Apple Ditching the UDID for iDevices in iOS 5

A subtle change has been noticed in the iOS 5 beta. Apparently, Apple is changing the way that developers can access an iDevice's unique identifier number. For those unfamiliar with the concept, a 'UDID' allows developers to identify app users on a specific, device by device basis.

In iOS 5, Apple is no longer allowing developers access to an iDevice's UDID, but instead allowing developers to create app-specific UDIDs. This basically means that mobile ad and game networks won't have access to your device's specific number for tracking and inventory, which is the means that these systems have always worked off of in the past.

What’s New in iOS 5 Beta 6

As most of you know already, Apple released iOS 5 Beta 6 to developers earlier today. While we've been able to confirm that the new software is jailbreak-safe, we haven't been able to uncover any major, new features.

Much like its predecessor, Beta 6 seems to be full of minimal enhancements and last minute bug fixes as Apple prepares for an imminent public release. Regardless, the new firmware still has a huge change log. And you can read through it yourself after the break...

Update: iOS 5 Beta 6 is Not Jailbreak Safe

Apple seeded beta number 6 of iOS 5 to developers today. And while some folks are rushing out to download the new software, others are waiting for word on if and when it will be jailbroken.

With previous iOS 5 releases, we've had to wait for the jailbreak community to update tools like RedSn0w and Sn0wBreeze to be compatible with the new firmware...

Sn0wBreeze 2.8 Beta 5 has been released by iH8snow for Windows users. This version jailbreaks iOS 5 Beta 5, and also includes a few handy features along the way.

More Evidence of New Voice Command Feature Found in iOS 5

When it comes to iOS 5, Apple has some serious tricks up its sleeve. Though killer features like voice-to-text and Assistant weren't mentioned in Apple's WWDC keynote on the new firmware, they're there.

From what we know so far, the voice-to-text implementation is pretty straightforward. It appears to be system-wide and powered by Nuance technology. The Assistant feature on the other hand, has been a bit of a mystery. Until now...

Nevermind, Apple Won’t Be Holding a Media Event September 7th

Earlier today, a report came in regarding the date as to when Apple would hold its annual fall media event. Japanese site Kodawarisan claimed that Apple will be holding the media event as soon as September 7th.

While Apple has announced next generation iPods in September for the past three years, a new report has completely debunked the rumor of an Apple event on September 7th...

Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 5 With RedSn0w

As usual, that didn't take long. Hot of the heels of the Beta 5 release of iOS 5, the iPhone Dev Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.8b5, which, of course, allows you to jailbreak Apple's bleeding edge firmware.

Per the norm, this is a tethered jailbreak, meaning you'll have to be near a computer to perform a tethered boot if you have to restart your device for any reason.

This latest version of RedSn0w is available for both Mac and Windows users. Check inside for more details...

iOS 5’s Voice-to-Text Feature Finally Revealed

In the weeks building up to this year's WWDC, there was a lot of speculation that Apple and Nuance were planning a major partnership to bring system-wide voice-to-text to iOS 5. The 2 companies were expected to make a big announcement at the Summer event.

But the developer's conference came and went with no mention of the new feature. Then we started to see code trickle in. Found deep inside Apple's new firmware, the evidence suggested that the company was still working on bringing voice-to-text to its customers this Fall.

Now we don't just have bits of code, we have actual proof. Hit the jump for the full screenshot...
