Only the GSM iPhone 4S Can Be Unlocked

Following the news earlier that the iPhone 4S won't be available as an unlocked device until November, it's also worth noting that only customers on GSM carriers will be able to unlock the 4S.

Apple touted the iPhone 4S as a "world phone" capable of running on both GSM and CDMA networks, but as usual there seems to be more involved when it comes to the fine print. Unfortunately, an unlocked iPhone 4S will only work on GSM networks...

AT&T Extends Return Policy Due to 4S Announcement

Good news for folks who pulled the trigger a little too early on buying an iPhone with AT&T in the last 60 days. ModMyi announced this morning that the carrier will be extending its 30-day return policy for recent iPhone purchasers.

While the initial report was based on a purported internal carrier document, iDB was able to confirm the news with AT&T via a customer service representative. Hit the jump for a full rundown of the limited-time return program...

How to See if You’re Eligible for an iPhone Upgrade

You've heard that a new iPhone is coming out, and you want to see if you're eligible for an upgrade with your carrier. For those that don't buy off contract, early upgrade fees can be extremely expensive for smartphones like the iPhone.

There's actually a really easy way to check your upgrade eligibility from your iPhone on AT&T. Verizon lets customers check eligibility from its website. Here's how to see if you're eligible for an iPhone upgrade...

If Only the iPhone 4S is Expected Next Week, What’s With All of These Cases?

Apple's iPhone event is just a few days away, and after months of rumors, we're still unsure of what to expect. Since March, there has been speculation that the Cupertino company would be unveiling multiple handsets this year.

Over the last few weeks, the two-phone theory has largely dropped out of the conversation. A majority of the tech world now seems to think that we'll only see one iPhone model next week: the 4S. But what about all of these iPhone 5 cases still floating around?

AT&T Already Throttling Data Speeds

As noted by Reddit user skelatwork, AT&T has already begun throttling data speeds for its wireless customers. We told you months ago that AT&T was going to implement data throttling this October, and it seems that the first messages have already been sent.

AT&T is only throttling the top 5% of data customers, but what qualifies for reaching such a threshold has still not been clarified.

China Unicom Suggests Next iPhone Will Support HDSPA+ “4G” Technology

With Apple's iPhone event just 5 days away, everyone is trying to get in their last minute predictions. While it seems like pundits agree on most of the device's features, there is one detail that still remains a mystery — data connectivity.

Even though evidence surfaced last month that Apple was testing LTE-capable devices, it doesn't seem likely that the upcoming smartphone will house the technology. But that doesn't mean that the next iPhone won't be "4G..."

AT&T CEO: iPhone Competition Among Carriers is “Overblown”

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson recently responded to the rumor that Sprint would be getting the iPhone next month. During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Stephenson described the effect of carriers adding the iPhone as being "always overblown" by the media.

AT&T feels that the iPhone's availability on more carriers does nothing, and will continue to do nothing, to the company's relevancy among its competition. Stephenson said that, "I’m very confident that we’ll do very well with” the new iPhone...

Will the Next Gen iPhone Launch on October 13th?

With Apple expected to hold its next iPhone announcement on October 4th, we're all wondering when we'll be able to get our hands on the iPhone 5/iPhone 4S. We can look back at history and guess, but 2011 has proved to be an entirely different roadmap for Apple. Anything could happen.

The first real hint at the next generation iPhone release date may have just been dropped, thanks to AT&T's early upgrade policy...

Verizon CEO Defends AT&T/T-Mobile Merger

If there's one thing I didn't expect to hear today, it's Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam give his approval to the AT&T/T-Mobile merger initiated earlier this year.

Of course, the potential business deal has been under scrutiny by the US Government, but AT&T intends to fight all the way to make the deal go through. Their argument? AT&T itself isn't happy with its network, and the company needs T-Mobile's network to increase its reliability. Surprisingly, Verizon agrees with that...

iPhone 4S Cases Already Arriving at AT&T Retail Stores [Updated]

BGR is reporting that they have obtained images of some next-generation iPhone cases. But these aren't the same iPhone 5 cases we've seen popping up all over Asia for the past month. They are actually for the iPhone 4S.

The tech blog received the images from a source within AT&T's retail chain. The tipster claims they are starting to see accessories come in for the Apple's new smartphone. The proof is in the pictures, as the new cases don't appear to be for the current model...

White iPhone 4S Pops Up in AT&T’s Retail Software

Hold on to your hats folks, Engadget just dropped a bombshell. The tech blog just published a photo it received from a tipster that appears to be of a screen from AT&T's internal retail software.

The screenshot looks like it was taken from the carrier's trouble ticket system, a place where reps can pass issues on to tech support. What's so interesting about the pic? It seemingly outs a new Apple device — the iPhone 4S...

AT&T to Start Rolling Out its LTE Network this Weekend

After several months of talking about it, AT&T finally seems ready to put up or shut up. On Sunday, the carrier plans on lighting up its new 4G LTE service in 5 major U.S. cities. The news does come with several asterisks though.

One, it's about a year late to the party. Verizon's had a live LTE network since last December. Two, the launch is tiny compared to Verizon's 39-city rollout. And three, there's not even a compatible smartphone available (yet)...
