ApolloAPI jailbreak tweak utilizes your own API credentials so you can continue using Apollo for Reddit

Today was the final day that Reddit users were able to take advantage of Apollo, which I consider to be the best client for the Reddit platform ever made. Unfortunately, Reddit is out there making decisions that hurt third-party app developers to enhance its revenue stream, even despite a very public outcry from users demanding the opposite.

While most Apollo users will delete the app following its shutdown, those with jailbreaks just might be able to keep it up and running for a while longer. iOS developer Ryan Nair released a rather timely new and free jailbreak tweak called ApolloAPI that lets users set their own API key for the Apollo app such that they can continue using it.

As you might be able to tell from the screenshot example above, making use of this method requires the following steps by the end user:

  1. Sign into your Reddit account on a desktop and go to the reddit.com/prefs/apps link
  2. Click on the ‘Are you a developer? Create an app…’ button
  3. Fill in the fields (Name, Choose, Description, About URL, and Redirect URL)
  4. Click on the ‘Create App’ button
  5. After creating the app, you get a client identifier (random characters)
  6. Enter your key in the space above in the app screenshot

The developer warns that Apollo will continue to use the original API credentials for things like Imgur, but it’s hoped that a future update will support replacing those as well.

For what it’s worth, Reddit has previously said that using your own API keys to keep Apollo running on your device will not be allowed, so it will be interesting to see how Reddit attempts to thwart efforts to keep Apollo up and running using this method. Ordinarily, it’s used by developers who wish to create their own apps, only this time, you’re using them with someone else’s app.

The ApolloAPI jailbreak tweak is intended to work with jailbroken iOS & iPadOS 15 and 16 devices only at this time, and is available for free fro the Havoc repository for anyone who wants to give it a whirl. It’s also worth noting that ApolloAPI is open source on the developer’s GitHub page.
