An overview of all the current iOS 10 and 11 jailbreak developments, and what they mean

Gone are the days of radio silence, followed by the single release of a finished jailbreak tool for all devices. As the scene moves from funded teams working in secrecy, to public exploits being worked on co-operatively by individual developers in an open forum, the workflow has also changed.

We now hear incremental updates, sometimes multiple times a day, which are more technical and reinforce, modify, or even invalidate previous news. That's why we've put together a quick round-up of the current state of affairs, which will bring you up to date.

Medusafied, PrivateMessage, and other jailbreak tweaks to check out this weekend

The jailbreak community has been brimming with potential following the release of Ian Beer’s tfp0 exploit for iOS 11.1.2, but we’re not out of the woods yet. Fortunately, developers continue to release new and exciting tweaks for those still comfily jailbroken on iOS 10.

In this roundup, we’ll discuss all the new jailbreak tweaks we’ve shown you throughout the last work week. As usual, we’ll begin by talking about our favorites in detail, and then we’ll outline the rest of them afterward.

Augment your Spotify Music app with Spodinhancer

If you happen to use Spotify for your music-streaming needs on your jailbroken iOS device, then you might take an interest in a new jailbreak tweak dubbed Spodinhancer by iOS developer Codey More.

If it wasn’t already evident from the name, Spodinhancer delivers a bevy of both cosmetic and functional augmentations to the Spotify app.

Apple stops signing iOS 11.1.2 and tvOS 11.1, making downgrades impossible

As if the circumstances surrounding the current jailbreak situation weren’t dire enough already, Apple has stopped signing both 11.1.1, iOS 11.1.2, and tvOS 11.1.

The latest move by the Cupertino-headquartered company makes it impossible to downgrade to firmware versions vulnerable to Ian Beer’s recently-publicized tfp0 exploit until downgrading tools receive support for iOS 11. That said, hopefully everyone had adequate time to prepare their devices beforehand.

EQE brings a system-wide equalizer to your jailbroken device

If you cherished the concept of EqualizerEverywhere back in the day, then we think you might like a new free jailbreak tweak called EQE by iOS developer r333d.

As the developer puts it, EQE is essentially EqualizerEverywhere’s successor. Acting as an entirely system-wide parametric equalizer, EQE lets you adjust the sound output of practically any app installed on your device.

There is an untethered jailbreak for iPhone X on iOS 11.2.1, but don’t get too excited

Security researchers from Alibaba’s Pandora Lab claim to have created a new jailbreak compatible with Apple’s latest flagship: the iPhone X. Furthermore, it appears to work flawlessly with iOS 11.2.1, which Apple just released to the public this week.

A blog post by Alibaba notes how the jailbreak isn’t semi-untethered like those released by Pangu and Luca Todesco in the last two years. Instead, it’s of the untethered variety, which means one could reboot the jailbroken device and continue using third-party add-ons without re-running the jailbreak tool on a computer.

Here’s why I look forward to jailbreaking iOS 11

If you’ve been following the news lately, then you might’ve caught wind about a particular tfp0 iOS exploit released by security researcher Ian Beer that could potentially aid in the development of an iOS 11 jailbreak.

Many people think the jailbreak is dead, but that doesn't seem to be the case. While a jailbreak tool for iOS 11 hasn't surfaced yet, I wanted to take this opportunity to share why I’m excited about the possibility of an iOS 11 jailbreak.

This tweak enables Kelvin support in the Weather app and more

Out of the box, your iPhone’s default Weather app supports both Celsius and Fahrenheit for depicting how hot or cold it is outside. While these might be two of the most popular units of measure concerning temperature, they’re certainly not the only ones.

Another unit that you don’t see very often unless you dabble in the world of science is Kelvin, and a free jailbreak tweak called 4000 Degrees Kelvin by iOS developer Sniper_GER unlocks this temperature unit throughout iOS.

Poll: Have you downgraded to iOS 11.1.2 yet?

With a powerful tfp0 exploit for iOS 11.0-11.1.2 out in the wild, the future looks somewhat bright for an iOS 11 jailbreak. On the other hand, you don’t have long to get your devices on iOS 11.1.2 before Apple stops signing the supported firmware.

Not only has iOS 11.2 been out for some time, but Apple just released iOS 11.2.1 on Wednesday, which means the signing window could be closer than ever to closing.
