Peloton changes its mind: Bike+ will retain integration with Apple GymKit

Peloton’s GymKit integration for Bike+ owners on Apple Watch will co-exist alongside One-Tap, the company’s own workout and fitness tracking software.

Peloton recently announced that it would be dropping support for Apple’s GymKit feature in favor of tracking via its dedicated Peloton One-Tap app.

It took less than 48 hours to backpedal on the announcement—not because Peloton had the foresight to realize its mistake but due to member backlash.

Peloton to keep Apple GymKit integration on Bike+

“Earlier this week we shared that we were going to end our integration of Apple GymKit for Bike+,” Peloton wrote in an email to customers shared by Connect the Watts. “We heard you loud and clear, this is an important feature for you. Based on your feedback, we will continue supporting this integration.”

GymKit integration will be retained for owners of Peloton’s Bike+ that have an All-Access membership. So if you own a Bike+, you can continue tracking and synchronizing cycling workouts between your Apple Watch and Bike+.

“We also want to share that Peloton One-Tap Tracking will continue to be available on Bike+ as well as on all of our equipment, enabling seamless metric tracking across all fitness modalities, including those outside of cycling,” reads the email message.

How to connect Apple Watch to gym equipment

To connect your Apple Watch to a compatible machine like Bike+, open the Workout app and hold the watch near the contactless reader on your Bike+. The display must face the reader and Detect Gym Equipment be turned on in Settings > Workout.

When the watch is paired, you’ll feel a light tap on your wrist. You can now press the Start/Stop button on the gym equipment to begin/end your workout.

GymKit will automatically sync workout data such as calories, distance, speed, floors climbed, incline and pace between the watch and the connected fitness machine.
