Not a joke: Verizon just tightened eligibility terms, killing early upgrades

Straight from the 'what-were-they-thinking' department comes news that Verizon Wireless, the nation's leading carrier, Friday updated its upgrade eligibility terms, but unfortunately not for the better.

If you're on a two-year agreement, you'll be now eligible for an upgrade at 24 months as opposed to today's early upgrade eligibility at 20 months.

Remember, this is a carrier that just two years ago eliminated the 12-month upgrade. The first customers impacted by this change are the ones whose contracts expire in January 2014. Verizon cynically states that people are always free to "purchase a new phone at the full retail price at any time."

Monthly installments, much?

They even had the nerve to argue the change is "consistent with how the majority of customers purchase new phones today". So, folks are actually eager to commit their soul to Verizon's long-term agreements with no easy way out? Seriously? Let me guess: if consumers demanded it, the company would eliminate contracts, right? Looks to me Verizon didn't get the memo. But wait, there's more...

Apple to pay $53 million in iPhone warranty class-action settlement

Have you been frustrated by Apple's repair or replacement policy? You could be in for some cash, according to a Friday report.

The iPhone maker supposedly has signed a settlement deal worth $53 million ending a class action lawsuit that claimed Apple dragged its feet on honoring warranties for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The settlement, reportedly signed Wednesday by Apple's head litigation attorney, could affect "hundreds of thousands" of iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners, as well as people who bought the first three generations of the iPod touch media player...

iPhone 4 discount triples India sales in under a week

More positive feedback on Apple's efforts to reshape practices in the face of emerging markets. Sales of the iPhone 4 in India tripled in only five days, following a trade-in program. The program is viewed by some as a "disguised discount" but the results are obvious for Apple and its plans to compete in a nation where smartphone sales are just taking off.

Although India does not have a subsidy program to soften the blow of a full-priced iPhone, Apple has found a way to reduce the sticker shock by sharing the handset's cost with a growing network of India's retailers...

iPad 5: lighter and thinner thanks to tweaked display assembly

Several supply chain checks are now pointing to Apple's fifth-generation iPad being lighter and thinner over its predecessor, the iPad 4. According to one display expert, Apple will achieve the thinner appearance in a lighter device thanks to advancements in the display department. For starters, in reducing the size of LED backlighting and improving its efficiency, Apple engineers will be able to reduce the overall weight of the device. French government takes issue with Apple’s AppGratis removal

The AppGratis app curation software is no longer available on the App Store but the controversy is far from being over. After AppGratis CEO Simon Dawalt lambasted Apple on a company blog for kicking his app out of the App Store, a move he called "an absolutely crazy situation to deal with," a French minister today slagged the iPhone maker over the ouster. Fleur Pellerin, France’s junior minister for digital economy, publicly described Apple’s decision to pull AppGratis as “extremely brutal and unilateral.”

She urged European regulators to “think about legislation” because Apple is not “behaving ethically" in its dealings with small startups like AppGratis...

Bump update breaks iTunes sharing at Apple’s (music biz’s?) request

If you use Bump, a cross-platform app for sharing photos, contacts, music and more between different devices, you may want to pass on today's update as it's removed the handy ability to share songs from your iTunes library.

"We're sorry, but we are no longer permitted access to iTunes audio files on the device," release notes accompanying the download read. In removing access to iTunes audio files in the file sharing section, Bump didn't just appease to Apple, it's also a little less useful now...

Technical challenges delaying iPhone 5S, budget iPhone, iPad mini 2?

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who actually has a pretty good track record in predicting Apple's product plans, has some bad news for Apple fans. In a note issued to clients Thursday, he basically wrote that Apple's next batch of iDevice upgrades may hit the market later than originally expected due to a number of "technical challenges" related to the inclusion of fingerprint sensor beneath the Home button.

I’m sorry Verizon CEO, but you didn’t talk Steve Jobs into bringing LTE to the iPhone

Apple has long been criticized for not making an LTE iPhone at a time when most Android handsets boasted high-speed cellular networking capability. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has come out of the woodwork to take credit for personally persuading Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs to add LTE connectivity to the popular smartphone.

He also shared interesting stats regarding the technology, saying that half of all wireless traffic on Verizon's network is now related to video content. McAdam remarks he's expecting that video will comprise two-thirds of all wireless traffic on the Verizon network by 2017, thanks to the company's capital expenditure in deploying LTE technology. As for his comment regarding an LTE iPhone, I'm not buying it and here's why...
