How to try the Apple Watch’s UI early through the web

A new project from the folks behind the news app Pipes allows prospective Apple Watch buyers to test the user interface on the web, before the Apple Watch's launch in March.

All you need to do is head to DemoAppleWatch.com, where you can "use" the Watch, play with 19 apps, and try the Apple Watch's Digital Crown to return to the home screen. The Apple Watch is modeled on official images from Apple, and lets users see how their messages, emails and home screen will look and work.

Apple Watch set to launch in March, says new report

Apple is planning to launch its Apple Watch within the next month or two, according to a new report from 9to5Mac. The site's Mark Gurman says that the company is finishing up work on the wearable's software, and sources familiar with the project say it's on track to begin shipping in the US by the end of March.

TapSense wants to put ads on your wrist

If you thought Apple's Watch would be totally free of pesky ads, you have another thing coming. A mobile marketing firm called TapSense announced at the CES show yesterday a brand new software platform to bring contextually aware advertisement to Apple's hyped Watch.

Billed as a programmatic ad platform, the TapSense SDK for app makers, along with programmatic APIs for brands, makes opt-in advertisement on the Apple Watch a reality.

The question is, are we as a society ready for coupons and other marketing offers on our wrist? And if so, will Apple actually allow third-parties to inject advertising into Glances and Notifications on the Watch?

Poll: will you buy Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch, the iPhone maker's foray into wearables, is arriving this Spring starting at $349.

And while we know quite a bit about the anticipated wrist-worn computer, Apple's left a few important questions hanging in the air.

Among them are important details concerning the Watch's specific launch date, battery life, a possible killer feature and price points for higher-end models.

Assuming the vast majority of folks who are in the market for an Apple smartwatch opt for the entry-level device, we're curious to learn whether you'll be buying one when it comes out. Or maybe you've decided to wait for a second-generation model, or pass on the Watch altogether?

Top startup investor Fred Wilson says the Apple Watch will be a flop

Fred Wilson, a prominent startup investor and partner of Union Square Ventures, has posted a series of predictions for 2015 and his forecast isn't looking too good for Apple's first new product category in years.

Wilson, who has put money in Twitter, Zynga, and other large companies in their early stages, doesn't think the Apple Watch will be able to live up to Apple devices before it like the iPhone and iPad, both of which reshaped the consumer electronics industry.

TAG Heuer announces plans for smartwatch ahead of Apple Watch debut

LVMH watch chief Jean-Claude Biver announced today that its popular luxury watch line TAG Heuer is pushing ahead with plans for a smartwatch. At a press conference in Switzerland this morning, the executive admitted he had dismissed the threat of wearables, but recently had a change of heart.

"We started on the project about four months ago," Biver told journalists. "We have done several partnerships and might also do acquisitions." Google and Intel are among those rumored to be working with TAG on its smartwatch, which is believed to feature both mechanical actions and digital sensors.

Apple Watch reportedly entering mass production in January amid ‘breakthroughs’ in yield issues

Instead of the previously mentioned February timeframe, the Apple Watch will be entering mass production in January as Apple's component suppliers have reportedly solved yield issues concerning vital components such as the display and processor, according to a new supply chain report published by Taiwan's United Daily News [Google Translate] and relayed Thursday by GforGames.

As a result, the device might hit store shelves in time for Valentine's Day, as originally suspected.

According to a recent rumor, Apple’s retail boss Angela Ahrendts told staffers that the highly anticipated wrist-worn gizmo will be launching in the spring.

WatchBoard: a new Apple Watch SpringBoard replacement for iPhone and iPad

Aaron Ash, the creator of the legendary jailbreak tweak called Barrel, is back with a brand new creation called WatchBoard. WatchBoard is based off of the Apple Watch UI, and it's the best implementation of said concept that I've seen thus far.

Ash's expertise in this area is immediately apparent when it comes to design decisions, settings, etc. Not only that, but the tweak works on both the iPhone and the iPad. Have a look at our video walkthrough of WatchBoard after the break to see what makes it so good.

Rumor: Apple switching to Samsung-made Apple Watch chips, iPhone 6 battery and flash storage

The latest scuttlebutt fresh out of Korea has it that Apple is considering switching to Samsung-made components for the new iPhones and Apple Watch, including iPhone 6 batteries manufactured by Samsung SDI and NAND flash manufactured by Samsung's component making arm.

The story matches up nicely with a BusinessKorea report earlier this month which claimed Apple was considering changing its flash storage provider due to alleged issues with some 128GB iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units.

Tapping iOS 8 Extensions to offload Apple Watch app processing to iPhone is a smart move

In conceiving a feasible solution to running third-party apps in the extremely constrained power environment of the Apple Watch, Apple has come up with a rather peculiar yet familiar idea.

Initially, any third-party app processing will be offloaded to an iPhone in your pocket until the Cupertino firm begins accepting fully native Watch apps late next year.

Such an approach leaves only the app's storyboards and user interface resources running directly on the Watch, with everything else happening on an iPhone.

The only exception that proves the rule are Apple's stock apps which get executed on the Watch itself. In addition to acting as a viewport for third-party apps running on na iPhone, the Watch also manages Notifications and Glances and performs other lightweight housekeeping operations that don't tax the battery much.

To accomplish this feat, Apple is leveraging App Extensions in iOS 8 to run third-party Watch apps in a split mode.

PayPal mobile payments app now available for the Pebble smartwatch

PayPal has announced that its popular mobile payments app is now available for the Pebble smartwatch. In a blog post, first spotted by VentureBeat, the company said that owners can now pay for goods and services at select locations using their Pebble, linked to their PayPal account.

Users can make PayPal payments using one of two methods: by checking into a store using the PayPal app, or by providing the store with an auto-generated payment code. Both ways require that the particular location support PayPal payments, and the latter requires special POS hardware.
