an estimated 6 billion in the App Store.

It's important to keep in mind, however, that the sheer number of app downloads doesn't necessarily translate to a healthy or profitable ecosystem...

Adobe Flash Media Server Streams Flash Video to iDevices the Right Way

Last week, Adobe unveiled Flash Media Server 4.5 and Flash Access 3.0. With these products, content providers can finally stream Flash video to iOS on the fly without having to manually re-encode. While this doesn't necessarily equal Flash content on the iPhone and iPad, it does mean that providers have a faster and easier way to deliver video in a Flash wrapper to iDevices.

This doesn't mean that Flash-based games can run on iDevices, only video...

Dropbox Gets an iOS-Optimized Web App Update with Sharing and Search

File syncing supremo Dropbox has given its mobile web app a lick of paint, thanks to a little help from one of the team's interns. The new web interface has more than a little bit of iOS about it, and it obviously works fine with all mobile platforms, such as, Android and Windows Phone 7.

The first update to the web app in around three years has some new features added to the mix, bringing search functionality and sharing options that don't currently exist in the App Store app...

Google Finally Releases a Blogger App for iOS

It's only fitting that one of the oldest blogging platforms currently in existence just got its own iOS app. Google has announced Blogger for the iPhone and iPad.

Blogger itself recently underwent a huge revamp, and the iOS app takes obvious cues from the platform's new design. Mainly, you get to look at that ugly orange color...

Apple Bullies “iCloud Communications” Out of Its Name and Web Site

It seems that Apple's iCloud has won another battle – a battle over its own name. Ars Technica reports that iCloud Communications has dropped its legal battle over trademark infringement, with the company changing its name to PhoenixSoft/Clear Digital Communications.

The move comes after Apple's crack team of rabid lawyers flexed their collective muscles, leaving the Phoenix-based company no option but to change its trading name. The company's website, geticloud.com, also appears to have disappeared as part of the deal...
