BioShock and other 2K games discounted in Independence Day sale

Looking to add some new iOS games to your collection this weekend? 2K can help. The publisher announced on Friday that it will be running an 'Independence Day' sale on some of its high-profile mobile titles over the next week.

Included in the promotion are popular sports games such as NBA 2K15 and NHL 2K, as well as the turn-based strategy hit Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2 and BioShock. The discounts range from 25% off, to well over 50% off.

Shazam updated with support for Apple Music

The popular audio identification service Shazam updated its iOS client today with support for Apple Music. The release brings the app to version 8.7, and arrives just ahead of the launch of the new music service next week.

With Apple Music support, users will be able to identify songs using the Shazam app, and then tap a button to launch the service so they can listen to the track in its entirety. And remember it's free for the first 3 months.

Apple removing games featuring the Confederate flag from the App Store

Apple has joined the likes of Amazon, eBay, Walmart and others in removing products bearing the Confederate flag, reports TouchArcade. The outlet pointed out this morning that a number of apps and games, which featured imagery of the controversial flag, have been pulled from the App Store.

Despite the fact that Apple has told developers it's only removing titles that "feature images of the Confederate flag used in offensive and mean-spirited ways," several Civil War-era games, which contain images of the Confederate flag for historical and educational context, have been pulled as well.

Comic book creator ‘Halftone 2’ goes free as Apple’s App of the Week

Apple has just named "Halftone 2 - Comic Book Creator" its App of the Week for this week. This means that from now through next Thursday, you’ll be able to download the fun comic book-style photo editor for both iPhone and iPad for free—a solid savings of $2.

Beats 1 celebrity hosts to include Drake, Dr. Dre, Elton John and others

Apple's Beats 1 streaming radio service will feature celebrity hosts such as Pharrell Williams, Drake and Elton John, reports The New York Times. In a profile of Apple's newly recruited D.J., Zane Lowe, the outlet says a number of well-known stars have been given spots.

Other well-known stars on the menu for Beats 1 programming include Dr. Dre, who will host a show called "The Pharmacy," teen actor Jaden Smith, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. Apparently, each of them will be hosting and planning the shows themselves.

IFTTT updates iOS apps with unlimited DO recipes, improved widgets and more

Fans of the automation service If This Then That (or IFTTT) will be happy to hear that it's updated its line of mobile apps today. DO Button, DO Camera, and DO Note all received 2.0 updates today, as did the original IF app that now sits at version 2.5.

With the new releases, the apps all now support unlimited Do recipes and feature improved Notification Center widgets. DO Camera in particular received some nice additions such as new filters and the ability to draw on, and add emoji to, your photos.

Apple is quietly moving to prevent app developers from accessing app download data for ad targeting purposes, reports The Information. The move is part of the company's recent, and very public, push for greater user privacy.

As most of you are probably aware, major apps like Facebook and Twitter will scan a user's device for information on the app's they have installed. This way, they can show users advertisements that better match their interests.

Apple adds 7 new Flyover locations to Maps

Apple on Tuesday added a handful of new locations to the 3D Flyover feature in its iOS and OS X Maps apps. The new locations include San Juan, Puerto Rico and other cities around the world.

First introduced in Apple Maps when the app launched in 2012, the Flyover feature allows users to take close-up, 3-dimensional looks at buildings, landmarks and various other areas of interest.

Apple promotes Lisa Jackson to VP of environment, policy and social initiatives

Apple on Tuesday quietly announced the promotion of Lisa Jackson, formerly the VP of environmental affairs, to a new lead policy position. As noted by The Washington Post, Jackson's bio on the company's website now reads Vice President, Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.

In her new role, Jackson will not only continue to oversee Apple's efforts to minimize its impact on the environment, but she will also be responsible for the company's education policy programs such as ConnectED, its product accessibility work, and its worldwide government affairs.

Apple wins Outdoor Lions Grand Prix at Cannes for ‘Shot on iPhone 6’ campaign

Apple picked up the top prize in the Outdoor Lions category at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity this week for its recent "Shot on iPhone 6" ad campaign. The annual event, often referred to as the world's biggest ad festival, features thousands of ads from around the world to be showcased and judged.

The win marks the second Cannes Grand Prix award in three years for Apple and its longtime advertising partner TBWA\Media Art Lab. Additionally, the duo also picked up five Gold Lions awards for specific posters from the "Shot on iPhone 6" campaign, which showcases photographs shot using Apple's latest handset.

Apple renews exclusive Liquidmetal license through 2016

Apple has renewed its rights to use Liquidmetal Technologies' unique metal alloys in its products, according to a new SEC filing. As noted by MacRumors, a document was submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission today that extends the two companies' agreement.

The filing shows that Apple and Liquidmetal entered the new deal on June 17, and it's set to expire on February 5, 2016. The extension marks the third amendment the two firms have made to their contract, which includes exclusive rights to materials, since it was drawn up in 2010.

Apple seeds second OS X El Capitan beta to developers

Following the release of new watchOS 2 and iOS 9 betas, Apple on Tuesday seeded the second beta of OS X 10.11 El Capitan. The build is labeled as 15A204h, and is available to registered developers via the Updates section of the Mac App Store or through Apple's Developer Center.

Introduced two weeks ago at WWDC, OS X El Capitan is the next major version of Apple's Mac operating system. The update does not include a ton of new features, but instead builds on top of last year's OS X Yosemite with a number of performance and stability improvements.
