Some new iMacs say ‘Assembled in the USA’

Apple has taken a lot of criticism over the years for outsourcing the manufacturing of its products to China and other countries. They're not the only one that does this — thousands do — but because of their size and influence, they always get singled out.

With this in mind, it's interesting to hear that a number of new iMac buyers are reporting that their machines have the words "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in USA" etched into the back of them. Is Apple manufacturing in the US now?

Redesigned iMacs coming Friday, 27-incher shipping in December

Your dream desktop machine is around the corner. The thinner, redesigned all-in-one iMac lineup introduced last month will be available starting this Friday, November 30, Apple confirmed today. The 21-inch model comes in two flavors, with upgrade options including a faster Core i7 chip and a Fusion Drive. The top-of-the-line 27-incher will ship next month and includes up to a 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.6 GHz and Nvidia's GeForce GTX 675MX graphics. The 21.5-inch model will be available through the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. The 27-inch iMac will be available for order through the Apple Online Store and will begin shipping in December...

Suppliers profit up 29% on new Apple product launches

That's the word today from one observer who says Apple suppliers are enjoying a 29 percent profit boost due to "blockbuster new products" recently released. Apple's key suppliers saw their profits increase dramatically compared to the usual (and paltry) two percent growth and much higher than September's tepid one percent increase, Wall Street analyst Brian White told investors Thursday. Should tablets be considered computers? While experts debate the tech equivalent of how many angels dance on the head of a pin, consumers are voting with their wallets. Tablets sales increased nearly 50 percent during the third quarter while computer purchases are on life support.

Today's numbers from IDC reflect a continuing trend away from PCs and toward mobile devices. Globally, 27.7 million tablets were sold during the third-quarter. This follows last month's numbers which showed PC sales declined 8.6 percent to 87.7 million during the same period...

Apple is no stranger to abandoning features it thinks are heading for the graveyard of technology. I guess you could say the company invented it. The new iMac without a built-in optical drive is the perfect epitome of such forward-thinking that, however, isn't without its pitfalls.

With the revamped all-in-one desktop, club Cupertino risks alienating the old-fashioned types by inconveniencing their daily computing, at least until the rest of the industry catches up. Then again, every Apple customer has always been an early adopter in every sense of the word.

The question is, will other makers follow suit and remove rotating medias from their products? More importantly, what exactly does the new iMac tell us about a Tim Cook Apple?

Apple’s Schiller on new iMacs without an optical drive, iPad mini value

Apple announces new slimmer iMac with fusion drive, 8lbs lighter

Apple announced an amazing looking new iMac that's incredibly thinner than the previous generation version.

The new iMac use a new build process called fricton stir welding, where the actual molecules of the aluminum are merged together to make a single piece. Apple also laminated the display directly to the glass to yield a 45% thinner display system.

The optical drive is also removed for added space savings. The new iMacs will come in both 21.5" and 27" versions...

The iMac, Apple's ultimate all-in-one desktop, could be refreshed alongside the next iPhone five days from today, or perhaps in October alongside a rumored smaller iPad or maybe even later - but quite possibly by Christmas the latest.

Regardless of a launch date, new iMacs are said to be "imminent", if you believe Fox News reporter Clayton Morris who issued a report based on unnamed sources that signified Apple's next-generation iMac lineup is ready to go. Be that as it may, I'm wondering whether Apple plans to throw in an all-new Retina iMac model to make things a tad more interesting...
