The Self Service Repair program, as it’s called, gives you access to the same tools, repair manuals, technical documentation and genuine parts that are used at the company’s own retail stores and by its authorized service providers.

US customers interested in repairing their own devices can start using Apple’s diagnostics tools to identify M3 Mac parts that may need repair in March.

“Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions give customers the same ability as Apple Authorized Service Providers and Independent Repair Providers to test devices for optimal part functionality and performance, as well as identify which parts may need repair,” reads an announcement in the Apple Newsroom.

The company published these repair manuals on its website:

In addition, support documents are available explaining how to replace the MacBook Pro’s bottom case and what tools you’ll need for that.

You can order genuine Apple parts from Apple’s Self-Service Repair Store. The company conveniently lists all the parts you can order to repair your M3 iMac.

Also, Apple has tweaked its System Configuration process for Macs to simplify repairs. Previously, you would need to contact Apple to activate a replacement part, but this will no longer be necessary beginning “early next month.”

Should you repair your own devices?

Self Service Repair is Apple’s answer to the right-to-repair movement that seeks to force companies to provide everything customers need to fix their devices.

However, if you’ve never repaired an electronic device, you should probably take your computer to an experienced technician who does this for a living. “For the vast majority of users who do not have experience repairing electronic devices, visiting a professional authorized repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair,” Apple advises.
