Verizon’s LTE in 500 markets, VoLTE due in 2014

Just as U.S. wireless carrier AT&T yesterday said it rolled out its Long-Term Evolution (LTE) radio technology to new markets while expanding coverage in several existing markets, rival Verizon Wireless Thursday said its LTE now blankets five hundred markets nationwide.

The Big Red carrier now has 4G coverage in nearly 200 more markets than AT&T does. Verizon added a hundred new LTE markets in just eight months and was the first U.S. telco to start deploying high-speed LTE cellular technology two and half years ago. The company also announced it will begin rolling out Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology starting next year...

First Google Hangouts update brings new features

In the first major update since its release back in May, Google's cross-platform unified messaging software Hangouts has just enhanced your chatting experience with a couple new additions. Addressing some of the top requests, Google Hangouts versions 1.1.1 features improved iOS 6 support and now finally lets you send URLs, as well as and click on links received in chat messages. The Warhammer world is intimidating, even for people like me who have been regularly engaged in role-playing games for more than a decade. The game and its many, many pieces is expensive, it takes up a lot of space, and players are stereotypically known for being merciless in their gaming tactics.

In 1995, Games Workshop released the Warhammer Quest board game as a simple dungeon crawl set in the epic Warhammer world. Its popularity was so massive that the game is still considered one of the best ever to be released by Games Workshop.

Only a few weeks ago, Rodeo Games launched an iOS version of Warhammer Quest that is similar to the board game in look and feel, but makes it much easier for you to crawl through dungeon after dungeon for hours on end without having to wait for your friends to show up with the red vines and Mountain Dew…

Digg app updated with support for new Google Reader replacement

Shortly after Google announced that it would be shutting down Google Reader, social news site Digg announced that it would be building a replacement RSS aggregator that would utilize the best of Reader's features and sync with existing 3rd party clients.

Then, earlier this month, the Digg team announced that it was finishing up work on the first version of its Reader replacement, and that it would start rolling out to users on June 26. And last night, it made good on its promise via an update to its iOS app...

Mailbox app updated with landscape mode for iPhone, Gmail alias support

A little over a week ago, the Mailbox team pushed out an app update that added support for portrait orientation mode on the iPad. It was a welcomed addition, but it left a lot of users wondering when the iPhone version would receive support for landscape mode.

The team promised that the feature was in the works, and last night it delivered on that promise by posting a new version of Mailbox to the App Store. The update, which brings the app to 1.3.2, includes support for iPhone landscape mode and other enhancements...

Apple sending out iTunes Radio terms to indie record labels

In dramatic fashion, Apple's iTunes Radio negotiations with the top 3 record labels came down to the wire. After a number of setbacks, the company was determined to unveil its new streaming music service at WWDC. And it reportedly spent the days leading up to its keynote closing deals.

But now that the [beta] launch has come and gone, Apple is looking to expand its streaming library. According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, the company has been talking to various indie music labels, letting them know how the royalty pay scale work on the new service...

Contra: Evolution now available in the App Store

Gamers looking to drum up a bit of nostalgia this evening will be happy to hear that the official Contra game is now available in the App Store. The title actually first surfaced in the US App Store at the end of last month, but it was mysteriously and promptly pulled.

Apparently that May release was unintentional, as Konami and Punchbox Studios still had some finishing touches to put on the game. But it's back in the App Store today, for good this time, meaning you can now grab Contra: Evolution for both your iPhone and your iPad...

Plants vs. Zombies 2 to be delayed until ‘later in the summer’

Bad news this afternoon for Plants vs. Zombies fans. Electronic Arts has announced today that the highly anticipated sequel to PopCap's popular lane defense game will not launch next month as it had originally anticipated.

A few weeks ago, PopCap announced that the game, officially titled 'Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time,' would be released on July 18. But it appears EA—its parent company—thinks it needs more time to fine tune things...

Major Google Earth update brings revamped UI, Street View and more

Google has posted a significant update for the iOS version of its Google Earth app today, bringing it to version 7.1.1. The update features a number of enhancements, including a revamped UI, improved directions and Street View.

The overhauled UI brings the application in line with Google's other iOS offerings, with a new left hand menu panel that makes navigating the app easier than ever, and improved search that lets you browse through results faster...

Apple applauds Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage

Normally, the words 'Apple applauds' and 'Supreme Court' don't go together. The Cupertino company isn't on the greatest terms with the US government at the moment, what with the whole tax evasion thing and the ongoing e-book trial.

But today is a different story. In a pair of 5-4 decisions this morning, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex couples in two major cases, effectively allowing federal benefits for gay couples. And Apple says it applauds the ruling...

Poppy turns your iPhone into Viewmaster style 3D camera

An interesting project is brewing up over at Kickstarter. An iPhone accessory called the Poppy wants to turn any iPhone into a kid's 3D camera capable of capturing, viewing and sharing 3D stereoscopic stills and videos. It has two eyepieces to look through, a slot where you insert your device and mirrors which capture two stereographic images using your iPhone's single camera.

Perhaps most surprising fact is that Poppy needs no electronics to turn 2D images into 3D because its mirrors do all the heavy lifting, resulting in a light accessory that needs no batteries to operate...

Malware infestation running amok on Android

It's not the sort of recognition any smartphone maker wants, but Android appears to be the platform of choice for nine out of ten mobile malware authors. The growth of malware apps targeting users of Google's mobile operating system rose an unbeliavable 614 percent in just the last year, author's of a new study found.

Perhaps even more discouraging is three-quarters of the mobile malware could easily be eliminated through software updates, yet ignored by 96 percent of Android owners. As for Apple's iOS, it's nowhere to be found on the malware hit-list, an area in which Apple is happy to hand to rivals...
