Apple seeds iOS 10.1 beta 5 for iPhone 7/Plus to developers and public beta testers

Apple on Wednesday morning released a fifth beta of iOS 10.1 for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus only. The latest beta came out two days after the release of iOS 10.1 beta 4 on Monday.

iOS 10.1 beta 5 is available as an over-the-air download on an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus with a prior beta. Today's iPhone 7-focused release likely contains a cellular connectivity bug that Apple patched with an emergency update on October 17. macOS Sierra 10.12.1 beta 5 also released today.

Repair wizards over at iFixit flew out to Japan to obtain their iPhone 7 Plus (in Rose Gold), performing their ritual teardown dance which has helped confirm what we've been suspecting all along: that a second grille at the bottom doesn't house a second speaker.

Other interesting observations gleaned from peeking under the hood of the iPhone 7 Plus include a replaceable Home button, a lot bigger Taptic Engine than in the iPhone 6s, a bigger 2,900 mAh battery, dust and water-proofing measures and other tidbits.

Is the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera system worth getting the larger iPhone?

In previous years, the slight camera upgrade in the Plus model, never was a strong enough differentiator for me to upgrade the size of my iPhone. After all, 4.7 inch is the right size for me. Anything bigger and I'd need a man purse to carry it around.

Rumors leading up to the unveiling of the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus made it sound like the dual camera module on the larger device was going to be a big deal. For many, including yours truly, doubt started settling in. But after watching the event and going though Apple's website, I'm not sure the iPhone 7 Plus dual-lens camera system is actually worth it. Explanation:

No, the new iPhones don’t capture 4K video in 60 FPS as was rumored

We now know that a Vietnamese site which said it had used a real iPhone 7 and made claims that the device would be capable of shooting 4K video at a silky smooth 60 FPS, was lying to us.

Apple's just wrapped up its iPhone 7 presentation, press releases are up on the site, the store is back online and we can clearly see that the iPhone 7 Technical Specifications webpage states in black and white that the much-enhanced camera system on both new phones still captures 4K video at 30 FPS, just like the iPhone 6/6s series.

iPhone 7 Plus features dual 12MP rear cameras with 2x optical zoom

As rumored, the iPhone 7 Plus features a significantly better camera system than that of the iPhone 7. It comes with dual 12MP rear cameras, with a wide-angle and telephoto lens, that make the handset capable of taking noticeably better photos.

With the two 12MP cameras, the iPhone 7 Plus is capable of 2x optical zoom and 10x software zoom. This means that you'll be able to get closer to your subject than ever before. You'll see a new button overlay on screen that says 1x, which you can tap to jump to 2x.

Last minute iPhone 7 leak shows new LED flash, glossy black colorway & more

We have some last minute images of claimed iPhone 7 units leaked by Vietnamese outlet Techsignin ahead of Apple's iPhone 7 and Apple Watch 2 event today. A pair of photos provide yet another look at the backside of the iPhone 7, showing a rumored new four-part LED flash, a slightly curved camera design, a waterproof SIM tray and more.

Of course, the photos also show off that new black colorway that many people seem to be clamoring for. Check out the images and post your thoughts in the comments.

All iPhone 7 models are allegedly capable of shooting 4K video at a silky smooth 60 FPS

The iPhone 6s series brought the biggest camera jump so far, with the front shooter upgraded to a five-megapixel lens and the rear one going from eight to twelve megapixels with the ability to capture 4K video at thirty frames per second (FPS). Aside from other changes in the camera department, the next iPhone is said to double the frame rate for 4K recordings, letting you capture action at a silky smooth 60 FPS, according to a Vietnamese site that has allegedly used a real iPhone 7.
