Apple introduces new ‘Catalogs’ category to App Store

Apple has just introduced a new category labeled ‘Catalogs’ to the App Store this evening. The new introduction is ahead of Apple’s media event tomorrow, where the Cupertino-based company is rumored to announce the iPad 3 and third-generation Apple TV.

The new category has yet to fully roll out to the App Store. Currently, it has apps like Catalog Spree, MTG Merchant, and SkyMall listed under it, but shows no results when viewing the category page. Catalogs may or may not have have some role in Apple’s media event taking place tomorrow…

MacRumors asked the CEO of Catalog Spree about the new category, and he seems to think it may be related to tomorrow’s event:

Adding an app category is not something that Apple does lightly and we believe Apple’s decision reflects the importance of this usecase in the Apple App Store ecosystem.

We’re not exactly sure what roll the Catalogs category would play in tomorrow’s event, but we’re sure to learn more soon. Perhaps linked to the Retina display somehow?

Apple also rolled out another App Store update this evening, introducing an updated interface for the iPad version.

We’ll be covering Apple’s media event throughout tomorrow, but in the meantime, you can read our predictions for the event.
