You’ll perform a facial scan with the Apple Store app to determine your Vision Pro size

The Apple Store app will let you scan your face with an iPhone or iPad’s TrueDepth camera to determine correct sizes for Vision Pro’s light seal and headband.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset ships with several components that must be sized correctly to ensure proper fit. You’ll use the Apple Store app to scan your face with Face ID to determine the right sizes for the included light seal and headband.

A facial scan performed by the TrueDepth camera includes depth data, which allows Apple’s machine learning algorithm to create a model of your head in 3D.

The Apple Store App will let you determine your Vision Pro size

A facial scan will enable the Apple Store app to recommend appropriate sizes for the light seal and headband to ensure a tailored fit. During the Vision Pro’s preview phase, the company provided developers testing the headset with a custom app called Head Measure and Fit to determine their correct sizes.

The purpose of the light seal is to block stray light from entering your field of view. A snug fit between the user’s face and the light seal is crucial for the Vision Pro magic.

Another facial scan is required to set up the Persona feature, but that step is part of visionOS setup and only requires the headset’s built-in TrueDepth camera.

As MacRumors reported, code references found by its contributor Aaron Perris suggest the Apple Store app has already gained this functionality, meaning Head Measure and Fit app won’t be required when the device goes on sale.

You’ll need the Apple Store app version 5.2 or later

Apple itself informed those who signed up for Vision Pro email updates that a facial scan in the Apple Store app will be required when placing an order.

“For the face scan, you’ll need the latest version of the Apple Store app, which became available on January 11.”. The update has a version number of 5.22.

Pre-orders for the Vision Pro headset start on Friday, January 19, at 5am PT. Retail availability starts on February 2. The device will initially launch in Apple’s retail stores in the United States, with additional countries following later this year.
