Apple files for new iPad trademark in China

It's been a busy couple of weeks for Apple in China. First there was Tim Cook's visit, which involved meetings with government officials and China Mobile chairman Xi Guohua. Then there was the cellular iPad and iPad mini launch on Friday.

And now we know that Apple's legal team applied for a new iPad trademark in China last week. They submitted the filing, which covers the likeness of the best-selling tablet, to the country's Patent and Trademark Office on Friday...

Apple to open R&D facility in Shanghai this summer

Earlier this week, we passed along a report claiming that Apple was looking to open up a new research and development center in Beijing. The news made sense, considering that on Tim Cook's recent visit to China, he was seen talking with high level government officials.

But according to a new report, which cites people familiar with the project, the R&D facility is actually going up in Shanghai. The campus, which Apple is expected to announce later this year, will feature three 6-story buildings, with over 100,000 square feet of space...

Cellular iPads hit China: iPad mini already on a 2-week backlog

Amid all the negativity surrounding speculation of weaker than expected demand for the iPhone 5 (and now the full-size iPad) comes a glimpse of hope as buyers in China seem to be picking up their cellular iPads at a rapid clip. In fact, iPads are seeing shipping delays on the launch day in this massive market.

As promised, on Friday cellular versions of the full-size 9.7-inch iPad and 7.9-inch iPad mini went on sale in China. Immediately following the launch, however, Apple's online store in China is quoting a two-week delay for new online orders for both the Wi-Fi-only and cellular versions of the mini tablet...

He met with China Mobile, the world's largest carrier with 700 million subscribers, to discuss that long-sought iPhone deal, visited Apple stores and attended meetings in Beijing with officials.

But there was one more thing on Cook's agenda as a new report out Tuesday has it that Cook told government officials that his company plans to establish a research and development center in Beijing, home to Asia's largest Apple Store...

Cellular version of new iPad and iPad mini to go on sale in China on January 18

Back in December, Apple rolled out the Wi-Fi only versions of both the 4th generation iPad and new iPad mini in China. The Cellular version was missing from the launch, however, and there was no word when it would land.

Then last week, Tim Cook confirmed that carrier-flavored versions of the two tablets would be available in the country in late January. And today, Apple delivers on that promise, announcing an official arrival date of January 18...

With that, comes a report today that Apple has introduced a new interest-free installment payment option to its web store in China as a way of enticing potential customers that may not have enough cash on-hand...

Amid swirling iPhone mini rumors, Tim Cook meets China’s high-level officials

Apple CEO Tim Cook is fast becoming a frequent visitor to China. China's Ministry of Industry and Information announced Cook met with the agency's Miao Wei.

The subject of talk: Apple's business goals for China, as well as global communications. Since a trip to China in March 2012, the number of Apple Stores there have increased to 11 from 6...

Rumor: larger, inexpensive iPhones heading to emerging markets in late-2013

One analyst earlier in the week noted Apple will simply have to recognize the untapped segment of inexpensive prepaid handsets, an area that could boost it beyond its chief rival Samsung.

Conveniently enough, now comes word that such a device is in the works and could be released to emerging markets in the second half of this year.

But here's the kicker: the so-called iPhone mini, as the media affectionately dubbed it, is anything but small. According to a rumor out of Asia, the device has a new design and larger display and is specifically being targeted at China and other emerging markets, where Apple's market share has been declining amid the onslaught of inexpensive Androids and local brands...
