Apple's design team lead by SVP of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive was summoned at the 50th anniversary celebration of Design and Art Direction (D&AD), one of the world's most prestigious prizes for advertising and design. Apple was named both the best brand and best design studio of the last 50 years. In order to mark the occasion, Apple did something it's never done before.

The Cupertino company flew its entire 16-member industrial design team to London and made them available for a unique photo-op. These are the people that made your iPhones, iPods, iPads, Macs and numerous other products that ooze with style and sexyness...

New teardown reveals 16GB iPhone 5 parts worth $200

Last week we saw a preliminary teardown of the 16GB iPhone 5 peg its bill of materials (BOM) at $168. This number is essentially the sum of the costs of all of the handset's parts.

Today, however, a second teardown has been released, claiming that the BOM for Apple's new entry-level handset is a bit more than that. It says that number is closer to $200...

iPhone 5 shipping times fall to 3-4 weeks

Apple started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 last Friday at 12:01 am. And it wasn't 45 minutes after that, that people started seeing estimated shipping times drop from one to two weeks.

The Cupertino company would later announce that it sold 2 million iPhone 5s during the first 24 hours of availability. And apparently it's having trouble keeping up with the high demand...

SVP Phil Schiller says Apple has no plans for an iPhone 5 dock

Starting with the new iPhone, Apple will be replacing the decade-old 30-pin dock connectors in all of its future iOS devices. This means that, sans an adapter, all of your old dock accessories will become obsolete.

This includes Apple's white 30-pin dock — a signature accessory that's been around since the early iPod days. Most folks figured Apple would update it this fall with the new Lightning plug, but apparently that's not the case...

While most folks, including us, will have to wait until Friday to get their hands on the iPhone 5, a select group of journalists have been using the handset in secret for several days.

Developers seeing quick app review times for iPhone 5 updates

Good news for all of you folks who pre-ordered an iPhone 5, or plan on picking one up on launch day. Developers are reporting that Apple is pushing through app updates for the handset at a rapid pace.

As you know, both the new iPhone and iPod touch have a revamped 4-inch 1136 x 640 display. And any app that isn't updated to support the new screen resolution will be forced into a letter-box mode...

iFixit tears down Apple’s new EarPods

In addition to a new iPhone, and iPods, Apple also unveiled a new set of headphones last week. Dubbed "EarPods," the company said that it spent more than three years developing the accessory.

Today, the team over at iFixit performed their usual teardown of the headphones, and published an extensive report of its findings. And as you can imagine, some of it is rather interesting...

You've seen Samsung's anti-iPhone newspaper ad (and a Nokia fan's take) that takes a jab at the incoming iPhone 5.

The advertisement has caused quite a stir with its "it doesn't take a genius" tagline (an obvious reference to Apple Store Geniuses) and a laundry list of features focusing on the bigger display on the Galaxy SIII, twice the RAM and stuff like standard micro-USB plug, expandable SD card storage and swappable battery.

Taking a page from Samsung marketing department's book, an Apple fan created a spoof that goes a long way proving that a spec matrix can often be a double-edged sword...

Apple said to be building an enormous super data center in Hong Kong

Apple's already building another 500,000 square foot data center and a smaller tactical data center, both adjacent to its existing $1 billion iCloud facility in Maiden, North Carolina (which almost didn't get built). In addition, the company operates a data center in Newark, California and has revealed plans to build another 500,000 square feet data center in Prineville, Oregon and an additional $1 billion facility in Reno, Nevada. And if that wasn't enough, a report out this morning has it that another massive data center will crop up in Hong Kong SAR, China...

People to Samsung: we want the iPhone 5

Perhaps Samsung was overly confident in nice numbers its flagship Galaxy SIII handset's been putting or maybe its silly anti-iPhone newspaper ad has backfired, but the South Korean conglomerate appears to have found itself on the receiving end this time around.

A trivial question posted on Samsung Mobile's official Facebook page has produced a ton of unexpected answers favoring Apple's new iPhone 5. Rubbing salt into wound, an unrelated survey has also revealed that nearly a whopping two-thirds of polled users in Australia are considering to jump ship because they are lusting after the iPhone 5...

Judge denies Samsung’s motion to dissolve Galaxy Tab ban

US District Court Judge Lucy Koh denied Samsung's motion to lift the injunction on its Galaxy Tab 10.1 last night. The decision comes in response to Samsung's August 27 request to dissolve the sales ban against its tablet.

Back in June, Koh granted Apple a preliminary injunction against the Tab due to patent infringement. But after the jury in last month's trial found that the tablet didn't infringe on Apple's IP, Samsung wanted the decision overturned..

ITC to investigate Google’s complaint against Apple

Even though Motorola Mobility filed a complaint against Apple on August 17, the handset maker is now a Google-owned entity so this really reads as the Google v. Apple complaint. Unsurprisingly, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) today announced that it will be instituting a formal investigation of this complaint.

Within 45 days after institution of the investigation, the ITC will set a target date for completing the investigation and a panel of six administrative law judges will schedule and hold an evidentiary hearing pertaining to Motorola's (excuse me, Google's) complaint...
