Two more jailbreak tweaks that breathe new life into Apollo for Reddit released

The popular Apollo Reddit client closed down for good on Friday because of Reddit’s disgusting API changes, leaving a bitter taste for those who’ve been reluctantly forced to switch to Reddit’s less-than-stellar first-party app for iPhones and iPads.

Apollo for Reddit.

But as we showed you on Friday, the jailbreak community found a way to keep Apollo alive — at least on jailbroken devices — by letting users utilize their API key in the app with a jailbreak tweak called ApolloAPI by iOS developer Ryan Nair.

Fortunately, the outcry of support has been overwhelming, and even more developers have stepped up to the plate with alternative jailbreak tweaks that will keep the Apollo app functioning.

The latest two releases come in the forms of ApolloPatcher by iOS developer ichitaso and Artemis by iOS developer iCraze. Both tweaks work exactly the same way by allowing the end user to grab their API key from their Reddit account and then apply it to their Apollo app installation.

As an added bonus, these tweaks also support the ability to upload and delete images from Imgur, the preferred image hosting service for Reddit, which will be useful for those who want to use the Apollo app as they always have without any handicaps.

In the screenshot examples above, you can see what this looks like by way of the ApolloPatcher tweak. A blue button appears in the Apollo app that you can tap to paste in your API key acquired from Reddit via the following URL on the desktop website:

https://reddit.com/prefs/apps

Once there, you can tap on the “are you a developer? create an app…” button and fill in the fields like so:

  • Name: whatever you want
  • Choose Installed App
  • Description: whatever you want
  • About URL: whatever you want
  • Redirect URL: apollo://reddit-oauth

Once filled out, you would then click the create app button and then copy the API key generated by Reddit and then paste it into the prompt created by ApolloPatcher, shown above.

One important note here is that you must use the decrypted version of the Apollo app, and it must be version 1.15.11, as later versions won’t work.

It is also important that you decrypt the Apollo app yourself if you already own it, as downloading a decrypted version of the Apollo app from a third-party website or source would be considered piracy.

If you’re interested in trying either of the newest Apollo-salvaging tweaks for jailbroken devices, then you can head over to their respective repositories to give them a try:
