Apple Owns 68% of Worldwide Tablet Shipments

IDC have been at the old researching game again, and this time they've decided that Apple's iPad accounts for a massive 68% of worldwide tablet shipments, which we have to admit, isn't to be sniffed at!

The results are for the second quarter of 2011, which means it is worth remembering that the recent influx of Android-powered tablets will no doubt have altered that landscape slightly...

Europeans Love Android More Than iOS?

Everyone loves sales numbers, right? If that's true, everyone really loves sales numbers that claim that either Android or iOS is winning the mobile war.

It seems different numbers point to a different winner in this war, or at least a different winner in each battle. And this time around it's Android's turn to be the victor...

Why Gtalk is Already the SMS Replacement that iMessage Wants to Be

The race to kill SMS is on. Instant messaging apps have flooded both the App Store and Android Market, with WhatsApp and others seeking to replace SMS by offering free, cross-platform messaging in (sometimes) fancy-looking apps that allow not only the sending and receiving of text, but also the sending of pictures and video.

Even Samsung is set to join the fray, with ChatON being the company's first foray into the world of instant messaging. Samsung promises to release apps on just about every platform. It seems that everyone has it in for SMS, and the carriers must surely know what's going. And let's not forget Apple's iMessage...

HTC Considering webOS Purchase to Compete Directly with Apple

You might not know it, but HTC (High Tech Computer) has been around for more than a decade. In its earlier years, the company produced smartphones sporting older versions of Windows Mobile OS.

With the rise of Android in 2009, HTC started to focus on the up-and-coming OS. The move has helped grow the company exponentially over the last few years. In 2010, it also joined in on the Windows Phone 7 party.

But the landscape has changed in the mobile OS industry over the last several months. Microsoft and Nokia have announced a strategic partnership, and then there was Google's Motorola purchase. So where does that leave HTC?

Android App Downloads Could Outpace the App Store Eventually

Could Android app downloads soon outpace those of iOS apps from the App Store? According to research done by Ovum research (via CNET), all outlets currently offering Android apps will serve up approximately 8.1 billion downloads this year alone. This is opposed to an estimated 6 billion in the App Store.

It's important to keep in mind, however, that the sheer number of app downloads doesn't necessarily translate to a healthy or profitable ecosystem...

Fan Favorite Dolphin Browser on Android Arrives in the App Store

Arguably the best web browser available for the Android platform, Dolphin, is now also strutting its stuff on iOS. Dolphin's claim to fame is its deep gesture integration, which reduces the need for quite so many on-screen buttons. Perfect for smartphones with smaller screens, just like the iPhone.

Offering its wares for free, Dolphin joins a long list of web browsers in the App Store which aim to take a piece of the browsing pie from the stock Safari software, but it may need to offer something unique if it's going to make people switch...

Amazon’s Android Tablet to Cost “Hundreds Less” than iPad

A new report from the New York Post claims that Apple is about to gain a new competitor in the tablet market, with online book store and music giant Amazon set to enter the fray with its own set of tablet devices.

Powered by Google's Android mobile operating system, Amazon's tablets are believed to be set to cost 'hundreds less' than the iPad's base $499 price tag. That pretty much confirms a $299 Amazon tablet...

Apple Wins in Dutch Court, Blocks Samsung Phone Shipments

The Apple-Samsung lawsuit has been grabbing headlines left and right over the last few months. The action has especially heated up over the past few days, as Samsung tried to prove to a Dutch court that it's not copying Apple's products.

But even with their Kubrick evidence, the judge found the Korean company to be in violation of Apple's patents. The ruling bans Samsung from selling several devices, including the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, in the European Union...
