iOS 10

Why you should wait until Luca Todesco’s iOS 10 jailbreak is out of beta before using it

I get asked every day whether or not someone should jailbreak their iOS 10 device right now with Luca Todesco’s beta tool or continue to wait a little longer for a more stable jailbreak release.

In this post, I hope to tackle some of the confusion regarding the tool and help to answer some ongoing questions of whether or not you should jailbreak just yet. Of course, if you don’t have the time to read, the short answer is: no.

Pokémon Go is dead, long live Pokémon Go!

There is no debate that a large contingent on the internet has been holding out for less Pokémon Go news in 2017, but it is equally clear that this sentiment will not be echoed by the people at Niantic. No matter the side of the fence you are on, the fact that Pokemon Go is hands down one of the most successful apps in the history of the App Store (breaking first-week download and revenue records) is a big deal, and the augmented reality laced game will continue to rake in millions of users and dollars in the year ahead. It’s not all rosy though, as the daily player count is continuously pointing south and engagement data crumbling.

As much as this is Niantic’s battle to fight, Apple too has a vested interest in the preservation of Pokemon Go’s winning streak and will want to benefit financially from the game throughout the current fiscal year. The question both business entities therefore are going to have to find answers to is what’s next for Pokémon Go strategically, and what is Apple’s role in facilitating Niantic’s continued success with the app? Not so much content wise but rather in terms of product strategy, I have sized up a few moves that Niantic, The Pokémon Company and Apple could have up their sleeves over the next 12 months.

Ryan Petrich launches new Activator, FlipSwitch, and FlipControlCenter betas with preliminary iOS 10 support

While the jailbreak for iOS 10.1.1 is currently in beta and only supports a certain subset of devices, jailbreak developers are still ramping up for a public jailbreak by releasing new tweaks geared toward iOS 10 and updating their latest jailbreak tweaks for support.

Ryan Petrich is the latest to join that group after having released updated versions of Activator, FlipSwitch, and FlipControlCenter in his beta repository with preliminary iOS 10 support.

How to quickly fix mispronounced Siri queries

You may be aware that there is already a feature in iOS that sort of lets you type in your questions to Siri instead of using voice commands. It's quite handy for those situations when talking aloud isn't an option or Siri fails to recognize repeatedly what you said. Starting with iOS 10, Siri includes a “Maybe You Said” feature.

Taking advantage of machine learning and artificial intelligence, it suggests corrections for mispronunciations or incorrectly recognized queries. In this post, you'll learn how to leverage this feature to avoid having to manually correct any mispronounced words.

iOS 10.2 jailbreak could come via YaluX update

The creator of the iOS 10.1.x jailbreak YaluX has announced that he intends to update the tool, currently in beta, to add support for iOS 10.2. Luca Todesco tweeted that his solution for the instability of the early builds of his tool has tangentially allowed for compatibility with the most recent firmware, news which will no doubt delight many in the jailbreak community who are trapped on iOS 10.2, and who have been lamenting the death of the jailbreak on currently signed firmwares.

New betas of iOS 10.2.1, macOS Sierra 10.12.3, watchOS 3.1.3 and tvOS 10.1.1 now available

Apple today released new OS betas to its registered developers. iOS 10.2.1 beta 3 (build 14D23), macOS Sierra 10.12.3 beta 3 (build 16D25a), watchOS 3.1.3 beta 2 (build 14S959) and tvOS 10.1.1 beta 2 (build 14U711) are now available for testing to the members of Apple Developer Program.

The latest builds can be installed over-the-air via the Software Update mechanism on devices that have an appropriate configuration profile installed on them.

The new builds have arrived nearly three weeks after a second beta of iOS 10.2.1 and macOS Sierra 10.12.3 released to registered developers.

Littlemoji shrinks the large Emojis in the Messages app on iOS 10

Starting with iOS 10, Apple has super-sized all of the Emojis that you send and receive via iMessage whenever they’re used without any complementary text.

Because the Emoji experience on iOS 10 feels a lot more like Facebook Messenger’s sticker system now and not everyone’s on board with it, a new free jailbreak tweak called Littlemoji can be used to return them back to their pre-iOS 10 size.

TSSChecker now correctly supports iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

It seems tihmstar has been busy putting right the flaws in his suite of tools; just one week after he revealed that a bug in his .shsh2 saving tool TSSChecker had led to all iPhone 7(+) blobs saved with it being invalid, a new update restores the ability to correctly save blobs on Apple's most recent flagship device.

Yalu + mach_portal now supports TSMC models: still unstable

Luca Todesco's beta jailbreak for iOS 10.1.x, dubbed YaluX or Yalu + mach_portal, slightly broadened its device support list recently by adding the iPhone SE (TSMC chip version) and iPhone 6s(+) (TSMC chip version) to the club. Bear in mind, we do not yet recommend the tool to the average user, and Todesco himself has spoken of the possible difficulties brought about by too many people making use of the tool in its unfinished state.

iOS 10 adoption rate now at 76%

Apple on Thursday updated its Developer App Store Support page to show that the iOS 10 adoption rate is now at 76%. This means that 76% of all active devices are now running iOS 10.0 or higher, a nice jump since late November when the adoption rate was at 63%.

Also worth noting is that 18% of current active devices are running iOS 9, and just 6% of devices are on iOS 8 or lower. That's a drop for both numbers since the last report, which showed 29% of devices running on iOS 9 and some 8% running on an earlier version of iOS.

NoTodayView disables the Spotlight widget page on the Home and Lock screens

NoTodayView is a new free jailbreak tweak for iOS 10 devices that can disable the Spotlight widget page on both the Home screen and Lock screen, which depending on how you use your device, can be very useful.

While most people like to use the Spotlight and widget page system that comes stock, it gets in the way when you try to use some other Home screen-modifying jailbreak tweaks like Mobius, which allow you to scroll infinitely through all of your Home screen pages and folders without coming to any dead-ends.

AntennaGIFDL lets you download GIFs from the Antenna Reddit client app

If you prefer the Antenna Reddit client over the default app from the service itself, then you’re probably familiar with the fact that it lacks a way to download animated GIF images when viewing them from the app.

A new free jailbreak tweak called AntennaGIFDL fixes that by building in a way to download animated GIF images from the Antenna app straight to your device’s Camera Roll.
