Samsung to launch Gorilla-sized 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II phablet on August 15

Samsung is about to give the phablet a new meaning with the rumored introduction of the Galaxy Note II at a presser scheduled for August 15. A follow up to the last year's Galaxy Note with a 5.3-inch display, the Note II is apparently thinner and a bit taller. As a result, the display is also said to have grown in size a tad, now measuring a whopping 5.5 inches diagonally.

Just how exactly an average human being is supposed to operate this device is anyone's guess, though clearly there are people out there who prefer mobile devices that fall somewhere in between a large smartphone and a small tablet.

Apple, of course, is rumored to be addressing the trend of large smartphone displays with the next iPhone, said to be of the same width as existing iPhones, albeit a bit taller, making room for a four-inch display...

Verizon’s finance chief says the next iPhone could drop in the fourth quarter

Verizon's finance chief Fran Shammo dropped a hint concerning the next iPhone's availability during today's earnings call. Discussing the company's second-quarter results that saw Verizon activate 2.7 million iPhones for a 45 share of all smartphones sold on their network, Shammo hinted that the iPhone 5 (or whatever you prefer to call it) will arrive during the fourth quarter of this year.

The comment puts to rest rumors that the next iPhone could land in September. Conveniently enough, the latest iOS 6 beta 3 is set to expire on September 30. Conversely, Shammo's comment is also in line with Apple's annual refresh cycle. As the iPhone 4S launched on October 4, 2011, an updated model shouldn't arrive before October of this year at the earliest...

New iPhone 5 concept surfaces based on latest rumors

Between all of the leaked components, engineering samples, and cases we've seen so far, it feels like we have a pretty good idea of what Apple's next smartphone is going to look like. And in case you were having trouble visualizing it, we decided to post this new 'iPhone 5' concept that was drawn-up based on all of the recent rumors...

BGR on iPhone 5: NFC, 4G LTE, 1GB RAM, fall release

Boy Genius Report is a hit and miss when it comes to Apple predictions and today the publication's editor Jonathan Geller posted a story which essentially recycles a bunch of separate rumors concerning the next iPhone. According to the author, final production of the iPhone 5 will start later this summer, which is what both the know-it-all Wall Street Journal and reliable Japanese blog Macotakara heard previously...

More iPhone 5 cases surface that look just about right

CydiaBlog points us to a few purported cases for a sixth-generation iPhone, currently on sale over at TVC-Mall. These look just about right given the rumors calling for a taller iPhone with a two-tone design and a metal backplate that have been piling up recently. These cases also confirm leaked schematics and engineering samples which depict a FaceTime camera at the center and a smaller dock connector at the bottom.

It's been reported this morning that thousands of job seekers are currently lined up outside of Foxconn’s Chengdu, China plant, all vying for a number of summer job openings which could mean that Foxconn is ramping up hiring as it is getting ready to manufacture the iPhone 5, as the Japanese blog Macotakara suggested last week...

More purported next-generation iPhone cases surface

The rumor mill has been pretty active this week, coughing up more information regarding Apple's next smartphone. In the last few days, we've seen not one, but two sets of pictures of purported engineering samples for the unreleased handset.

With that, it seems like the evidence is really piling up in favor of the taller, two-tone iPhone design that first surfaced back in May. And apparently that's enough for accessory-makers, who are already churning out large batches of next-gen iPhone cases...

New iPhone 5 case molds emerge, indicating thinner design

Following claimed iPhone 5 engineering samples unearthed yesterday by GottaBeMobile, KitGuru today followed up with a new set of purported images of, you guessed right, another iPhone 5 engineering sample. Obtained from a "Far East source", the images look fairly consistent to a rumored taller iPhone believed to be coming around October...

Rumored Apple device with curved glass screen gets awesome mockup treatment

Curved cover glass could be the next big thing for portable devices. Apple reportedly invested in glass-cutting machines last year, fueling rumors that the iPhone 5 may feature a curved display akin to Nokia's Lumia smartphones. The idea gained credence when Nick Bilton wrote in a New York Times article last December that Cupertino was working on “a curved-glass iPod that would wrap around the wrist”.

We're not so sure Apple would attach the iPod or iPhone brand to such an unusual gizmo, but if it resembles this exquisite concept, count us very excited...

More evidence that next iPhone will feature in-cell touch panels

Information regarding the next iPhone has been fairly scarce over the past few weeks. Which is kind of odd, considering that the handset is believed to already be in full production.

But there is a new report out this morning on the upcoming smartphone. And it adds weight to previous rumors that the next iPhone will feature all new in-cell touch panels...

Case-makers starting to buy into recent iPhone “leaks”

Despite Tim Cook's vow to "double down on secrecy," we've seen a surprising amount of information regarding the next-generation iPhone in the past few weeks. We know its screen size, resolution, and even have a good idea of what it looks like.

Or do we? Perhaps the amount of data floating around is actually a sign that we don't know anything. Maybe everything we've seen to this point has been fake, or a misdirection. If so, this case manufacturer is about to throw away a ton of money...

What fragmentation? Apparently iOS 6 SDK allows for intelligently-scaling apps

One of the major staples of Android development's always been the operating system's ability to automatically scale apps up and down in order to accommodate whichever form factor they're being used on.

Apple's approach to form factor fragmentation has traditionally been the opposite one. As in, Apple requires app developers to target each screen size with a pixel-perfect user interface. Though iPads can pixel-double tiny iPhone apps, Apple wouldn't degrade user experience by letting iOS stretch apps' hard-coded interfaces.

It would appear that iOS 6 introduces a diametrically opposite approach, one letting developers construct interfaces that can intelligently adapt to different screen resolutions without looking plain fugly.

This is not just convenience, but a necessity given that rumored taller iPhone and an iPad mini, both allegedly due around September or October of this year...
