Peloton removes support for Apple GymKit in favor of its own tracking system

Peloton has removed integration with Apple’s GymKit feature in favor of its own fitness tracking system, dubbed Peloton One-Tap.

The company shared the news in a February 14 email, saying it’ll start transitioning Apple Watch users from GymKit to Peloton One-Tap tracking on February 27.

A support document on the Peloton website confirms that “the latest Peloton product software updates use One-Tap Apple Watch tracking” instead of GymKit. Peloton owners who installed the latest software updates on their machines shouldn’t notice any functional changes.

Peloton removes Apple GymKit support

Apple Watch owners should not be concerned because both GymKit and Peloton’s One-Tap app write data to Apple’s Health app.

As a result, Peloton owners can still track distance and pace and see their heart rate metrics live on Peloton screens, the only difference being that this workout data now comes via  Peloton’s app instead of Apple’s proprietary fitness equipment API.

Peloton rolled out GymKit support in 2022.

What about Bike+ owners?

The only people who might complain are those who bought Peloton’s stationary $2,495 workout bike because GymKit integration was advertised as one of the exclusive perks of Bike+.

GymKit is Apple’s software framework that enables manufacturers to integrate their gym equipment with Apple Watch. Introduced as part of 2017’s watchOS 4.1 update, the GymKit platform brings calorie and heart-rate tracking via Apple Watch to compatible treadmills, ellipticals, indoor bikes and other gym equipment.
