iOS 7.0.4 is jailbreak safe

Following this morning's release of iOS 7.0.4, we've been getting many questions regarding the safety of updating to the latest software version for those who are hoping to be able to jailbreak their device one day.

The good news is that it is completely safe to update to iOS 7.0.4 as it will not hinder your chances to jailbreak, should we ever get a jailbreak for iOS 7...

Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should do it

Bloomberg published an article today about Samsung's plans to release a device with a display that wraps around the edges. Why would you need such a feature, you may ask? As Van Baker, director of research at Gartner, explains, it's all about throwing a bunch of s#@& against the wall and see what sticks.

Curved screens may be a technology in search of a problem to solve, said Gartner’s Baker. Samsung may provide a test case because they have shown a willingness to release products into the market to see if they gain favor with customers, he said.

“There are enough companies out there that are very fond of throwing whatever hardware they can out into the market, just to see if anybody will bite,” he said.

Of course, Samsung will sell this to us as true innovation.

By definition, innovation is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulated needs, or existing market needs. Innovation must solve an existing problem, not just be a demonstration of what can technically be done.

Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should do it. But Samsung likes to prove it can be first. Not first at creating a new innovative product. Just first at creating a product.

baseCam, another fun realtime photo and video filters app

Filter apps can be found by the truckload in the App Store, and while some of them really stand out for the effects they offer or by their usability, others sometimes go unnoticed. Earlier today, I found out about baseCam, yet another camera app that brings real time video and photo filters to your iPhoneography.

After playing around with it for a few minutes, I have to say that I really enjoy its elegant and simple UI, as well as a few of the live filters it offers. The app description touts 25 unusual filters/effects, and I must say there are a few of them I really like, specifically the Dots, Pixelate, Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue ones...

iPhone market share is bigger in Japan than it is in the US

According to market survey, Apple has a slightly bigger market share for iPhone in Japan than it does in the US, as the WSJ reports:

Even before that, the iPhone was Japan's best-selling smartphone, with a 37% market share in the six months ended Sept. 30, according to Tokyo's MM Research Institute. That's comparable to the iPhone's 36% share in the U.S. in the third quarter, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

The market share in Japan is also expected to grow a bit due to the fact that carrier NTT DoCoMo started offering the iPhone for the first time in late September.

iPhone 5s beats Nokia Lumia 1020 in camera shootout

You know how they say that sometimes more is less. Some also say that specs don't really matter anymore. Well, it all comes true in a camera shootout carried out by the folks at Laptop Mag between the Nokia Lumia 1020, and the iPhone 5s. For those who are still keeping track of specs out there, let's note that the Lumia 1020 comes with a whopping 41MP camera. Apparently that wasn't enough to beat the iPhone 5s 8MP camera though...

The iPhone 5s conclusively beat the Nokia Lumia 1020 in our photo face-off, taking seven out of 10 rounds–and tying one. Even after updating the Lumia 1020′s camera software, which reduced issues with the blue color cast on many images, colors were still more accurate on the iPhone. Apple’s device also excelled when delivering detail and contrast.

Half of the Top Overall apps in the App Store are games generating 79% of revenue

An interesting tidbit of information coming from analytics platform Distimo about the App Store most popular category – Games – and how much that category generates in terms of revenue.

Looking at the Top 400 Overall Grossing, 48% of all apps in the Top Overall were games and those apps generated 92% of the revenue for Google Play in September 2013. For the Apple App Stores (average of iPhone and iPad), 52% of the apps in the Top Overall were games and these apps generated 79% of the revenue.

In short, half of the apps in the Top Grossing charts of the App Store generate 79% of total revenue. Note that these apps do not generate 79% of the total App Store revenue. They generate 79% of Top Grossing charts revenue.

Fantastical 2 for iOS 7 is out with new design and features

When it comes to third party calendar applications, very few names other than Fantastical come to mind. In a few years, the app has become a staple for anyone looking to improve the way they create, edit, and view calendar events on iOS or on Mac OS X.

Although I was a late adopter of Fantastical for iPhone, the app quickly became one of my essential applications. Not only it allows you to create events in a very efficient and intuitive way, but it also displays those events in a beautiful manner, greatly improving the stock experience provided by Apple.

Along with Tweetbot, Fantastical was one my most anticipated app updates for iOS 7, and I am happy to report today that Fantastical 2 is now available in the App Store, with a brand new iOS 7 look and many new features...

iOS still struggling with Daylight Saving Times as some users are affected with yet another bug [update]

iOS is no stranger to Daylight Saving Times bugs. It could actually be considered a recurring things as we've seen several occurrences of Apple's operating system not properly adjusting to time changes in the past, most notably back in 2010 and twice in 2011.

After all this time, you'd think Apple would have figured out how to properly adjust such a basic feature, but apparently they haven't. Some French users are reporting today that although the time has adjusted correctly to the country's DST change, there is still a little bug visible in the Calendar app...

How to speed up animations in iOS and make your device feel faster

iPhone 5S colors running iOS 7

Apparently, the iOS parallax effects and animations can literally make people sick. If that doesn't happen to you, don't discount this as just a phony report. This is real for some people, although I have yet to meet any of them. Apple listened to the complaints from users who were experiencing various degrees of motion sickness while using iOS and drastically increased the motion reduction feature that was already present before iOS 7.0.3.

As it turns out, not only will this feature reduce the motion of the user interface, but it will also make your iOS device feel like it's blazing fast.
