Withings launches Body Scan, an impressive smart scale that also measures body fat, vascular health, & more

Withings, a company known for their high-end Apple Health-compatible accessories for keeping track of your body’s health and well-being on Tuesday launched a new product called the Body Scan.

Withings Body Scan.

At first glance, it looks like a high-tech scale, but as you might have inferred already from the name, Body Scan is a full-body health and wellness scanner to that helps you better understand your weight, body composition, and cardiovascular health, among other things.

I’ve personally been using Withings accessories for around a year, including their blood pressure cuff, which I think is incredibly convenient and portable. Their accessories are top-notch and integrate right into your iPhone’s Health app experience to give you a bigger picture of how you’re doing before a doctor’s visit.

Body Scan is unique in that it can not only measure your weight like an ordinary scale, with its built-in 6-lead ECG technology, vascular age, and electrodermal activity assessment, you can check on things like your heart health and body fat composition.

Through the use of multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), Body Scan is able to tell you where in your body your fat is being stored. The app will help you visualize where you need to focus exercise efforts by providing a 3D map of your body fat composition. Then, it can help you track your fat gain or fat loss. This all works via Body Scan’s built-in retractable handle.

Body Scan’s vascular age feature also helps you learn more about your cardiovascular health and risks. This feature tracks heart and blood vessel function. In addition to its 6-lead ECG feature, Body Scan also measures the speed at which heart-generated waves move along the arteries. You will want to aim for a lower vascular age, as a higher vascular age suggests that your heart performs less efficiently.

Body Scan can also assess your sweat activity. Embedded electrodermal sensors can detect and record sweat gland activity to help you better understand if your sweat glands are working how they should. With your score, you’re able to determine if you need to make lifestyle changes to improve your health.

Body Scan features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a high-resolution color display, and the ability to record data for up to eight separate users — perfect for families. With built-in modes for babies, athletes, and expecting mothers, it’s a great tool that could change lives for the better by alerting people early to potential health issues so that they can seek medical help.

Got a family member with an Android phone because they’re too stubborn to switch to an iPhone? No problem. Body Scan works with Android devices too.

If you’re interested in checking out the Body Scan from Withings, then you can pick one up from the company’s websitefor $399.95. While you’re there, you may want to check out some of their other offerings, as I highly recommend their blood pressure cuff.
