Apple releases AirPods Pro 2 firmware update 6B34

Apple just this week released an updated firmware for both models of the AirPods Pro 2, including the ones with the Lightning-based charging case, and the ones with the USB-C-based charging case.

The latest AirPods Pro 2 firmware has been designated with the build number 6B34 and is the first update to be released for any of Apple’s AirPods hardware since software update 6B32 back in November.

According to the release notes on Apple’s own “About firmware updates for AirPods” website, the company claims that the update brings with it “Bug fixes and other improvements.”

Apple is generally vague when it comes to AirPods-centric firmware updates, so it isn’t surprising to see Apple simply saying that the 6B34 update includes bug fixes without listing what those bugs may have been, as has been the case for the past four AirPods-oriented firmware updates to date.

If you’re interested in checking to see what version of firmware your AirPods Pro 2 are running, then you can simply navigate to Settings → Bluetooth and tap on the information (i) button next to your AirPods Pro 2. The firmware your device is running will then be displayed, as shown below:

Apple doesn’t offer an on-demand way to update AirPods hardware firmware like they do with other devices. Instead, the updating process happens automatically under ideal circumstances, which are described as when all the following are satisfied:

  • AirPods Pro 2 are charging
  • AirPods Pro 2 are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  • Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is in range of a connected Wi-Fi network

Please note that you can also have your AirPods Pro 2 firmware updated manually at any Apple Store, but this is a rather inconvenient trip for such a minor software update. Android users, however, may have no choice but to use this method as they don’t have an Apple device to jump-start the firmware update process.
