Apple cuts maximum iPhone trade-in value to $225

Less than 24 hours after extending its in-store and online iPhone trade-in program to Italy (and coming to Australia later this week), word on the street reaches us that Apple Stores have now slashed the maximum trade-in value of eligible iPhone models, as part of its Reuse and Recycle program, to a new low of $225 for good condition iPhone 5 units...

Booq offers creative hardshell laptop sleeve and roomy backpack

There are a few product categories with which I am obsessed – mugs, jackets, and backpacks. Thankfully, my position at iDB allows me to feed one of those addictions on a fairly regular basis. A good backpack is your best friend. While traveling, on the road, or sometimes heading into the office, your backpack is with you on a daily basis.

Proper weigh distribution, materials, zipper quality, and pockets are key features for a good bag. What accessories you choose to use with the bag is also important. Today, we take a closer look at the Booq Boa shift backpack and Booq Viper hardcase 13. The combination is a one-two punch for protecting the items most valuable to you, a MacBook, iPhone, and iPad...

Kenu Airframe is the perfect dashboard companion for your iPhone

Keeping iPhone within arm's reach while driving is not only convenient, but also a matter of life and death. Every day, people wreck their vehicles fumbling around for their smartphone while driving. There are many mounts on the market, offering easy access to a smart device. However, I would argue Kenu's Airframe is chart topping.

When designing a car mount, there are a few factors that must be considered: where is it going; how will it attach; what will it hold; is it portable. While portability is not the most important, the Airframe will easily detach and run with you to the next step. Airframe is a great solution in a small package...

Google buys Songza, Rdio acquires TastemakerX

Google Music with its scan-and-match feature and streaming doesn't seem to be picking up any significant steam, and that's despite (or in spite of) Google's scale and an impressive one billion active Android devices in the wild.

Hoping to hit back at Apple and Beats, the Internet giant on Tuesday announced it's snapped up streaming music service Songza which, like Apple-owned Beats, specializes in finding the right music to fit your mood.

And in related music news, the popular Internet radio service Rdio today said it's acquiring TastemakerX, a music discovery and curation service...

Photos for Mac won’t be dumbed down, says Apple

Apple's surprise announcement that it will cease development of its Aperture app in favor of Photos for OS X Yosemite has left watchers scratching their head. There's also the problem of prosumers and iPhone photography enthusiasts, many of whom have grown dependent on Aperture workflows.

The problem is even more pronounced given concerns that any feature-parity between Photos on iOS 8 and the upcoming Photos for OS X Yosemite Macs would inevitably lead to significant dumbing down compared to Aperture's feature set.

Case in point: the iWork for iCloud effect.

Anyway, Apple has now official confirmed via a written statement that Photos for Mac will include certain pro-grade features such as photo editing, image search and third-party effects and plugins...

Readdle’s Scanner Pro now half price to celebrate 6M downloads, iOS 8 app in the works

Scanner Pro, one of the best apps for quickly scanning and saving a digital version of a paper document, has passed six million downloads since its App Store debut in December of 2009.

It's a noteworthy milestone in my book given the software costs seven bucks and has thus far gone temporarily free only once, as Apple's Free App of the Week in January.

To celebrate the milestone, Ukrainian developer Readdle has temporarily shaved 50 percent off Scanner Pro's asking price, now available for a limited time for just $2.99...

Yahoo’s Mail for iPad picks up mail filters and personalized web features

Yahoo's Mail for iPad debuted in April of 2013 and has since been gradually picking up new features like multiple personal and Business Mail accounts, folder management, message swiping, support for Apple’s VoiceOver feature and much more.

Today, the software has received another boost as Yahoo announced it's bringing multiple features from the web interface to Mail for iOS, including news, search and snapshots of the weather, sports scores, stocks, popular videos and Flickr photos, now all accessible in one app...

FTC accuses T-Mobile of placing unauthorized charges on phone bills for years [updated with note from the CEO]

T-Mobile has been aggressively marketing its Uncarrier initiatives to prove that it cares about customers, but the Federal Trade Commission has published a new complaint that accuses the carrier of knowingly cramming bogus charges onto customers' phone bills for years. The FTC claims that T-Mobile made hundreds of millions of dollars by knowingly placing charges for "premium" SMS subscriptions that, most often, were not authorized by customers…

Apple assembling in-house speech synthesis team to supplant Siri’s Nuance with better tech

As we've written before, Apple has created Siri in a modular manner, so that it could easily replace her Nuance-powered speech recognition engine with a similar piece of software. Siri since its inception has been reliant on Nuance technology, but things look to be changing sooner than later.

The company is reportedly assembling an in-house team of speech synthesis and voice recognition experts tasked with developing a proprietary technology that could supplant Nuance and give the personal assistant a “neural network” boost...
