TinyUmbrella Updated for iOS 5 Beta 1

A quick note for jailbreakers out there, TinyUmbrella has been updated to bring support for the iOS 5 beta 1. TinyUmbrella's developer, Notcom, also added a new, nifty alert to remind users to "Request SHSH from Cydia" and "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" as soon as possible.

Make sure you don't use TinyUmbrella to update to iOS 5 while preserving your baseband as the "fixrecovery" feature hasn't been updated yet...

FaceTime to Go 3G in iOS 5, Carrier-Pending of Course

I'm sure most of you have seen the T-Mobile commercials that poke fun at the iPhone 4's inability to make video calls outside of a Wi-Fi area. The tagline at the end of the ads is always "Introducing the new T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, video chat without needing Wi-Fi."

Although the commercials don't account for services like Skype or jailbreakers using the My3G utility, they are otherwise spot-on. Apple's popular FaceTime video chat service has been restricted to Wi-Fi usage since its inception last year, but that could all change in iOS 5...

Nuance Voice Integration Not Currently in iOS 5, But There’s Still Hope

Apple unveiled a truckload of iOS 5 features at WWDC on Monday, but one major thing was missing: Nuance voice integration. There was a strong series of rumors leading right up to the keynote that claimed iOS 5 would boast huge improvements in voice integration.

Unfortunately, no voice-related features were previewed during Monday's keynote, and the first iOS 5 developer beta has no voice additions to speak of.

Has Apple abandoned their partnership with Nuance in iOS? Or will we still see deeper voice integration in iOS 5 before it's released to the public in the next few months?

Everyone's dying to get their hands on the first beta of iOS 5 and try out all of its terrific new features, but unless you're signed up to the $99 per year Apple developer program, you'll have to wait until later this year to get your hands on the public release. That is, until now!

A Gizmodo reader has discovered a "backdoor" that allows you to install iOS 5 on the iPhone and enjoy all of its features without having to register its UDID with Apple first...

iOS 5 Will Work on the iPhone 3GS

Despite concerns, the iPhone 3GS will be supported in iOS 5. This means that 3GS owners will be able to download and install Apple's next version of iOS when it goes live for the public this fall.

Although most parts of iOS 5 will work on the 3GS, certain features will not. This includes parts of the new Camera app. Overall, the iPhone 3GS works pretty well with the iOS 5 developer beta that people have already been testing...

MobileNotifier Beta5 Released: SMS Quick Reply, Enhanced Dashboard, Bug Fixes

In a surprising move, Peter Hajas has released his last version of the popular iOS notifications jailbreak replacement, MobileNotifier. We covered another blog post of Peter's yesterday, in which he declared that he was leaving as the head of the development team for MobileNotifier.

Right after we reviewed Beta4, MobileNotifier Beta5 "Ecstatic Eggo" has now been released in Cydia. And Peter is calling Beta5 the most "revolutionary release since the project's inception."

MobileNotifier Beta4: iOS Notifications the Right Way

Notifications in iOS have always sucked. Let's be honest, whether you've grown to actually like and/or tolerate Apple's system for push notifications on the iPhone, you still have to look at other platforms like Android and Palm OS and scratch your head.

Apple got one thing right: making sure you see your notifications in iOS. The problem is that there is no method of queuing, collecting, or saving notifications. When something gets pushed from an app, you have to deal with it right away.

Luckily, we have the jailbreak community to thank for several wonderful alternatives to the stock system of notifications in iOS. My favorite is called MobileNotifier. Let's take a closer look...

Safari “Reading List” in Mac OS X Lion Will Wirelessly Sync Bookmarks with iOS Devices

Apple's next version of their desktop operating system, Mac OS X Lion, is nearing the final stages of developer beta testing. It is suspected that Apple will release the new OS to Mac users this summer.

More and more features are being uncovered in the developer builds of OS X Lion, and a recent finding points to a cloud-synced bookmark feature in Apple's browser, Safari. The new "Reading List" feature in OS X Lion will allow users to wirelessly sync their bookmarked webpages with iOS devices.

This would allow you to easily take your bookmarked pages with you on the go...

iPhone 3GS Running Untethered Jailbreak on iOS 4.3.1 with Sn0wbreeze Beta [Video]

The Windows jailbreak tool, Sn0wbreeze, was recently updated to perform a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.1. We told you about the newest beta release a couple days ago, and many of you have successfully been able to jailbreak your iPhone on 4.3.1.

The biggest downer with the current Sn0wbreeze beta is that it's a tethered jailbreak, and we've recommended holding off on iOS 4.3.1 until an untethered solution is released from the Dev Team.

To our surprise, an iDB reader sent us a video of his iPhone 3GS running an untethered jailbreak after using the latest Sn0wbreeze 2.4b1...
