The White House responds: cell phone unlocking should be legalized

With the United States Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski promising last Thursday to look into cell phone unlocking, the federal government is now expressing concern about the recent criminalization of the controversial topic, with the White House finally making known its official stance on cell phone unlocking.

R. David Edelman, a Senior Advisor for Internet, Innovation, and Privacy for the White House, Monday published the official response stating the government stands in support of those wishing to unlock their cellphones once they have fulfilled the terms of the contract. Unlocking your iPhone, as you know, basically frees your handset from the clutches of your carrier so you can take it to any wireless company's network...

Fresh iPhone 6 mockups call for a 4.6-inch edge-to-edge display

Martin Hajek, a 3D artist well-regarded for his mockups of future gadgets, is back at it again, this time with a fresh batch of renditions depicting what an iPhone 6 with a 4.6-inch screen might look like. He's calling for an edge-to-edge screen assembly - which in his vision looks just stellar - and the aluminum Unibody chassis with anodized black and silver back.

It's kinda like a cross between the iPad's back shell and the iPhone 5's two-tone design. Notice the ultra thin bezels and the lack of the Home button...

Chrome for iOS with Messages sharing and back button history now available

Google on Monday announced a new version of Chrome for the iPhone and iPad containing two new features. In addition to the obligatory stability and security improvements and bug fixes, Chrome build 25.0.1364.86 has brought out the ability to re-visit previously visited web pages by long-taping the back button.

This invokes a drop-down menu listing a history of the web pages you visited in the current session. The feature is also available on the desktop version of Chrome as well as on desktop and mobile version of Apple's Safari browser. Another nice-to-have enhances Chrome's Sharing menu with a new option for sending a web page via Messages...

AAPL dips below $400B, Buffett tells Cook to ignore cash complaints, buy back stock

You can't get a better financial advisor than Warren Buffett. The so-called 'Oracle of Omaha' Monday weighed in on what Apple should do, faced with low stock prices and one investor's call to use the iPhone maker's billions in cash. Although Buffett's appearance Monday morning on CNBC lasted three hours, the short version is this:

Apple CEO Tim Cook should buy his company's stock while cheap. It's uncertain whether the financial whiz will have any luck, seeing Cook's predecessor Steve Jobs supposedly ignored similar advice. ABI: Android is the smartphone app winner, but Apple will rule tablets

In the never-ending quest to handicap the iOS vs Android horse race comes a new flash analysis for 2013 forecasting Android will dominate smartphone apps, while Apple remains the clear leader with tablets. According to ABI Research, Google's mobile operating system will control 58 percent of smartphone app downloads.

On the other hand, just 33 percent of apps will be for Apple's iOS. But with only two months into year, the research firm's findings are being questioned...

This year, smartphones should outship feature phones for the first time

It has already happened in the United States and now comes word 2013 will mark the date when smartphones outsell simpler so-called feature phones globally. More than 918 million smartphones such as Apple's iPhone will ship this year, for the first time outnumbering feature phones.

According to research firm IDC, a nice 50.1 percent of mobile phones shipped this year will be smartphones, most destined for China. However, that small lead should widen greatly by 2017 as more emerging nations increase adoption of the powerful mobile devices...

Dropbox CEO: iCloud is a lock-in brimming with ‘bizarre limitations’

Apple's iCloud, a service that brings together all of your desktop and mobile devices with seamless synch and cloud-based storage, is basically a lock-in, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston opined speaking at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Praising his company's cross-platform approach to file sharing, Houston blasted iCloud for imposing "bizarre limitations" on what users can do with their files, remarking that people shouldn't really care what platform they are using in order to access their files anywhere and on any device...

Teardown reveals Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter contains tiny computer

This is kind of interesting. The folks over at Panic, the Oregon-based software company behind Mac apps like Coda and Transmit, were doing some digging around in Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter, and discovered it contains a tiny computer.

Now, we know Apple has a penchant for embedding authentication chips and such in its cables, as a way of controlling third party iOS accessories. But this is completely different. The Adapter has a built-in ARM SoC, 256MB of RAM and runs an OS...

Judge slashes $450M from $1B Apple v. Samsung verdict

United States District Judge Lucy Koh who oversees the Apple v. Samsung blockbuster trial, dropped a bombshell on Friday. Citing "an impermissible legal theory", she announced a drastic decrease of the $1.05 billion verdict from August 2012 by $450 million, leaving "poor" Apple with a rather "paltry" $599 million. She has also denied Apple’s request for an increase in damages and ordered a new trial for fourteen outdated Samsung products...

FCC questions ban on unlocking cell phones

The federal government is expressing concern about the recent criminalization of unlocking cell phones. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said Thursday his office will look at the subject to see if and what the agency can do. Earlier this year, an exemption in a digital copyright law expired, prompting outrage from some mobile phone owners.

The head of the FCC said he is "concerned" that a return to the ban on unlocked cell phones could stifle competition or limit innovation. As Cody reported last month, a White House petition calling for again allowing unlocking drew more than 100,000 signatures...
