Samsung reportedly working on Gear S2 smartwatch companion app for iPhone

Samsung is reportedly working on its very first iOS app, called Gear Manager, that will permit iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners to use the South Korean firm's latest Gear S2 lineup of smartwatches, SamMobile learned from its sources last week.

While the Gear S2 works with all Android smartphones, not just the ones made by Samsung, it doesn't play well with iOS. Like Apple's own Watch companion app, the Gear Manager is said to include features to set up and customize the device for use.

Samsung sells just 50,000 Galaxy Gear watches in first two months [update]

In September, Samsung launched a line of Galaxy Gear smartwatches. The move appeared to be little more than a response to rumors that Apple and other tech companies were working on similar products, and an effort to be "first" to market.

But going first in unknown territory doesn't always work in your favor, and it looks like the Galaxy Gear supports that theory. According to a new report, Samsung has sold just 50,000 smartwatches since it launched them nearly 3 months ago...

New Galaxy Gear ads attempt to make the case for smartwatches

Samsung may have beaten Apple to the smartwatch punch, but poor reviews across the board have quickly dampened consumer enthusiasm for the $299 product. ArsTechnica, for example, noted the device "has sacrificed substance for the sake of timing". That's not stopping Samsung from advertising the Galaxy Gear as its next big thing, however.

Is this Samsung’s new smartwatch?

It appears that Samsung is going to beat Apple to the wearable tech space this week. The company has an 'Unpacked' media event scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, where it's widely presumed to unveil a new smartwatch.

Now, this category is still fairly new, so we really don't know what to expect to see on Wednesday. But if these images from VentureBeat are legitimate, Samsung's Galaxy watch will feature a 3-inch display and a chunky design...

Samsung to unveil Galaxy Gear smartwatch on September 4

Perhaps looking to spoil Apple's September 10 iPhone 5S/5C party, Samsung of South Korea is reportedly set to make a major wearables-focused announcement six days ahead of Apple's press conference. The South Korean conglomerate last week sent out invites for its August 4 Unpacked 2013 Episode 2 event to launch the Galaxy Note III.

As it turns out, the firm may have another surprise up its sleeve come August 4: a Galaxy-branded smartwatch designed to act as a companion device for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets...
