Apple could bring OLED panels to the iPad Air and iPad mini in 2026

Assuming customers react positively to the first OLED iPad Pro tablets in 2024, Apple could launch OLED-based iPad Air and iPad mini in 2026.

The iPad Air was Apple’s most popular tablet that still sells well, as does the iPad mini, which has remained in the lineup after receiving a design makeover in 2021.

Apple will first bring OLED technology to the iPad Pro line in 2024, according to existing rumors. In 2026, the technology will start trickling down to the iPad Air and iPad mini, according to a report from technology research firm Omdia.

OLED iPad Air and iPad mini could drop in 2026

Omdia acknowledges the transition to OLED will begin with the iPad Pro lineup in 2024. Apple will then evaluate customers’ reactions to OLED-based iPad Pros before committing to purchase OLED panels for the iPad Air and iPad mini.

Adopting OLED across iPads is a project several years in the making. Some vendors like Samsung have been selling OLED tablets for years, but Apple’s strict requirements have proved more challenging to OLED makers than anticipated.

Because OLED panels are also costlier than LCDs, Apple might branch out the iPad Pro family in 2024 into two lines: LCD-based models offered at current prices and those with OLED screens sold at higher prices.

OLED vs. mini-LED

OLED technology is expected to replace mini-LED on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Mini-LED provides an OLED-like experience but suffers from the blooming effect and is considered a temporary solution until OLED-based iPads arrive.

OLED technology allows for higher resolutions, higher refresh rates, lower power consumption, no backlights, crisp colors, deep blacks and high contrast.
