Wallpapers of the week: purple and blue set the mood

Almost into double digits, Wallpapers of the Week is now moving into week nine with another great set of walls. The reason we are able to continually promote this section of iDB is because of excellent and talented readers like yourself. Every week, I receive submissions requesting to be featured on the site. After taking a look at the images, each week the best ones are cherry picked from the growing list of options.

As you well know, wallpapers in the translucent layer-based iOS 7 drastically change the UI. In a way never before imagined, the user wallpaper is now paramount to tweaking the mood of not only the Springboard, but also the subsequent menus and app interfaces. Today, we offer up two excellent walls for iPhone 5 by designer Maik Fischer...

The days are getting shorter and the ocean breeze is making its way inland. That’s when you know that the season is changing. I know that summer is on its final legs when Anime geeks from around the country converge on my tree lined city streets in massive hordes of school uniforms and giant robots. That’s where I’ll be this weekend.

Whether you are looking for a game to occupy your time in line at a convention or need an app to help make your pictures of cosplayers look better, we have a few apps that are going to make your weekend better…

Blackbar review: a text-based adventure that is missing the text

You type, “Get ye flask.” The game responds, “You cannot get ye flask.” Sound familiar? Then you know a little something about old school text-based adventures. It was always so difficult to figure out the correct way to type an action.

Blackbar is a text-based story that requires a similar activity. Only, instead of trying to command the character to perform an action, you must find the correct word to fill in the blank…

Galileo is a multipurpose remote motion stand for iPhone

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a review of the photography app Sphere (formerly TourWrist). After reading the review, the app’s developer sent me Motrr’s new photography mount, Galileo, which is a perfect accessory to the 360-photography app.

Motrr’s new spherical recording device made the front pages when its Kickstarter campaign went supernova and made seven times its original goal. The Galileo is currently shipping to Kickstarter pledgers and Motrr is taking preorders for the device for a mid-October launch.

In addition to being a spherical recording device that fits perfectly with Sphere, Motrr’s Galileo is an iOS-controlled remote motion stand for the iPhone and iPod touch. The device features 360-degree spherical rotation capability and lets users take pictures or view streaming video using pan-and-tilt speeds of up to 200 degrees per second. Set up your iPhone with Galileo and use another iOS device to control it by swiping your finger on the screen to move the angle in any direction you like. This multipurpose stand lets you use your iPhone for video conferencing, baby monitoring, and more...

AT&T’s new Aio Wireless prepaid brand goes nationwide mid-September

Responding to pressure from T-Mobile, AT&T in May announced Aio Wirelelss. The new wireless prepaid brand features data plans starting as low as $40 a month for 250MB and all the way up to $70 a month for seven gigabytes of high-speed data.

After having tested the service in Florida, Texas and Atlanta markets, AT&T said Friday that Aio Wireless will be available online to everyone beginning mid-September. And to raise awareness, AT&T is planning to give new customers their third month of service free.

More on that after the break...

Bunny Bonker reinvents whack-a-mole for a more modern sensibility

I know I’m going to get razzed by some of our readers for spotlighting this app today. It is super cutesy, based on a Chuck-E-Cheese game, and features a whistle-performed indie song that makes you think of an Amazon Kindle commercial.

But, mark my words, Bunny Bonker is challenging and fun and at least half of you will thank me for telling you about it…

Plants vs Zombies 2 racks up 25 million downloads

Just ten days ago, Electronic Arts announced PopCap's hotly anticipated Plants vs Zombies sequel topped sixteen million download since its August 16 App Store debut. Today, the super publisher shared another milestone: players have now downloaded Plants vs Zombies 2 twenty-five million times. That's nine million downloads in just ten days, averaging to a download rate of nearly a million copies per day...

Apple’s Passbook is now a registered trademark

Passbook, Apple's iOS app for collecting coupons, board passes and other digital cards, is now a registered trademark. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published the trademark registration Friday. This makes a clean sweep for the app, after its icon was trademarked by Apple earlier this month.

Apple had filed to trademark the app in 2012, just two months after unveiling Passbook during its annual June Apple World Wide Developer Conference.

Today's announcement comes as Apple continues efforts to trademark the term 'startup' as part of its retail services ahead of the expected September launch of the iPhone 5S/5C...

Court rejects faulty iPhone power button suit

A California U.S. District judge derailed a potential class-action lawsuit against Apple and AT&T earlier this week, rejecting a complaint that the two companies conspired against fixing a defect in the popular iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S handsets. Two California consumers had alleged a "wiggly" power button presented a safety hazard which both the tech giant and the carrier kept hidden in order to sell more of the handsets.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess dismissed the argument for a racketeering charge, ruling the safety hazards were "speculative" and occurred beyond the product's warranty period. The court's rejection could influence a second similar federal lawsuit still making its way through the legal system...

Details on ‘imminent’ AppleCare+ launch in Europe

We already told you that Apple has cancelled support personnel vacations from September 15-28 and is now training AppleCare support employees on iOS 7 and iTunes Radio ahead of the iPhone 5S/5C introduction next month.

Yesterday, word on the street was that Tim Cook & Co. were gearing up to roll out the extended AppleCare+ coverage for iOS devices in key European markets.

First details are now beginning to trickle in.

Allegedly, the AppleCare+ launch is now "imminent" in the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Switzerland, at least initially. If true, this will be the first time Apple offered the $99 extended coverage and premium support service to customers outside the United States, Canada and Japan...

Apple canceling support staff vacations ahead of iOS 7 launch

Just like it did ahead of every iPhone launch since the original iPhone's release back in the summer of 2007, Apple is now canceling vacations for its AppleCare support personnel ahead of next month's release of new iPhones. Specifically, Apple is restricting employees from taking time off from September 15 and all the way through September 28.

Of course, Apple during this two-week window is expected to announce and start selling the iPhone 5S/5C and release iOS 7 for public consumption. Just earlier today, we reported the firm is now asking its registered developers to update their applications with app icons optimized for the new iOS 7 sizes...
