Doing Business with Apple: Verizon’s Side of the Story

By now you must have heard that AT&T didn't have the exclusivity of the iPhone anymore, as Apple signed a multi-year deal with Verizon. Business Week has an interesting article showing how it took years for this agreement to take place.

In this article, Verizon's President Lowell McAdam gives us an idea of what it was like to deal with Apple. Let's analyze what he has to say...

Comex Waiting on Verizon iPhone for Next Untethered Jailbreak?

According to a recent tweet from well-known iPhone hacker Comex, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 might be released after the Verizon iPhone’s debut. In reply to a tweet asking if Comex would wait for iOS 4.3 to release his untethered jailbreak, Comex replied:

“I don’t know, I think I’m waiting for the Verizon iPhone.”

So far, the only untethered jailbreak method available for 4.2.1 is the iPhone Dev-Team’s redsn0w 0.9.7beta6 which is currently Mac only...

A Closer Look at The Verizon iPhone’s ‘Personal Hotspot’

Yesterday, the Verizon iPhone was announced. Not much is different; there is a new CDMA antenna and mobile hotspot feature coined as "Personal Hotspot." This new (currently) Verizon-specific iPhone feature mimics popular jailbreak utilities like MyWi.

Personal Hotspot will be a new, pre-installed software feature for the Verizon brand of iOS. This mobile hotspot feature has been available on most Android phones for quite some time. Some more details have surfaced about Personal Hotspot...

New Verizon iPhone Could Significantly Alter Apple’s Release Strategy

One of the things that concerns me about the release of the Verizon iPhone 4, is how this anomaly in the iPhone release schedule will change Apple's strategy. Will it change it at all? Will it be business as usual come June 2011? The main group of people that are potentially impacted from this change are current iPhone owners, AT&T customers.

Are we still likely to see the next iteration of the iPhone released this summer, or does this bring significant change to what we've all grown accustomed to over the years?

Has Apple Finally Solved the iPhone 4 Antenna Woes?

Now that the Verizon iPhone 4 has been officially unveiled, it was only a matter of time before someone tried to replicate the infamous "death grip" which causes signal degradation to the point of dropped calls. Those issues stemmed from the way the iPhone 4's antenna was designed, which resulted in attenuation issues when holding the device a certain way.

After a few flat out denials and a misguided PR campaign, the situation was dubbed antennagate, after the famous Watergate political scandal of the 70's. Now that Apple has released a revised version of the iPhone 4 in order to meet the compatibility standards of Verizon's CDMA network, were they able to address the antenna issues along the way?

The Verizon iPhone 4, What’s Changed?

Wondering what the differences between the Verizon iPhone 4 and the AT&T version are? Well maybe we can clarify a few things for you. For starters, let's talk appearance. The volume and ringer mute buttons have been moved, to accommodate the new antenna design (see extra notch above mute button). Current bumpers and cases with just a hole for the side controls will not fit the Verizon iPhone 4 model.

Now as far as the internals go, the 2 models are almost identical, save for the obvious fact that the new Verizon model will have CDMA chipsets and AT&T models use GSM technology. For those not so tech savvy that means that you will be unable to use an AT&T version of the iPhone on the Verizon network.  And in case you haven't heard the bad news, CDMA also means that you are unable to be on the phone and use data at the same time...

Poll: Will You Get the Verizon iPhone?

The Verizon iPhone was finally announced this morning, and even though it doesn't bring anything new to the table, some people will probably jump ships to leave AT&T for Big Red.

We created a simple poll to get a feel of what you guys are going to do. Are you going to flee AT&T? Will you stick to it? Please take a few seconds of your time to take this poll...

The Price of Turning Your Verizon iPhone into a Mobile Hotspot

I guess the most exciting thing about the Verizon iPhone's announcement this morning was the fact that you will be able to use your iPhone as a hotspot for up to 5 devices. This means you'll be able to turn your Verizon iPhone into a hotspot and share your Internet connection with up to 5 devices around you.

Sounds great, right? It is great. Not so great is that the pricing information has been left aside and no one at Verizon deemed it necessary to let people know how much this great feature will cost...

AT&T Users Have No Reason to Envy Verizon’s iPhone

After many years, months, and days of hardcore speculation, the details about America's worst kept secret are at last out of the bag. Underwhelming as it was, today's Verizon press event functioned like more of a low key gathering when compared to the Steve Jobs driven spectacles that Apple puts on.

The differences between the two companies press unveilings aptly foreshadowed how underwhelmed I came away feeling when the event was all said and done.

Granted, I understand that this wasn't your typical Apple announcement and Verizon never perpetuated that it was. Still, I can't help but feel like I got a small fry when I specifically asked for a large...

What a Verizon iPhone Means for AT&T

I've seen the same question being asked over and over again on Twitter and in the comments here, so I figured it'd be a good idea to clarify things up a little bit. Many of you are confused about Verizon getting the iPhone. Does that mean AT&T will lose the iPhone? Absolutely not.

AT&T will not lose the iPhone. Come June, Apple will unveil a new iPhone and this iPhone will be available on both AT&T and Verizon. Up until today, AT&T had the exclusivity of the iPhone, meaning they were the only carrier allowed to sell it in the US. Today, this exclusivity came to an end and Apple decided to add an additional carrier in the US...

How to Check Your Verizon iPhone Eligibility

The Verizon iPhone has been announced, and if you're one of the millions that is probably planning on buying one, you can now check your contract eligibility. Among other things, the Verizon iPhone has a new antenna. This should make call reliability much better with the iPhone on Verizon's network.

If you are a current Verizon wireless customer, Apple has posted a page where you can check your contract eligibility for an upgrade. Verizon also has an eligibility page for customers to check their contracts as well...

Jailbreak and Unlock Coming to the Verizon iPhone?

One of the first questions that might have come to your mind after the announcement of the Verizon iPhone this morning probably was: can you jailbreak the Verizon iPhone? Can you unlock it? That's something we obviously can't know for sure until our favorite Team of iPhone hackers get their hands on one of those babies.

However, I would assume that the jailbreaking process for the Verizon iPhone might not be different from AT&T's. I assume the iOS loaded will have the very same backbones, even though iOS for Verizon will include extra features such as the ability to use your iPhone as a hotspot...
