Week Calendar for iPhone goes free for two days

We recently published a list of our favorite calendar apps for the iPad. After the list was published, some of our readers suggested that Week Calendar was worthy of the “Best Of” nomenclature, to which we agreed and updated the list accordingly.

The very next day, the app’s developer sent me an email to let me know that the iPhone version of Week Calendar is going to be free for a special promotion on July 15 and 16 only. If you haven’t already, be sure to grab this amazing app on the iPhone before it goes back up to full price…

Searchr is like Spotlight on steroids

Spotlight on iOS is my savior. When I want to find an app and don’t remember which folder I’ve stored it in, I simply pull down on my Home screen to access the Spotlight search bar and type in what I’m looking for.

Searchr is a search function for the iPhone that allows you to find content you are looking for, just like Spotlight. However, this app also includes a few additional features that let you perform a variety of actions without having to switch to another app…

PayPal updated with loyalty card support, faster logins and more

PayPal pushed out an update to its iOS client last night, bringing the app to version 5.5. The update brings about the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, but it also adds a big new feature: support for loyalty cards.

This means PayPal users will be able to carry virtual versions of their favorite loyalty cards—such as Starbucks, CVS, and several other retailers—within the app, essentially making it a one-stop shop for payments and checkins...

Apple says iOS 7 is now installed on 90% of compatible devices

Apple has updated its App Store support page for developers this week to reflect new information regarding iOS 7 adoption. According to the company’s usage data, the latest versions of its OS are running on 90% of iOS devices accessing the App Store.

That’s just a small jump from Apple's report a few months ago, where it claimed iOS 7 adoption had reached 87% of compatible devices. But it's still impressive given what the adoption rate looks like for competitors, and how hard it is to move the needle...

Shazam for iOS updated with in-app track playback via Rdio

Shazam has updated its free and Encore iOS apps, bringing them both to version 7.7.0. The update brings about a new feature to both clients that allows users to play back recognized songs in-app, courtesy of Rdio.

While users have long been able to do this—play recognized tracks through Rdio—past functionality required them to switch out of Shazam and into Rdio. They can now playback [full] songs without switching apps...

5 calculator apps Apple featured in App Store’s Productivity Monday section

Dropbox introduces Streaming Sync with up to 2x faster syncing of large files

Heavy Dropbox users may have noticed that large files sixteen megabytes in size and up won't start downloading to their other devices until they've finished uploading fully to the Dropbox cloud on the device which has initiated sync.

A new Dropbox technology dubbed Streaming Sync promises to speed up sync times of large files by up to two times, by downloading small slices of a large file as it's still being uploaded to the servers.

Before you can start taking advantage of this technology, you must update your desktop Dropbox client to the latest version...

120 Sports is a highlight reel in your pocket

When away from home, it's sometimes challenging to catch up on sports news. Sure, there are apps that provide basic scores and statistics for games and matches, but it's a rarity to find an app that shows highlights and other forms of media. Whether it's the decision on LeBron's future or the Argentina vs Netherlands penalty kicks, video sports commentary is harder to find.

Enter 120 Sports, an app developed by the Sports Illustrated network, popular for the magazine of the same name. The app is essentially a collection of video coverage of the latest sports trends, but with a few added twists. I used the app for a while and here's what I found...

Munin review: a mythical platformer with a twist

Platform games, often dubbed platformers, have always had a special place in my heart, so when I heard about Munin in our last App Recap, I downloaded it immediately and have been addicted ever since.

Munin is a 2D platform game for iPad based on Norse mythology in which a raven named Munin has been transformed into a human. In order to become a raven again, Munin must collect all of her feathers from various places in the beautifully dark world of Yggdrasil. If this seems like a storyline that would interest you, read on for my full Munin review...
