Twitter updates iPad app with new features, starts rolling out ‘mute’ function

Twitter today posted an update for its iOS app, bringing it to version 6.5. The update brings about a handful of improvements for the iPad client, including a new design, photo and video previews for timeline, and easier access to DMs.

It also appears that Twitter has begun rolling out its new 'mute' feature to its web and mobile apps. Earlier this month the website was discovered testing the function with select users, but today it's becoming available on a wider scale...

Vimeo users will be happy to hear that the video streamer rolled out a new version of its iOS client today. The update brings the app to build number 4.1, and features an all-new design, as well as various other improvements.

Instapaper introduces Highlights, revamps web UI

The popular read-later iOS app Instapaper (I prefer the free Pocket app, formerly Read It Later) has received an interesting update this morning bringing out a new Highlights feature which lets you create and save passages of text from any article, useful to keep those quotes and important notes handy. The biggest threat to Instapaper's further adoption is its pricing structure: unlike the free Pocket, Instapaper is a $3.99 value...

Yahoo News Digest has gone global

Yahoo's News Digest iOS app isn't just gorgeous, it's a great time saver, too. For those unfamiliar with Digest, it uses Yahoo-owned Summly technology and algorithmic and human editorial curation to aggregate and summarize the day's most important topics from a variety of trusted sources and premium media outlets.

With your news delivered twice a day, it's a great way to start your day in the morning and wind down in the evening, without spending too much time catching up on the most important news.

The catch? The news it serves focuses on U.S. and UK markets. But not anymore: as of today, the new version of the app serves news globally, with both international and Canadian editions of the Digest now available...

United Airlines app updated with new in-flight streaming video service

Back in March, we told you that United Airlines was on the verge of launching a new in-flight movie service for iOS users. The service would allow iPhone and iPad owners to watch over 150 movies and 200 TV shows on their devices for free.

The program launched last month on select aircraft, and today the official United Airlines app was updated to support it. With the app installed, users on compatible planes will be able to access free media while connected to Wi-Fi in-flight...

Google Maps 3.0: offline mode, lane guidance, Voice Search, pins and much more

The Internet giant Google today refreshed its native Maps iOS app with a handful of stuff, including lane guidance in turn-by-turn navigation, Uber integration, Voice Search and more.

A major update, Google Maps 3.0 - available free of charge in the App Store - now allows you to save maps so you can access them without an Internet connection, a major advantage over Apple's built-in Maps.

While you could previously save maps by typing 'ok maps' into the search field, version 3.0 takes this further by providing a proper menu item for the feature and syncing your saved maps across devices. There's lots more to get excited about this Google Maps release so jump past the fold and have a look yourself...

Minecraft PE 0.9.0 update: Expected features and release date

Minecraft: Pocket Edition is one of the most popular games for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, consistently ranked among the top of the App Store charts. The mobile version of Minecraft has made impressive strides over the past few years to catch up with the desktop version, in terms of functionality and gameplay, and even more features are planned to be added in the upcoming version. Minecraft PE 0.9.0 is expected to be a huge update, having been in development since at least last September, so read ahead for expected features and a potential release date…

Tumblr’s iOS app now supports theming

Yahoo-owned Tumblr has an excellent iOS app available in the App Store and they have been consistently adding new features to it.

In today's update, Tumblr for iOS has picked up long-expected support for blog themes so you can now easily change the look and feel of your posts right from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

The new Tumblr version 3.6, a 16.4MB download in the App Store, supports themes on both the iPhone and iPad.

Of course, you've had the ability to customize your Tumblr blogs with themes for quite some time, but on desktop only - this is the first time that theme customization has been implemented in Thumblr's mobile apps...

1Password for Mac updated with Watchtower support

Following the update to the iOS app this week, AgileBits has posted a new version of 1Password for Mac, bringing the password manager to version 4.4. The update includes just a handful of improvements, but is notable because it adds Watchtower integration.

For those unfamiliar with it, 1Password Watchtower is a service that identifies websites that are vulnerable to known security risks, and suggest that you change your passwords. It's fairly new, emerging after last-month's 'Heartbleed' bug infected several websites...

Twitter testing mute feature in iOS app

We've all been there: someone - maybe your ex or your biggest fan - is stalking you on Twitter and populating your timeline with stuff you don't want to see.

Or worse, if you've made a few enemies along the way you can bet they'll take to Twitter to post crazy stuff about you on an everyday basis. If you only use Twitter's official app, right now you have two options at your disposal to deal with the situation.

You can either A) unfollow your ex and risk turning him or her into an enemy, or B) block an account that's been harassing you online. According to a new report, there will soon be a new way to stop receiving updates from accounts: the mute feature.

I know muting is currently available in third-party apps like Tweetbot so the newsworthy part here is that Twitter is finally testing this long overdue feature in its own iPhone and iPad app...
