Apple prompting users to make their Apple ID accounts more secure

Have you recently received a notification on one of your iOS devices prompting you to confirm your Apple ID password? If so, you're not alone. Users have been flocking to Apple's support forums to report the suspicious popup.

No, it's not a phishing scam. Apple is trying to beef up its security. TheNextWeb is reporting that over the past 24 hours, the company has started prompting iOS device owners to make their accounts more secure...

iTunes 11 to include iOS 6 support and deeper iCloud integration

9to5Mac is reporting tonight that it has learned some details regarding the next major iteration of Apple's media management software, iTunes 11. Apparently Apple has been working on it for months now, and has recently seeded an internal beta.

According to the report, the iTunes update will feature a host of new additions including support for iOS 6...

iTunes is the target of a new lawsuit

Apple is today finding itself on the wrong end of another lawsuit, with iTunes this time feeling the full force of America's somewhat broken patent system. As is the done thing these days, someone claiming to own a patent that may be infringed upon by a large company is seeking damages for said infringement.

According to a report in Computer World, a man named Benjamin Grobler believes that iTunes, along with Sony's PlayStation Network, infringes upon a patent he owns which covers a "data vending system."

This system allows the central hosting of apps, movies or music, with information on what a customer has already purchased already also being part of the system. Sound familiar? Yup, that's iTunes in the Cloud, then...

iTunes updated to version 10.6.1

iTunes has been updated to version 10.6.1, bringing a bunch of bug fixes:

Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view, and syncing photos to devices. Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes. Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle. Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

As far as I can tell, this iTunes update is jailbreak-safe.

CBS chief (again) explains Steve Jobs didn’t want to pay a dime for iTunes deal

Back in November, CBS President and CEO Les Moonves confirmed in a conference call with Wall Street analysts that Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs approached the studio with a subscription-based iTunes content deal. It had been rumored at the time that Apple was looking for premium content partnerships to accompany a rumored Apple-branded television set, dubbed by the press the iTV.

Moonves was quoted as saying that CBS had decided against joining the initiative because it was based on an ad split. Yesterday, the executive shed more light on the matter. Confirming the original report, Moonves (portrayed as the man who said "no" to Steve Jobs) has revealed that Jobs actually didn't want to pay a dime for CBS content that the likes of Netflix spend hundreds of millions of dollars to license...

Have you recently been having problems with your Apple TV not downloading iTunes content? Well if so, you're not alone. TheNextWeb is reporting that Apple has just confirmed that it is experiencing some issues with its iTunes service.

The problem is accompanied by an error message that reads "this item cannot be downloaded on this network, you must be connected to a Wi-Fi network," and is preventing folks from downloading or streaming content to their Apple TVs...

How 1080p content in iTunes compares to Blu-ray

iTunes 1080p movie on the left, Blu-ray movie on the right

The new iPad and the new Apple TV have one thing in common — full HD video. Both products recently received significant hardware upgrades to allow them to playback 1080p content. Heck, the new iPad can even capture its own hi-def videos.

But is full HD video really worth the upgrade? Ars Technica published a report this morning aiming to answer that very question. The site takes a look at the difference between iTunes files encoded in 720p and 1080p. And 1080p versus Blu-ray...

How to install iPhoto on your first generation iPad

When Apple announced iPhoto for iOS at the press event for the new iPad, the company chose not to make the app compatible for the first generation device, leaving many customers out in the cold.

It is of course true that many original iPad owners may be looking to upgrade this year, but for those are still happy with their two-year-old devices, there is light at the end of the tunnel, with a relatively simple little hack allowing iPhoto to be installed on their devices. As is always the case though, there is a downside to proceedings.

For those that just want to forge ahead regardless, here's what you'll need to do...

Can’t update your iPhone or iPad over the air or using iTunes? We have a fix

I've been trying to update my iPad over the air to iOS 5.1 ever since it was released this last Wednesday. Unfortunately, it kept throwing an error saying "Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update."

At first, I assumed that Apple's servers were being slammed, but it's now been two days and I still couldn't update, constantly getting this "unable to check for update" error.

So I decided to plug my iPad in to update it the good old way, you know, using iTunes. But iTunes was not very cooperating either as it kept throwing this error: "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad. The network connection could not be established."

After a bit of googling, I found the solution to my problem:

Is the BBC planning to go head-to-head with iTunes?

Content is king in the online media world, and while Apple currently has a lock on music and video distribution via iTunes, it seems one of the planet's oldest media companies may be set to mount a challenge.

The BBC, according to reports, is currently working on something it dubs "Project Barcelona" which, should it come to fruition, could see a huge amount of BBC content find its way to users via a download-to-own business model.

Currently, the BBC only allows streams content via its own iPlayer apps, but Project Barcelona would see an iTunes-like model, where viewers would pay a fee to keep a digital version of their favorite shows...

Apple releases iTunes 10.6

While we've already heard about Apple's new iPad and Apple TV, a few more things are trickling out after the event that just wrapped up in California. Along with iOS 5.1 and the new iPhoto for iPad, Apple will also launch iTunes 10.6 this afternoon.

There's no word on new features, but it will of course feature support for iOS 5.1...

Apple introduces new ‘Catalogs’ category to App Store

Apple has just introduced a new category labeled 'Catalogs' to the App Store this evening. The new introduction is ahead of Apple's media event tomorrow, where the Cupertino-based company is rumored to announce the iPad 3 and third-generation Apple TV.

The new category has yet to fully roll out to the App Store. Currently, it has apps like Catalog Spree, MTG Merchant, and SkyMall listed under it, but shows no results when viewing the category page. Catalogs may or may not have have some role in Apple's media event taking place tomorrow...
