Apple Watch to track your glucose on time thanks to new regulation

The Food and Drug Administration ruled on Friday that it will be taking a hands-off approach when it comes to the regulation of health apps and software.

VentureBeat reports apps that simply convey and track data will be left alone and won't need specific approval by the FDA like apps that provide specific medical advice. This is big news for the Apple Watch when it ships in April.

Swatch changes tune, takes on Apple Watch with own smartwatch featuring mobile payments

Now that Apple CEO Tim Cook has at last confirmed that the Apple Watch goes on sale in April, traditional watch makers and companies like Pebble are starting to show their cards.

Pebble, for instance, recently confirmed plans for new wearable products in 2015. So did Tag Heuer, having confirmed building a smartwatch of its own.

And now Bloomberg is reporting that Swatch will start selling a smartwatch within two to three months. It'll integrate with Windows and Android, but not with iOS, support mobile payments and communicate via the Internet “without having to be charged.”

Apple could hold a special event late February [updated]

Apple could be holding a special event at the end of February, reports French Apple blog iGen. According to sources, Tuesday, February 24th could be the specific date Apple has chosen for this event, which would likely focus on an official Apple Watch launch, and possibly the the long-rumored 12-inch MacBook Air.

BGR: iOS 8.2 due next month, Apple Watch launch event planned

Tuesday, BGR said it's learned from its own sources that Apple is shooting to release iOS 8.2 around March, ahead of the Apple Watch launch in April. “A trusted source” privy to Apple's most recent roadmap told the technology blog that Apple isn’t planning to release iOS 8.2 this month.

In addition to general improvements and fixes, the headline feature of iOS 8.2 is official support for Apple's wrist-worn device, which in all likelihood entails  a companion iPhone app for installing apps onto the Watch and managing various device settings.

Todoist shows off its Apple Watch productivity app

When I think of it, the more it seems to me that the Apple Watch will be a boon to my productivity. For instance, the Watch will send me meeting reminders and calendar invitations, which beats having to pull an iPhone out of my pocket.

Todoist, a cloud-based task and project-management service, promises to do the same for to-do lists. Their Watch app is nearly finished and now developers have shared screenshots (via TechCrunch) and a video which demonstrates how Todoist will bring to-do lists and task management to the wrist.

Pebble planning new devices for 2015, undeterred by Apple Watch

Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky has revealed the wearable company has plans for new hardware products in 2015, undeterred by the highly-anticipated launch of the Apple Watch in April.

In an interview with The Verge, Migicovsky also said Pebble is planning software that is quite different from what's currently found on the wearable for its new devices in 2015.

Report: Apple Stores to keep gold Watches in MagSafe-equipped safes overnight

Apple will house those pricey Apple Watch “Edition” units in safes overnight, according to the well-informed blogger Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac.

Unnamed sources told the author that each Apple retail store that'll carry the device is going to be outfitted with safes designed to keep the most pricey version of the wrist-worn device protected from theft while charging overnight. The Apple Watch “Edition” features a case crafted from 18-karat gold.

Some of the stores have reportedly already begun installing the safes ahead of the Watch’s launch in April.

Apple wants some Watch apps ready in two weeks

According to sources who spoke to MacRumors on condition of anonymity, Apple told certain developers to have their Watch apps ready by mid-February.

Ostensibly, among them is one of biggest Apple Pay partners who was reportedly asked to prepare an iOS app with WatchKit support and have it ready to launch in the App Store by February 12.

The wrist-worn gizmo is arriving in April, Apple CEO told investors on an earnings call earlier this week. Conventional wisdom says testing third-party apps ahead of the launch is necessary to ensure key Watch apps work properly and, more importantly, don't create a major drain on the battery.

Another possibility: carefully-selected developers get a chance to show off their apps at a launch event, assuming there's any. In addition to furthering the Watch narrative, featuring third-party apps in live demos at another event would go a great length toward explaining what the Watch is really for and maybe turn us all into believers.

Sounds plausible?

eBay working on bidding app for Apple Watch

eBay may be developing an app for the Apple Watch which ties to its existing iPhone and iPad software, as per a job listing AppleInsider highlighted yesterday.

Originally posted to eBay's careers webpage in November, the ad was spotted recently on LinkedIn.

The ad states the bespoke Watch app is being developed by the company's New Technology Group, which employs over 200 engineers in product development in Portland.

An ideal candidate will “design and implement elegant solutions for the Apple Watch that will complement our core iOS eBay app,” reads the ad.

Noted analyst pegs 12″ MacBook Air for Q1, reiterates March launch of Apple Watch

Pretty accurate KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a brand new note to clients. In it, he confirmed an earlier report calling for a March release date of the Apple Watch (remember, Apple's retail boss mentioned a vague Spring release date).

In the note, a copy of which was obtained last evening by MacRumors, Kuo also claims that a rumored MacBook Air refresh with a twelve-inch Retina display and a radically redesigned chassis will go on sale during the first quarter of this year.
