Amazon updates Kindle app with free sample search, custom dictionaries and more

Folks with an iPhone or iPad invested in Amazon's ebook service will be happy to hear that it has posted a solid update for its iOS Kindle client today. The update brings the app to version 3.9, and offers a handful of new features and improvements.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is the new Free Sample Search feature, which allows you to search through Amazon's extensive Kindle library to download free samples. And the Bring Your Own Dictionary option pretty much speaks for itself...

Tim Cook spotted in China again meeting with local carriers

Tim Cook is back in China this week, according to a new report. The CEO is allegedly there on business, talking with the local carriers there about Apple's leveling iPhone sales in the country, as well as its upcoming iPhone launches.

Citing sources familiar with Cook's meetings, tech.ifeng.com claims that Cook met with China Telecom's senior leadership this week. The talks are supposedly over, but it is not yet known if the executive has returned to the US...

Foxconn reportedly hiring 90,000 workers to help with iPhone 5S production

A new report out of Taiwan this morning claims that Foxconn is going on a major hiring spree to help fill orders for Apple's next generation iPhone, believed to be the iPhone 5S. Production on the handset is said to be ramping up ahead of its fall launch.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Taiwanese publication Focus Taiwan reports that Foxconn is starting to heavily recruit for its Shenzhen plant, and it's looking to add as many as 90,000 people to its workforce as it begins to fulfill major 5S orders...

Sprint sold 1.4 million iPhones during Q2, launches 41 new LTE markets

Sprint has released its financials for its second quarter of 2013, and once again the carrier saw strong smartphone sales. According to the company, smartphones accounted for some 86% of its postpaid handset mix, and approximately 1.4 million of them were iPhones.

But not all of the numbers fell in Sprint's favor. The carrier lost nearly 2 million subscribers during the quarter, due in large part to the recent shutdown of its Nextel network. And it also posted a staggering $874 million operating loss due to charges related to the closure...

Latest Apple TV beta adds music purchasing and ‘touch to setup’

Yesterday, Apple seeded beta 3 of Apple TV 5.4 software. And looking at the change log, it initially appeared that the update was little more than a maintenance update, as there were no new notable features. But a couple of cool things have since been discovered in the release.

For one, it looks like Apple has re-added the ability to purchase music through iTunes—as it stands, users can only purchase TV shows and Movies through iTunes on their Apple TV, and this appears to change that. And two, a new 'touch to setup' feature has been added...

Apple releases iOS 7 beta 4: this is what’s new

As expected, Apple has released the fourth beta of iOS 7 this morning. The update comes three weeks after the release of beta 3—longer than the the time period between previous betas due to a lengthy Developer Center outage caused by a security breach.

Beta 4 is available now to all registered Apple developers via OTA (over the air update), which can be installed by visiting the Software Update section in the Settings app of devices that currently have iOS 7 installed. And it should post soon to the dev portal...

Netflix’s user profile feature now rolling out to Apple TV

In April of this year, Netflix announced that it would be introducing some new family-oriented features to its video streaming service over the next several months. Among those mentioned was a new $12 family plan, and a new user profile option for multiple accounts.

Netflix hasn't launched the $12 plan yet, which allows families to stream different shows on up to 4 different devices (instead of 2). But it has started beta testing the personalized profile feature with a number of its users. And tonight, it starting rolling out to Apple TV...

AT&T acquires regional wireless carrier Long Lines

AT&T is at it again. Adding to its list of acquisitions, the company announced today that it will be purchasing regional carrier Long Lines Wireless. The telco has coverage throughout the midwest and owns some valuable spectrum licenses.

The news comes just a little over two weeks after AT&T announced it would be acquiring prepaid carrier Leap Wireless. And the company says the move is to help it improve its 3G and LTE network coverage in areas within Long Lines' footprint...

Samsung targets wavering iPhone users in new Galaxy S4 ad

Samsung has posted a new Galaxy S4 TV spot to its YouTube channel this afternoon. The ad, titled 'Ready for Takeoff,' follows the company's recent advertising trend, depicting a man using his S4 in public that eventually gets surrounded by interested onlookers.

This particular ad seems to target iPhone users more than Samsung's previous commercials, though, as it co-stars an iPhone owner who seems very interested in the S4, but says he likes a "simple phone" and worries about the complications of switching. Watch...
